NASA’s 6-foot-tall Valkyrie 1 Robot: Not Quite Human

The DARPA Robotics Challenge is all about encouraging the development of humanoid robots that can complete the same tasks we humans do, but in more dangerous conditions – a robot that can get the job done when we don’t want to. When those participating in the challenge were announced last year, one entry really stood out. And today, NASA’s DRC robot actually exists. It’s called Valkyrie 1.

This robot looks a bit like Iron Man, but in white. It has a 1.9-meter-tall frame that weighs in at 125kg. That’s almost 6-feet-tall. Valkyrie 1 has 44 degrees of freedom, so it is very flexible. The arms alone have seven degrees of freedom and the legs six. Valkyrie 1 and the other entrants will have to perform tasks like climbing a ladder, driving a utility vehicle, and using tools. Therefore the design must be up to par.

Valkyrie 1 has cameras in its head, wrists, torso, and legs. This way the operator can get a view from almost any angle when controlling the robot. Its limbs are interchangeable, and most of the components can be removed in minutes, so this robot is easy to repair as well. You can see Valkyrie 1 in action in the clip below:

NASA Shows Off Valkyrie, A 6-Foot Tall Robot

The folks over at NASA must have received inspiration from the cartoon Macross which features the Valkyrie robot, after the space agency unveiled the 6-foot long Valkyrie, which they have dubbed as a “superhero robot”. It was specially designed to compete in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, and it has been touted to be a “female” robot – which could very well end up as a prototype model to the kind of robo-astronauts down the road which will help humanity in the quest to colonize Mars.

Just how complex is the Valkyrie? It will come with 44 axes of movement and interchangeable arms, tipping the scales at 275 pounds. Do expect it to go up against the likes of the Atlas robot from Boston Dynamic. Popular culture could have played a part in the design of the Valkyrie, where it sports an Iron Man-style glowing chest ring. Nicolaus Radford of the NASA JSC Dextrous Robotics Lab shared, “We really wanted to design the appearance of this robot to be one that when you saw it (you’d say) ‘Wow. That’s awesome.” When we were designing the robot, we were thinking about the competition from day one, and we wanted a very modular system. Specifically with the arm, we can yank one bolt and one connector, and we can take the arm off. It happens in a matter of minutes.”

CCP’s Oculus Rift demo becomes EVE: Valkyrie, space dogfighting due in 2014 (video)

DNP EVR becomes Eve Valkyrie for Oculus Rift, out 2014

We’ve been waiting for a proper Wing Commander successor for ages and it looks like EVE: Valkyrie could be it — if you don’t count Star Citizen, that is. What was originally demoed as EVR back at EVE Fanfest and on the Oculus Rift HD at E3 is now a multiplayer space dogfighter set within developer CCP’s longstanding EVE Online universe. Details are as scarce as Megacyte, but, according to the Icelandic dev, it’s coming out in 2014. It’s a sure lock for a PC release, but CCP’s history with the PS3 EVE spin-off Dust 514 and Sony’s amoré for the Rift makes us wonder if consoles are in its future. Hopefully this means we’ll be able to play on PS4 at some point, but instead of holding our breath, we’ll just keep watching the trailer below on repeat.
