Toshiba Canvio Connect portable hard drive launched

When it comes to portable hard drives, there are some notable names out there in the market such as Western Digital and of course, Toshiba. In fact, the Japanese consumer electronics giant has just announced that they will be rolling out the new Toshiba Canvio Connect portable hard drive which will be the first of its kind to let you access and share files straight from the device, with a maximum capacity of 2TB to boot. I know that there will be some who say that Western Digital, too, has had a 2TB portable hard drive out for ages, but can it do what the Toshiba Canvio Connect does?

In a nutshell, the Toshiba Canvio Connect would allow you to access, share and perform a digital back up of all your files regardless of where you are, and you can use a bevy of devices to boot such as a desktop, notebook, tablet or a smartphone. All of this is made possible thanks to its remote access and file sharing capabilities, where one is able to share one’s digital content with friends, family and colleagues from anywhere at any time directly from their Canvio Connect.

Despite its capability of carrying around 2TB of storage space, you would be pleased to know that the Toshiba Canvio Connect will still arrive in a new slim and compact form factor, where you can choose from a range of different colors, where among them include the all time classic black to the likes of silver, blue, red and white. BlackBerry users will have to sit this one out however, as the Toshiba Canvio Connect will feature its very own Toshiba Storage iOS or Android app that lets you perform a remote back up and access capability to the external hard drive.

Just make sure that your Toshiba Canvio Connect remains connected to an Internet-enabled computer which is running, and you can access your files, photos, music and movies anytime, anywhere, regardless of where you are. You are also able to share large files and folders instantly, and as an additional bonus, the Canvio Connect will come with 10GB of free cloud storage for storing “always available” copies of important files. Expect to pay $99, $109.99, $129.99, $169.99 and $189.99 for the 500GB, 750GB, 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB models, respectively.

There’s a lot of good and bad that comes with technology, most of it is good, and I love it. Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub

When it comes to mobile accessories, you know that you can rely on certain names to deliver some of the more interesting ones out there, and Satechi would definitely rank high on my list. After all, DIY stores tend to do very well these days as folks find it better to have a closer and more emotional attachment to one’s home, especially when it comes to modifying it on their own, and I guess the same can also be said for your notebook or desktop computer, where you might never know just when you need that particular accessory to help you out of a particularly tight spot. For instance, a USB hub would come in handy for modern Ultrabooks, as these tend to be extremely stingy in the number of USB ports available, normally limited to just 2, or 3, tops. The Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub does sound like a treat then, does it not?

Coming in a classic piano black color, the Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub has been described to be a useful, multipurpose Mac or PC accessory that enables users to connect a wide array of devices, where among them include (but are not limited to) digital cameras, printers, external hard drives, keyboards, flash drives, smartphones and tablets, all in a simple and easy solution. The Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub comes in a sleek and linear design, paving the way for easy cable management, as it takes up extremely little desk space, too.

Since it sports plug and play connectivity, the 10-Port USB Hub and its 9 USB 3.0 ports will play nice with the latest USB-based devices, while carrying a solitary 2.1 Amp charging port that is located on the right hand side of the hub, making it more than suitable to juice up power hungry but depleted iPads and other Android-powered tablets. The Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub is currently going for $49.99 a pop.

Datamancer rolls out Executive Keyboard

Are you in the market for a spanking new keyboard at the moment? Assuming you have answered in the affirmative, then you might be on the lookout for the usual suspects from Microsoft, Logitech, or even Genius. Well, how about taking a few steps off the well worn path, and settle for a totally different trail instead? Surely you have heard of Art Lebedev’s range of insanely priced computer peripherals, but fret not, we are not asking you to blow your year’s vacation budget on one of Art Lebedev’s tech installations. Thing is, you will still need to fork out a rather hefty amount for the Executive Keyboard from a certain Datamancer. The asking price for the Executive Keyboard? We are looking at $750, and that is without the custom add-ons and what not.

Why would a keyboard warrant such an insanely high price tag? Well, you have got to ask the good people over at Datamancer, who have put up their ware on Etsy. The Executive Keyboard will ship with an aluminum body that is always stunning to look at, even if it does not carry the “Apple” logo, while the presence of mechanical switches and typewriter keys will surely make every dollar of the $750 you put in well worth it.

The Executive Keyboard attempts to justify its price tag by being a hand-crafted keyboard, and the default layout remains a standard US ANSI 104-key QWERTY, although for folks who happen to live in Europe, you can always settle for an European layout. Needless to say, it would be the keys in the layout which function as the actual centerpiece of this computer peripheral, all done up in the style of antique typewriter keys. Since it connects to a computer via USB, expect the Executive Keyboard to play nice on any PC or Mac. There seems to be only nine for sale at the moment, so get them while they’re hot!

iTwin Connect now available

At long last, after waiting for quite some time, the iTwin Connect is now available, offering users protected as well as unrestricted access to the Internet, not to mention to home and corporate networks (virtual private network or VPN), too. Lux Anantharaman, CEO of iTwin, weighs in on the situation, saying, “With iTwin Connect users no longer have to worry about their online privacy when travelling, or worry about which online services are allowed in the places they travel to. Now frequent travelers, businesspeople and exchange students can browse privately and without restrictions from anywhere in the world.” Needless to say, what is the whole point of talking about the iTwin Connect when we do not espouse its strengths?

Some of the key benefits of the iTwin Connect will include the ‘Teleport Me’ function, allowing you to browse privately and securely from untrusted networks and access blocked or geo-restricted sites and services regardless of where you are in the world. All traffic will be directed via a private VPN tunnel to the home/office PC, where the public Internet may then be accessed via the home/office PC’s Internet connection. Not only that, ‘Teleport Me’ also delivers private access to the Internet courtesy of iTwin’s dedicated network servers in the United States, Europe or Asia/Pacific, should that be the case.

You will also be able to take advantage of personal, zero-configuration VPN for full bi-directional network access, while Military Grade Security lets you sleep in peace, thanks to hardware-grade security and two-factor authentication. Heck, why not check things out remotely with the ability for you to launch Windows Remote Desktop using a single click, gaining access to applications (and their data) on the home/office PC? Even better is, you will not be bogged down by those pesky monthly fees, as a one time cost will let you enjoy unlimited usage.

If you are interested, you can pick up the iTwin Connect now for $129 a pop.

Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 portable hard drive

Having a portable hard drive these days is nothing new, and if you were to carry one around with you, it would most probably come in a rather large capacity. Well, there are a fair number of companies out there that do churn out their share of portable hard drives, with Western Digital being one of them, but today we will concentrate on what Toshiba has in store. The Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 range has just been expanded, where the highest end model is now capable of toting around up to 2TB of your favorite digital memories as well as any other files. Apart from that, Toshiba also has something a little bit extra special for the masses, which is a 2TB Canvio Special Edition portable hard drive.

It is said that the new 2TB solution will enable Toshiba’s customers who want basic functionality without having to sacrifice on storage capacity, and it must be said that majority of the basic users are “hard at work” whether they realize it or not, in growing an expansive digital library.

The most basic storage solution from Toshiba is the aptly named Canvio Basics 3.0, where as mentioned earlier, it now comes in a 2TB capacity. Just in case you need to get a rough idea on how much data does 2TB equal to, we are looking at roughly 571,000 digital photos, 526,000 digital music files or 1,640 downloaded digital movies. Best of all is, you need not have to go through the hassle of performing a software installation as the Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 follows the usual plug-and-play maneuver.

As its name suggests, the Canvio Basics 3.0 will offer support for USB 3.0 to deliver rapid transfer speeds, and will also play nice with USB 2.0 devices, where it will come equipped with a special internal shock sensor and ramp loading technology so that you can shrug off accidental drops.

As for the Canvio Special Edition Portable Hard Drive, it offers spacious storage capacity and a complete, indeed simple-to-use backup solution. Sporting NTI Backup Now EZ software that makes backing up systems a cinch, users can now choose to store their digital files to the cloud, or back up their files and folders to their Canvio portable hard drive.

The 2TB Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 portable hard drive will retail for $189.99 a pop, while the 2TB Toshiba Canvio Special Edition portable hard drive is a wee bit more expensive at $219.99.

Super WiFi Antenna helps extend your WiFi reach

When you add the prefix “Super” to anything, and rest assured, expectations on the performance of that particular noun would be sent to sky high proportions. So when we came across the $119.95 Super WiFi Antenna, there was this naughty bit in me that wanted to tear into all that the Super WiFi Antenna promised but could not deliver, but just to give the benefit of the doubt to First Street Online, let us see what this device touts.

For starters, it claims to be so powerful and amped up, that it is capable of picking up available WiFi signals from up to a mile away, how about that? All you need to do is plug it into an available USB port on your notebook or computer, and you’re good to go. For it to be weather and UV resistant would mean the Super WiFi Antenna is rather hardy, and I strongly suspect that the notebook it is plugged into will not be that adventurous to remain exposed to the sun for long hours on end, let alone the user unless he/she is in need of a tan. Of course, this is great only if you have a free WiFi network to connect to, but otherwise, it could be put to good use when you want to work from your yard under the sun.
