Without PC Lets You Access Data on Your USB Drives – Without a PC

So you need to transfer files from your portable hard drive to a USB drive, but you don’t have access to a PC or laptop. It’s a huge emergency and you need to get it done, pronto. Unfortunately, there’s not an easy way to do it but with a computer – or is there?

Without PC

Designer Dongwook Kim is aware of the inconvenience of needing a computer to access and transfer files between drives, which is why he came up with Without PC. It’s a neat little gadget that lets you access and transfer files between the two drives without, as the name indicates, needing a PC to do so. It’s compact and features a cool, curved touchscreen interface so you can get the job done, pronto.

Without PC1

Without PC is a concept design entry to the 2013 iF design award, but there is no word on a production version at this point. With that custom curved touchscreen we might be waiting a while.

Personalized USB Flash Drives: Whose Drive Is It Anyway?

USB drives come in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, not all of them can be labeled. Whether you want to put on a name label or indicate what type of files are inside, you often won’t be able to do so because the drives are usually too small to fit a label on.

One option would be these fun-looking and uber-colorful drives.

They’re from FormURLife, where you can buy these unique and personalized USB drives that’ll let you easily distinguish which USB drive is yours, since you can have it spell out your name. They also help in organizing your drives based on their contents.

Custom USB Drives1
Whatever you want your USB drive to spell out, they can make it happen. The only limitation is that you can choose only up to 10 characters – but that shouldn’t be too hard. They also state that some of the designs may be fragile, so you’ll need to be careful not to toss around your drive too much.

You can also go with the Shift USB drive, which offers the option to have your name spin or slide inside of the drive – though it’s limited to 8 characters.

The drives are available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities. They’re priced at $36, $42, and $50 (USD), respectively.

GIGS.2.GO: Portable Tear and Share USB Flash Drives

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you desperately needed a flash drive but couldn’t find one to save your life? It’s times like these where something like the GIGS.2.GO would’ve been useful.

The question is, what’s GIGS.2.GO? It’s about the size of a credit card and it’s basically just four USB drives arranged into one neat little package.

GIGS.2.GO

The premise that Kurt Rampton and the BOLTgroup were working with when they designed GIGS.2.GO was to provide people with emergency thumb drives that they can just keep in their wallet.

Thanks to the “Tear and Share” technology, the card of drives will come in especially handy for people who work with large teams. Just tear off a drive, save your data, and pass it along to whoever needs it.

GIGS.2.GO1

GIGS.2.GO is designed to be produced from 100% post-consumer molded paper pulp, so they can be labeled easily with a pen or marker.

There’s no word on if or when you’ll be able to buy one though.

Mimoco expands MIMOBOT Legends line with Washington and Lincoln flash drives

Mimoco‘s Legends of MIMOBOT Series has a wide range of characters in it, such as the Star Trek X line that was released back in November, and the Bruce Lee drive before that in August. Now the company has released its latest characters, these ones in honor of President’s Day – George Washington and Abraham Lincoln USB flash drives.

Legends_US_Presidents_MIMOBOT

The Legends of MIMOBOT line of drives is meant to commemorate the legends among us, whether they’re cultural icons, certified geniuses, or your friendly neighborhood superhero. In line with the series are the U.S. Presidential flash drives, one featuring the likeness of Abraham Lincoln, and the other of George Washington, both decked out with their most distinguishing characteristics, such as Washington’s suit and Lincoln’s bow tie.

Both drives are being released only in limited editions, and as with other drives in the series, they come loaded with content pertaining to which ever character you choose. Buying the George Washington drive, for example, will get you Washington-themed avatars, wallpapers, and icons, while the same applies with the Lincoln drive. The Washington MIMOBOT is hand-numbered and only 1,000 are being produced.

Both drives can be had in 8GB, 16GB, and 128GB varieties, priced $19.99, $29.99, and $129.99, respectively. Both drives are USB 2.0, and are compatible with Windows and OS X. The drives feature a one-year limited warranty, and measure in at a fairly large 2.5-inches high by 1-inch wide. You can grab your own now directly from Mimoco.

Kingston HyperX Predator 1TB Flash Drive: You Don’t Want to Lose This One

Kingston just unveiled a technological marvel at CES 2013: a 1TB USB 3.0 flash drive. A terabyte on a stick. If you can make something as insane as that, then you deserve to name it whatever the hell you like, which is what exactly Kingston did. Behold: the 1TB Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator. I say the name doesn’t do it justice.

According to Kingston the flash drive can achieve 240MB/s read and 160MB/s write speeds on a USB 3.0 connection. Maximum PC got a look at the massive pocket drive on Kingston’s CES booth; skip to around 0:25 to see it.

Some of you may remember that Victorinox showed off a 1TB thumb drive as part of a Swiss army knife almost a year ago, but I don’t think it ever went on sale. As the Kingston rep said in the video, their 1TB flash drive should be out in a couple of months. You probably won’t be buying one though. Pocket-lint says it will cost a ridiculous $3,400 (USD). But I can believe that price tag, because the DataTraveler HyperX Predator that “only” has 512GB is already available and it lists at $1,750.

Kingston 1TB USB 3.0 Thumb Drive Hands-on

Earlier this week we mentioned the folks from Kingston unveiled the worlds first USB 3.0 thumb or flash drive to also have a full 1000GB of storage. We’ve certainly seen 1TB flash drives before, but none support USB 3.0 at the moment. Today here at CES we managed to quickly get some hands-on pictures with the new flash drive so check it out.

IMG_3562

1TB of storage just slightly bigger than the size of a thumb rocking USB 3.0 speeds. That’s just crazy. I want one already. Sadly as I’m sure many of you know, the price tag is pretty ridiculous. Now like mentioned above, we’ve seen 1000 GB flash drives before, so lets talk about the speed in this crazy fast thumb drive.

Kingston has added this to their HyperX Predator series for the simple fact that it’s blazing fast and they didn’t compromise on speed when building this device. Kingston’s Predator doesn’t skimp on speed, at all. Promising read/write speeds of up to 240MB/s and 160MB/s, respectively. Nice right?

It might not be as fast as many SSD’s available today, but then again this this is relatively small and fits in your shirt or pants pocket. Then as usual Kingston’s popular wireless storage WiDrive was updated and their new model features removable storage — instead of the integrated versions available today. Add this 1TB thumb drive to that and you’ll have your own 1TB of sweet sweet storage. Almost your own personal cloud as the storage is all accessible over WiFi. The 1TB HyperX Predator will be available later in Q1, and while the price hasn’t been disclosed yet, the 512GB version is available for a staggering $1,750. Tough pill to swallow right there. Expect a rather steep price when they reveal all the details later this month. Start saving those nickels.

Dark Knight Rises flash drive is a bust of Batman

If you’re a hard-core superhero fan who liked the last Dark Knight movie, this flash drive will pique your interest. The flash drive is from a company called Infothink and the drive was released to go along with the launch of the Dark Knight Rises on Blu-ray. The drive is in the form of a bust showing Batman’s chest and head.

The bust is constructed of ABS/PVC plastic and is about 10 cm tall. You can pop Batman’s head off and plug it into the USB port on your computer. Apparently, both the head and the chest have USB ports that connect to your computer. The flash storage is in the head, and the chest is a USB hub.

The eyes in the head glow when they have power from USB and the Batman chest symbol glows when the bust body is plugged into a USB port. The head flash drive has 16 GB of storage inside. This drive is officially licensed by Warner Bros. and the drive is limited edition.

The limited quantity drives each have a unique serial number. That serial number isn’t printed on the drive anywhere and can only be read using a smartphone that has NFC technology. The drive is far from cheap at $86.99, but that price includes shipping.

Zana Design releases Apophis USB drive made from meteorite

In case you’ve got a cool two grand laying around and have always wanted a bit of meteorite in your computing arsenal, Zana Design has the solution. The Apophis USB drive is crafted from a variety of rare materials, including certified space rock. It’s available for purchase now for $1,990, with a cheaper silver model available at $1,130.

The drive is made from 200-year-old African wood, and, depending on which version you get, silver or 18-karat gold, as well as “high-purity diamond.” There are also bits of 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite. The Apophis has a storage capacity of 64GB, and a read speed of 190MB per second. The metal runs down the outer edge of the drive, as well as in a band around its circumference.

The Apophis gets its name from a 390-meter wide asteroid that came near the Earth in 2004. It is expected to hit Earth in 2036, a nice warm and fuzzy thing to remember every time you’re looking at your pen drive. Perhaps not surprisingly given the price, the unit comes with a lifetime warranty in the event you ever manage to break it, or it stops working.

Perhaps surprisingly, this isn’t the most expensive USB drive you can get – not by a long shot. That honor goes to the Shawish Magic Mushroom drive, which is priced at $36,900. These drives are joined by the likes of the Pandora ($999), the Dunhill Bulldog ($300), and the DOK ($2000).

LaCie’s New Waterproof USB Key Is Smaller Than Your House Key

The problem with little USB jump drives is that no matter how many you own, you’ve never got one when you need it. You could’ve have sworn you tossed one in your bag, but when it’s time to pass files around, it’s not there. That’s why we’re tempted to keep LaCie’s new PetiteKey dangling from our keychains. More »

Lacie’s New USB Drives Should Be The Key to Your Computer

Lacie’s been making storage solutions that look like keys for a while, but they’ve come out with their new models and they are more durable, smaller, and oh-so-desirable. The Lacie PetiteKey is waterproof, scratch-resistant, and covered in metal. It comes in three sizes, starting with an 8GB model for $15 going up to a 32GB model for $40. It comes with encryption software, but it probably works with other solutions, and I can’t think of a more fitting way to protect sensitive data than keeping it on your keychain with the way you protect your home.

They’re on sale now at Lacie’s website.
