USB Toaster Hub and Drives

I know that it is elections fever over here in the US, but if there was a vote opened up for the cutest and most adorable USB hub as well as USB flash drives in the market, chances are I would put my money on the USB Toaster Hub and Drives. You will be able to choose from four different USB flash drive designs of 4GB each – Butta, Crisp, Ry Ry and Tato at £12.99 a pop, while the USB Toaster Hub itself will retail for £17.99.

Heck, the USB Toaster Hub comes with an SD memory card slot to boot for expansion purposes, allowing you to transfer files about and to manage your data right on the spot. Nice to know that the individual USB ‘toasts’ come with their very own character and color, not forgetting to mention different facial expressions. It would be interesting to see how one is going to remember the kind of information stashed away on Tato, Butta, Ry Ry and Crisp. Too bad this is a USB 2.0 product, so it is not exactly future forward, but it will do for the majority of us out there.

PSY Flash Drive Stores Data to the Beat of Gangnam Style

PSY’s Gangnam Style has taken over the world. It’s currently the third most-viewed video ever on YouTube and it has spawned countless memes and video parodies to date. And wouldn’t you know? Fueling the craze even further is the fact that PSY now has a USB drive designed and fashioned to his image.

Gangnam Style USB2

I think it’s safe to say that his viral hit has just taken him on a whole, new level. How many other artists can say that some folks made a flash drive that looked like them after just one huge hit? I’d say only a handful of them could.

They can’t dance and they can’t sing, but they certainly capture the true look and essence of PSY. At least, in my opinion.

These flash drives are available from USBGeek in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities. The drives are priced from $17 to $35, depending on the capacity you get.

Decapitated Teddy Bear USB Drive Loses His Head for Your Data

This Teddy Bear USB Drive is as cute and adorable as flash drives can get. Heck, they’re so fluffy and doe-eyed that kids would mistake them for toys and grab them from your desk.

When they do, I suggest that you get the USB back though because aside from possibly containing your confidential data, it also has the potential to break their hearts and scar them forever.

I think the picture says it all. Dear Teddy, headless? Oh, the sheer horror of having to comfort the kid when he accidentally (or purposefully) pulls Teddy’s head off. That said, this flash drive is probably best for storing back-up files or other data that wouldn’t require you to bring it to an actual office. For obvious reasons.

Headless Teddy Bear USB Drive1

On a side note, it’s totally appropriate for Halloween. The Headless Teddy Bear USB Drive is priced from $22 to $38 (USD), depending on the storage capacity. 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB drives are available.

Stab Your PC with a Butterfly Knife USB Drive

USB ports will immediately surrender when you threaten them with Benchmade’s Bali-USB drive. Not only does it look like a balisong – aka butterfly knife – you can also flip and twirl it around, minus the risk of being stabbed.

The drive is modeled after Benchmade’s 62 Bali-Song knife. Aside from the blade being swapped out, the USB drive is also made of plastic instead of steel, probably to make it cheaper. Here’s a demo video by YouTuber WHbluelife:

BladeOps is selling the 4GB model of the Bali-USB flash drive for the wallet-slashing price of $30 (USD).

Kingmax intros UI05 USB flash drive with glass ceiling, lets you see memory storage 'in action'

If you ever thought the world of flash storage was, well, a little pedestrian, then you’ve clearly never met Kingmax. The memory-maker likes to spice things up with world firsts, and exhibits an enthusiasm for the utilitarian product that can only be admired. The latest innovation? A USB drive with a glass ceiling. The UI-05, as it is known, lets you peer directly at the chip that holds your data, while keeping it waterproof and dust-proof, all in 8, 16 and 32GB denominations. Even better for you, that enthusiasm is backed up by pure faith, with the metal-cased pen drive easing nerves with a (not world first) five-year warranty. What Kingmax didn’t let us see, however, was price and availability. There’s a close-up shot right after the break, or you can jump to the source for more info.

FXI Cotton Candy PC and Android-on-a-stick now shipping

We’ve heard about the FXI Cotton Candy a lot over the past year, but it still hasn’t made it into the hands of users and developers. First detailed last year, we then received some hands-on back in February with the Android powered USB stick. Today however, we’ve learned this PC and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on a thumb drive is shipping now for just $199.

The Cotton Candy has seen various delays, improvements, design changes and more. We’ve seen tons of lower quality and cheaper alternatives appear on the market in their absence, but they’re finally ready to start shipping. Originally it was set to hit the market in March, but later that turned into May for developers and now it looks like the public can get their hands on these little miniature devices.

The new and improved Cotton Candy is still the size of a pack of gum, only the design is seriously improved. You’ll get a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU, ARM Mali-400MP GPU, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and a micro-SD slot. On each side are the ports consisting of USB and HDMI-out for all types of use. Streaming movies, Android, Games and more to a display and hooking up wireless mice and more. The options are pretty limitless.

It currently runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and we might even see Jelly Bean, as well as other Linux-based operating systems. The device doesn’t support the Google Play Store either — so that’s a thing. FXI is alerting those two pre-ordered that devices are shipping now, and they’ll end the pre-order status for full store access starting October 1st. More details can be found at their website.

Victorinox nixes software updates for USB drives, security certificate to expire in September

Victorinox nixes software updates for USB drives, security certificate to expire in September

Victorinox may have offered a hefty bounty to crack its secure USB drives’ encryption, but the storage sticks seem to have met their match another way: the end of software support. In an email sent to customers and a pair of Facebook posts, the firm announced that it will halt updates as of next month and that its security program’s VeriSign certificate is only valid until September 15th. As a result, customers are urged to backup their data lickity split. According to the outfit, the economics of continuing application development just weren’t reasonable and it’ll now refer to a third party for all software. However, the Swiss Army Knife maker isn’t out of the flash drive business — it’s committed to putting more of the devices on the market. We’ve reached out to the company for more details on how the thumb drives will be affected and we’ll update when we get word. In the meantime, hit the source links for the notice or check out the e-mail below.

[Thanks, Scott]

LaCie RuggedKey packs encrypted data in toughened shell

LaCie has launched a new toughened memory stick, the LaCie RuggedKey, cladding a toughened flash chip in a resilient rubber bumper. The RuggedKey, which will be available in 16GB and 32GB capacities, connects via USB 3.0 and is capable of withstanding 100m drops, extremes of heat and cold, and IP-54 level dust and water. Perhaps best of all, it looks like a little neon grenade.

There’s also data security in electronic form rather than just hardware, with 256-bit AES encryption to stop access to anybody bar those who have the right password. It’s also paired with Wuala Secure Cloud Storage, which automatically mirrors a locked-down copy of any data added to the RuggedKey in a cloud drive accessible from your browser.

LaCie claims the RuggedKey’s USB 3.0 connection is capable of transferring a 5GB file (or an HD movie, or 3,000 photos) in under a minute, with peak speeds of up to 150MB/s. That will obviously depend on your computer, of course.

The LaCie RuggedKey is priced from £34.95 ($54) and will be available in 16GB and 32GB capacities. The drive has just dropped onto the SlashGear test bench, and so we’ll have a review for you very soon.

Jumpshot Promises to Solve Your PC Woes in a Flash

Buying a new PC or laptop can be exciting, but setting it up for use, and keeping it working smoothly can be quite a pain. There’s the primary concern of installing software to secure your machine and protect it against viruses and Trojans, but at the same time, the pre-loaded software that it came bundled with could end up becoming quite a hassle.

JumpshotThe solution? Jumpshot. It’s an all-in-one piece of software that provides fixes to specific problems you may encounter with your computer, and it does so with the introduction of a variety of lovable characters that target certain problems:

Jumpshot

Its developers are offering up Jumpshot pre-loaded into a series of adorably designed USB drives (with pop-out spring-loaded connectors when you press their bellies!) based on these very characters.

The project is currently up on Kickstarter, and while it will run for over one more month, it has already managed to raise over $65,000 in excess of its target goal.

A minimum pledge of $35(USD) will get you one specially-designed 8GB USB flash drive that will be pre-loaded with Jumpshot.
