Every day, millions of people enjoy the simple luxury of a blue and grey-clad letter carrier showing up at their house and dropping the day’s mail on their doorstep. But if some Republican lawmakers get their way, this luxury may be short-lived.
The Amerithrax case of 2001, in which letters harboring Anthrax spores were delivered to media outlets and a pair of US Senators’ offices, killed five people and sickened another 17. In the wake of these attacks, the US Postal Service (USPS) installed a system of electronic noses in mail processing facilities around the country designed to sniff out the deadly bacteria before someone else does. Back in February, the U.S. Postal Service announced its plans to end Saturday mail delivery for regular mail, such as letters, although the organization would still continue delivering packages. It looks as though USPS is retracting their plans to stop Saturday mail service according to a recently published memo.
In the memo, USPS pointed blame squarely at Congress for passing a continuing budget resolution that would prohibit a new mail delivery schedule. Congress wrote in the budget resolution they would continue funding of the USPS as long as it was able to maiming the same level of service it did since 1983. (more…)

After the USPS announced it will be ceasing the delivery of mail on Saturdays this summer. we were relived to hear that only meant letters and not packages. We have a feeling there are going to be a few unhappy USPS employees who may accidentally drop your box on their foot as they’re attempting to kick a soccer ball at the same time, which could result in some serious damage to your package. If there was only a way for people to know if their packages have been banged up before they sign for it. Oh wait – there is. (more…)

For years now, receiving mail in the U.S. on a Saturday has been a luxury many of us took for granted as other agencies, like UPS and FedEx, charge additional for a Saturday delivery of a package. But it looks as though that is about to change as USPS will be making a change to its Saturday service in the near future.
The U.S. Postal Service announced today it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays in order to save the agency $2 billion annually starting the week of August 5. This means regular mail deliveries will only occur Monday through Friday. (more…)
