Xi3 has been one of the more inventive PC builders in the field, designing its Modular Computers in the belief that small, more upgradable desktops are the way of the future. The company is planning two new systems to further that dream, the X3A and X7A, but it wants our help: it’s running a Kickstarter funding drive until October 28th to assist the development and garner some early adopters. Put down $503 or $603 and you’ll get the entry-level X3A, a dual-core 1.65GHz (likely AMD E-450-based) PC with 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and either Linux or Windows installed; splurge with $1,103 or more and you’ll get the more performance-driven X7A, which jumps to a quad-core chip with a 3.2GHz peak speed, a Windows-loaded 64GB SSD and faster graphics. Assuming Xi3 makes its target, we should see the X3A and X7A arrive in January and February respectively, with Kickstarter supporters beating the larger herd by a week. Even existing owners are accounted for through a Primary I/O Board upgrade, due before the end of this year, that carries more Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. Crowdfunding is an unusual approach to buying that next PC, without the certainties of shopping at an online store — but we’re also dealing with an unusual PC from the get-go.

ADATA’s got an 8.9mm thick portable USB 3.0 drive, limbos under the competition by a millimeter
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhen it comes to your device being the “world’s thinnest” or not can be decided by a single millimeter. Just days after Toshiba unveiled its 9mm-thick 500GB external hard drive, ADATA has knocked a little more off its own enclosure and declared victory. It’s releasing the DashDrive Elite HE720, a stainless steel USB 3.0 drive that measures in at 8.9mm-thick, and size is not the only department where it’s making an end-run around ol’ Tosh — it’s also $25 dollars cheaper, costing $90. In more mundane news, users who pick up the unit are entitled to snag a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security and it’ll be available shortly.

Japanese manufacturer Scythe has proudly introduced its new portable USB 3.0 CF-Reader. The device is compatible with CompactFlash cards of Type I and Type II as well as UDMA. As its name suggests, the Scythe portable USB 3.0 CF-Reader uses the fast USB 3.0 interface, providing data transfer rates of over 100 MB per second. It supports both Windows and Mac OS operating systems. The Scythe CF-Reader is currently available for 16,70 EUR ($20). [Product Page]
Sure, Thunderbolt is fast, but there aren’t many devices that you can buy that work with it, leaving Apple fanboys crying in their closets. LaCie has released a new Thunderbolt-compatible portable drive, that uses a speedy solid-state drive for that extra special cherry on top. It also supports USB 3.0 for PC users.
The LaCie Rugged drive comes in three versions. The 120 GB SSD sells for $199(USD), the 256 GB SSD sells for $349 and there’s a 1 TB 5400 RPM drive for $249. The prices aren’t that bad, especially for SSDs. LaCie claims a top speed of 380 MB/s for the SSDs, which seems a bit dubious. Currently, the fastest USB 3.0 external SSD transfers at 195 MB/s. If the claims are accurate, then this will be a blindingly fast external drive.
The drive is MIL-compliant to handle shock and drops from up to about 4 feet, so it should be fine if you drop it off your desk or out of your backpack. Though a SSD might hold up to much more severe drops. Just don’t try dropping the hard disk based model out of an airplane any time soon.

ADATA has unveiled a new external portable hard drive that it claims to be the world’s thinnest. The drive is only 8.9 mm thick and connects to computers using USB 3.0. That means not only is the drive thin, but it should have impressively fast data transfer as well. The drive is called the DashDrive Elite HE720.
The external hard drive is stuffed inside a stainless steel case is highly scratch resistant to prevent damage and marring with long-term use. The portable hard drive also has a one touch backup button that makes backing up your digital content very easy. The drive has a blue LED indicator that glows when data is being transferred.
The external storage drive has a capacity of 500 GB, which is enough for roughly 100 DVD movies and a huge quantity of digital photographs. While the external hard drive supports USB 3.0 connectivity, it will also work with USB 2.0 ports making it backwards compatible. The little drive measures 117 x 79 x 8.9 mm and weighs 164 g.
The external storage device is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux machines. ADATA ships the drive with a USB 3.0 cable, making it ready to go right out-of-the-box. The drive is available online right now for $89.99.

LaCie’s Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt: fast portable storage that can take a beating
Posted in: Today's ChiliLaCie’s no stranger to kicking out portable HDDs that are a-okay with getting kicked around, and the Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series is no exception. As the extended title implies, this one is equipped to transfer files via USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt, and it’ll play nice with Mac and Windows platforms. The LaCie Rugged SSD offers up transfer rates as high as 380MB/sec — a feat we came darn close to hitting ourselves in testing — and the HDD variants claim up to 110MB/sec. The bantam drive is entirely bus-powered, and it’s engineered to shake off drops of up to four feet. Interesting? Both models should be shipping shortly, with the 1TB HDD edition going for $249.99 and the 120GB SSDer for $199.99.
