It’s time for the LaCie d2 external hard drive to be re-released, this time with a boost that should, by all means, make it into a brand new device altogether. What we’re looking at here is what’s now called the LaCie d2 USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series and it’s ready for universal connectivity like no other. This machine works with the fabulous speeds of USB 3.0 for a large cross-section of brand new machines and hits speeds to the max with no less than Thunderbolt connectivity for speeds up to two times that of FireWire 800.

This machine now works with speeds up to 180MB/s and has the ability to transfer a 10GB project in less than a minute. This comes with a fan-free aluminum heat sink design with a sleek silvery aesthetic and a lovely blue eye. This industrial design creates 60 percent more surface area than flat designs, this allowing heat to efficiently divert and dissipate like a champ. You’ll be able to stack these drives up if you wish, or just keep one to the side of your computer upright on its own simple stand.

You’ve got 256-bit AES encryption for security and the knowledge that you’re working with a company that’s been in business making drives like these for almost a decade. With USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces you’ll be able to work with new Apple products such as the MacBook Pro and Ultrabooks of many kinds. You’ve got backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 as well and you get both a USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt cable in the box.

The LaCie d2 was designed by Neil Poulton and remains as iconic as it was the day it was originally revealed. This new edition will be available with a full backup software suite in two sizes, one of them with 3TB of space, the other with 4TB. Porsche Design may not be directly involved in building German supercars, but there are certain expectations to be met, aren’t there? LaCie is rolling out a new version of its Porsche Design hard drive skewed towards Mac owners that should offer more of the performance you’d associate with the automotive brand. The P’9223 Slim SSD is a third thinner than its ancestor but carries the option of a 120GB SSD that makes the most of the USB 3.0 port. If all runs well, nearly any Mac launched in 2012 can shuttle data along at a brisk 400MB per second. Demanding Mac fans will need to pay $150 for the flash-based edition to have the P’9223 feel truly Porsche-like; others only have to spend $100 if they’re content with the Volkswagen pace of a 500GB spinning drive.

One of the features for mobile workers that Windows 8 will support is the ability to boot and operate Windows 8 from a portable device such as an external USB drive. Kingston has announced a new flash drive that is certified for Windows To Go with the Windows 8 Enterprise operating system. The drive specifically designed to help IT administrators support the mobile users.

The drive is called the Kingston DataTraveler Workspace USB Flash Drive. The device is an external USB 3.0 Flash Drive promising SSD-like performance. The drive is certified by Microsoft for Windows To Go allowing the deployment of a bootable corporate workspace.

The drive is not designed for data storage and is intended to allow users to operate from multiple PCs with a secure environment. The drive supports BitLocker for data encryption and Trusted Boot to protect the boot process and the drive has anti-malware software. The device is also resistant to accidental removal allowing the worker to plug the drive back and continue working with no downtime as long as the flash drive is plugged back in within 60 seconds.

The flash drive is compatible with machines operating Windows 7 or Windows 8. The drive is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports, though undoubtedly, you’ll lose performance. The Workspace drive is available with 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB of storage and maximum sequential read/write speeds are 250 MB/s.
