Sony has unveiled its new 2013 Spring VAIO models. A featured new part of the line-up is an exciting model like nothing we’ve seen before – It is a hybrid PC / tablet. Literally, a PC that transforms from a PC to a tablet.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook announced

So Apple might have inadvertently kicked off the Ultrabook trend without knowing it by launching their MacBook Air which captured the imagination of millions for many years. Well, Intel responded with a list of hardware specifications that an Ultrabook needs to conform to, although there are some computer manufacturers who do skirt around that list with the bare minimum specifications, and they end up looking like regular notebooks instead of the now signature slim look found in majority of the Ultrabooks out there. Sony’s latest attempt will definitely not fall short of expectations, with the announcement of the Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook.

For starters, the Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook will merge innovative hardware designs with rich touch experiences that are powered by Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8 (which is still unreleased by the way). The highly versatile Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook is said to be able to transform just about instantly between a power-packed Ultrabook and a multi-media tablet with scratch-resistant glass. Hmmm, is it me, or are computer manufacturers starting to work on hybrid devices that offer flexibility in view of the work or play situation at hand?

The Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook will boast of a durable Surf Slider mechanism that will allow you to switch smoothly between keyboard and tablet, delivering a dual functioning computing experience. Tipping the scales at approximately 2.84 lbs. while boasting of an 11.6-inch display, the VAIO Duo 11 will also be accompanied by a pressure-sensitive digitizer stylus which delivers an expressive feel of natural handwriting directly on the touchscreen. You will be able to swap pen tips, depending on your current needs, for a firmer or softer writing feel. Sony claims that the digitizer stylus is ideal for writing, sketching and interacting with media and applications on the bright, detail-packed Full HD touchscreen.

Other hardware specifications include an LCD display and a backlit keyboard, the latest generation of Intel Core processors, full functional I/O port connectivity and Sony’s unique Sheet Battery technology. However, the color options are extremely limited – you will have to settle for black only, where prices start from $1,099.99 upwards depending on the hardware configuration.

Sony’s VAIO Duo 11 Windows 8 slider goes on sale this month, starts at $1,100

At least in the beginning, most of the made-for-Windows-8 devices you’re going to see will have a very similar form factor — namely, a tablet that slots into a detachable keyboard dock. Sony, though, is taking a different tack: the outfit is ignoring the hybrid trend altogether and will instead sell the VAIO Duo 11, one of a select few slider PCs to hit the market. Though we already got hands-on, we’re just now learning about pricing and availability: the company just announced that the Duo is coming out October 26th (the same day as Windows 8) and will start at $1,100.

That’s a lofty price, to be sure, but with a spec sheet that includes Ultrabook guts, a backlit keyboard, NFC, GPS and a 1080p, IPS, Gorilla Glass display, we don’t see how it could’ve cost much less. Take a gander at the design, and you’ll see it’s mostly made of magnesium alloy and, having handled it ourselves, we can attest to the sturdiness of the hinge mechanism. Compared to other sliders, which often make do with cramped keyboards, this offers a reasonably spacious layout, though it comes at the expense of a trackpad. Indeed, there’s no touchpad here; just an optical pointing stick. (Thankfully, it seems pretty precise.) Additionally, the Duo 11 supports pen input, and comes with a dual digitizer pen that can recognize 256 levels of pressure sensitivity. As a tablet-like device, it has not one, but two cameras, both capturing at 2.4-megapixel resolution.

Continuing our tour of the device, the 2.84-pound system is home to a surprisingly robust collection of ports, including HDMI-out, two USB 3.0 sockets, an Ethernet jack (!), memory card slot, headphone jack and VGA. Yes, VGA. This might be a good time to clarify that Sony envisions this as a machine for road warriors, though it comes not with Windows 8 Professional, but Home Premium. That would also explain the battery situation: in addition to the built-in 4,960mAh cell, it will be offered with an optional slice battery that promises to double the runtime. Bonus: the spare has its own AC port, so you can plug it directly into the outlet. Again, the Duo 11 starts at $1,100 with a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD (you can upgrade to a 256 drive and a Core i5 or 7 CPU if you wish). That’s all she wrote for now, but check out our hands-on for more photos and a quick video.

Sony Vaio Duo 11 arrives at the FCC

Whenever there is a particular piece of consumer electronics that is being prepared for its arrival to the US market, it will need to go through the hallowed halls of the FCC. One of the most recent candidates to do so would be the Sony Vaio Duo 11 which has been spotted. In fact, late last month, we saw leaked images of the Sony Vaio Duo 11 before it was officially revealed just a couple of days after the leak. This Windows 8-powered slider device is now safe in the hands of the FCC, where it is confirmed to carry 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, boast of NFC support, and has its signature stylus to boot.

No idea on whether 3G or 4G/LTE connectivity will be supported, but all things will be revealed in due time. Needless to say, since it has already arrived at the FCC, you can bet your bottom, hard-earned dollar that the device is being prepared to roll out to the masses very, very soon. The European model should arrive sometime in late October, so hopefully North America will follow suit – synchronized, even, s’il vous plait.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 slides its way past the FCC

Sony is clearly bent on getting the VAIO Duo 11 to market on time — just as we’re recovering from our post-IFA jet lag, the Windows 8 slider has popped up for approval at the FCC. The PC put through the wringer is very much like what we saw at the show, with 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and that signature stylus on offer. There’s no sign of 3G or 4G for the road warrior crowd. We don’t have any clues as to the exact US release timing from the FCC’s sign-off, but it does clear a path for an American release side by side with the European model in late October, if Sony yearns for some international synchronicity.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Windows 8 tablet/laptop hybrid revealed

As expected with upcoming Windows 8 devices, Sony did not disappoint as they officially took the wraps off the VAIO Duo 11, a hybrid sort of device which is part tablet and part laptop. As you can see in the photo above, the Duo 11 can slide forwards, covering the keyboard entirely and double as a tablet. Alternatively the screen can be pushed back which allows it to function as a regular laptop, albeit one that has a capacitive touchscreen for a display. (more…)

Sony unveils VAIO Duo 11 slideout tablet, Tap 20 portable touchscreen allinone

Sony just threw itself fully into the touchscreen Windows 8 arena — it’s introducing the VAIO Duo 11 slider tablet and the Tap 20 combination desktop and tablet design at its IFA 2012 press conference. The Duo 11 is a noticeably amped-up realization of the Hybrid concept we saw at CES. Its 11.6-inch, 1080p touchscreen is joined by a proper digitizer stylus for low-lag handwriting as well as some seriously powerful innards for a convertible PC its size: we’re talking an Ultrabook-level Core i3, i5 or i7 as well as a 128GB or 256GB SSD, NFC wireless, GPS, and HD-capable cameras at the front and back. Sony is hoping for a late October release for this beast of a slate, although we haven’t been given that all-important price.

The VAIO Tap 20, meanwhile, is more than just a tilting all-in-one desktop in the vein of Lenovo’s IdeaCentre A720. Despite carrying a 20-inch, 1,600 x 900 touchscreen, it’s still very much battery-powered — you can lug the 11.4-pound PC into the living room and treat it like a tiny multi-touch table, if that’s your inclination. It’s sharing the same processor picks as the Duo 11, but it turns to more conventional 750GB or 1TB hard drives and puts the emphasis on shareable apps like Family Paint and the Fingertapps Organizer calendar. Not surprisingly, there’s only one, front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera here, although NFC does make the cut. The Tap 20 is due to arrive at about the same time as its smaller Duo 11 sibling, although we’re once again without details of how much it will cost.

Sony’s Shape-Shifting, Windows 8-Powered VAIO Duo 11 Caught In Leaked Images

vaioduo11small

Microsoft’s Windows 8-powered surface tablet may be nabbing all the headlines (at least partially because some of Microsoft’s myriad hardware partners were miffed by the company’s decision to make it in the first place), but a newly-revealed convertible device from Sony seems like it may be able to give the Surface a run for its money.

PocketNow managed to score some images of the forthcoming Sony VAIO Duo 11, a Windows 8 tablet with an awfully familiar-looking gimmick — the (reportedly 11-inch) touchscreen slides up and latches into place, revealing a full-size, back-lit keyboard.

The eagle-eyed among you may note some distinct similarities between the VAIO Duo and the Eee Pad Slider that Asus released towards the end of last year. While I really dig the fact that the keyboard base actually seems to have some weight to it (imagine trying to use the Surface’s floppy physical keyboard on your lap), there is of course one major downside: it’s going to be a hefty little convertible. It’s a natural side-effect of including a physical keyboard that’s worth using, but the end result may well be a device that’s more cumbersome than the competition when used in tablet mode.

You can bet that Sony’s going to try and downplay that size issue, and in fact they already are. In some photos it almost looks like the Duo is lying flush on that table, but the side view (above) reveals a much different story — the device’s bottom actually curves up to meet the keyboard. To round out the package, there’s a capacitive stylus featured prominently in the images, but there’s no word on whether it’ll come with the Duo or if it will be sold separately. Sadly, there’s little in the way of juicy details right now — the spec sheet, release date, and Sony’s pricing plans are all still shrouded in mystery, but IFA is just around the corner and it wouldn’t be a shock if one of these things appeared on the show floor.
