Before you dive in, however, we’ve introduced a few changes to the buyer’s guide, so take a minute to prepare yourself for what’s in store. First and foremost, you’ll now find alternate selections to supplement our top picks. This should already be familiar to many of you, which is the same format we use for our seasonal gift guides. The next one is a biggie: we’ve dropped the QWERTY selection. By and large, manufacturers and carriers alike have shifted their focus away from keyboard-equipped smartphones, and you’ll rarely find more than one option on any given carrier. That said, if you still insist on the tactile experience, you’ll always find everything you need to know in our reviews. Finally, whenever possible, you’ll now find prices from Amazon Wireless, which allows us to provide you with more compelling budget selections and highlight the substantial savings that you can score by circumventing the carriers. It’s not like they need your charity, anyway.

Outside of Sprint’s Galaxy S III variant, no other carrier-branded models have been made to officially support Google Wallet. That’s all set to change today with a maintenance update rolling out to owners of the US Cellular unit. Details of this maintenance release, uncovered by Android Police, outline a host of incoming bug fixes bundled in with Amazon’s app suite and Mountain View’s aforementioned mobile payment app. The leaked screenshot also indicates that other NFC-equipped devices on the operator’s lineup could be joining the fray soon, though nothing’s specified. You can go ahead and try to pull the OTA now, but for those of you with ants in your pants, a manual solution is available at the Samsung source link below.

Most Windows Phone enthusiasts have their sights set on large trophy-like targets, but if you have more modest goals in mind, then US Cellular’s latest acquisition might be just what the doctor ordered. If the device pictured above looks familiar, that’s because it should. Rebranded as the Render, most of you know this handset as the ZTE Orbit, an entry-level device that features a 4-inch 800 x 480 display, a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel camera and Windows Phone 7.5 Tango. So, if US Cellular is your wireless carrier of choice and you’re seriously crushing on Windows Phone, the ZTE Render will run you $80 after a $100 mail-in rebate.

We already knew that US Cellular would be getting its hands on the Galaxy Note II alongside the four national players in the US, but the company just came out with specific pricing and general availability. The device will go for $300 (after $100 mail-in rebate and two-year commitment) and should be available in late October, though the carrier will open up its site for pre-orders starting today. If you’re considering just waiting it out until they’re in stores, pre-ordering the Note II comes with a perk: you won’t have to bother with the mail-in rebate. USCC only appears to be offering the 16GB titanium gray option, but we’ll still certainly take that over nothing at all. Check out the press release below.

Update: We just heard back from US Cellular that the full retail cost of the Note II will be $800.

After having previously leaked, the LG Splendor is now officially available at US Cellular. A retooled version of the Optimus L7, it combines Android 4.0 with a single-core 1GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch WVGA display and a 5-megapixel camera that’ll capture video at 720p. The phone also sports a front-facing VGA camera, 2GB of internal storage, a 4GB microSD card and a 1,700mAh battery. Unfortunately, its heritage means purchasers must deal with sluggish performance and forego basic amenities such as an ambient light sensor. Given its $80 price tag — after a $100 mail-in rebate, mind you — it’s positioned as a poor alternative to the Galaxy S II, which is also available for $80 from US Cellular. Don’t say we never warned you.
