Bentley 2014 Continental GT V8 S: 0 to 60 in 4.3, 512HP and 26.8 MPG, Say What?

Bentley has unveiled a new super luxurious sports car offering more power and more performance for well-heeled buyers. The car will be officially unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and is called the Continental GT V8 S. The car is dead sexy and massive tipping the scales at 5060 pounds for the coupe.

A convertible version of the car weighs in at 5445 pounds. Both cars use the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 521 hp and 502 pound-foot of torque. Despite the massive girth of the vehicles, the coupe version is able to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds and claims a top speed of 192 mph. Not too shabby.

The convertible version is able to make the Sprint to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 191 mph. Despite the high-powered V-8 and the lumbering size of the vehicle, the coupe still has a combined fuel economy rating of 26.8 mpg with convertible rated at 25.9 MPG, providing an impressive range of 500 miles per tank.

The official price for the 2014 Continental GT V8 S is unannounced at this time, but it’s safe to say “stupid expensive” is about right.

500 km/h Duck-billed Trainipus Resumes Testing in Japan

Japan already has some the fastest commuter trains in the world – with railways crisscrossing the country running as fast as small aircraft. While the country is already home to some incredibly speedy trains, Central Japan Railway Co. recently resumed testing of a next-generation train that’s even faster. This next-gen train uses maglev technology, and an unusual shape to help it travel at up to 500 kilometers-per-hour (~310 mph).

Traveling at that speed, the train will be able to go from Tokyo to Nagoya in only 40 min. Current high-speed trains in Japan need 95 minutes to travel the same 286 km distance. The train is currently being tested on a 42.8 km long maglev test line.

Building out the maglev line to span the whole 286 km is expected to cost around $52 billion (USD). Construction is set to begin in April 2014 and the builders will have to tunnel under the skyscrapers of Tokyo and the Japanese Alps in order to complete the route.

At least at top speed you won’t have to look at its ugly mug.

RoboTech SuperCar: Autonomous Cars Shrink Down to Size

Have you ever wanted ride shotgun in a robotic car as it drives around your neighborhood? Sure, autonomous cars are still very expensive, but how about miniature version? I bet you hadn’t though of that, but a couple of engineers came up with this scaled-down version of Google’s driverless car.

The RoboTech SuperCar is a toy car kit, powered by an Arduino controller. It has RGB LED headlights and tail lights, an ultrasonic sensor, and a 24-pin RC bus that can interface with its microcontroller. The car can operate in several modes, including full RC, computer-assisted RC, or fully-autonomous driving.

The benefit is that it’s low cost compared to a full-size autonomous car, and I’m sure that you can have your own robotic invasion fleet ready soon. It’s definitely something quite ingenious to have around if you want to spy on your neighbors.

Custom Willys Jeep Rat Rod Eats Dirt for Breakfast

What do you get when someone decides to “rat-rod” a Willys Jeep from 1945? Rat rods are custom cars that imitate and exaggerate early hot rods. I have to say that despite its low ground clearance, this particular rat looks like it could go toe to toe with dune buggies.

The team at Randy Ellis Design were inspired by the 1945 Willys Jeep. This kind of Jeep was used by the US Army in World War II. However, these guys built their vehicle from scratch with a custom fiberglass shell. There are some authentic Willys parts throughout the build, but it has plenty of modern features like an air bag suspension that gives it 7-inches of travel. It’s powered by a 1977 Chevy 350 V8, which is coupled with a 3-speed automatic transmission for plenty of torque.

This ride does look pretty awesome, though I wonder how it would fare in a race against a dedicated sport UTV like the Polaris RZR.

Ford Makes Fiesta More Appetizing with a Bacon Wrap

Two of my favorite things in all the world are cars and bacon. I think bacon is the reason God put pigs on earth and the man who invented bacon should be immortalized on Mount Rushmore. I also happen to think that the Ford Fiesta is one of the least attractive cars on the market.

However, I do like bacon and Ford has announced some custom bacon graphics specifically for the 2014 Fiesta. The most bacontastic of the wraps is the one you see in the image above – showing 12 salty and crispy slices of bacon spread all around the car. That is a somewhat over the top representation of your love for salty pork in my book.

Ford does have a few other bacon graphics that you can add to your car if you’re looking for something a little more subtle. My favorite are the bacon racing stripes, a pair of bacon strips that you can place on the hood of your Fiesta that resemble classic dual racing stripes.

Ford also offers the side of bacon graphics with two individual strips of bacon wrapped over the rear wheels. Ford created these bacon themed wraps in celebration of International Bacon Day. Yes, that is the official holiday for bacon, which happens on August 31 each year.

Aston Martin DBC Concept Wants to Give Enzo a Run for Its Money

Aston Martin makes some beautiful cars, and I have to say that I really like the look of this concept DBC. The low stance and curved lines are reminiscent of a McLaren, and it looks very fast and agile.

The Aston Martin DBC concept was created by Samir Sadikhov, and it feels like a mix between modern Aston Martins and cars like the McLaren MP4-12C.

While it’s improbable that Aston Martin will ever a mid-engine car – since they have stated that their cars are grand tourers – it would be quite amazing to see their brand on a car like this.

All things considered, Aston Martin should definitely create something like this, even if it is just a limited edition. After all, wouldn’t you like to see James Bond driving one of these?

Finally, Someone Made a Visor For Your Car’s Side Mirrors

Finally, Someone Made a Visor For Your Car's Side Mirrors

Most cars have wipers on the front and back windshields, and some even on the the headlights. But you’ll be hard pressed to find a vehicle with wiper blades on the side mirrors which get just as wet and obscured when it’s raining. So instead of just crossing your fingers and hoping you’re not cutting someone off when switching lanes, try a set of these cheap $9 side mirror visors to keep them dry.

Ferrari 458 Speciale: Making the Italia Even More Special(e)

Is it possible to improve the Ferrari 458 Italia? Well, even Ferrari seems to think so, thanks to the plethora of different versions of the car that are available right now. The latest and greatest is the Speciale, which will premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10th, in Germany.

ferrari 458 speciale front

When compared with a stock 458, the Ferrari 458 Speciale has an improved aerodynamic efficiency index, making it more slippery at faster speeds. It’s got a more powerful naturally-aspirated 4.5L V8, that develops 596 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. This will make it go pretty fast –  from 0 to 62 mph in just three seconds. It’s also got the highest lateral acceleration (1.33 G) of any Ferrari.

It will launch in a couple of weeks, so all of you speed freaks can start salivating. It’s definitely got awesome performance, but I kind of cringe at discovering the retail price (which hasn’t been announced yet).

Kaist Armadillo-T Foldable Electric Vehicle: Open to Drive

As cities are plagued with more and more traffic congestion, it will become harder to drive as well as park your typical car. The Armadillo-T will help alleviate the problem. The electric-powered vehicle was developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and it has some unusual features.
armadillot
It was designed to reduce the amount of space used when a car is parked and not in use. This way you can fit more cars in an area or just claim more of your garage for other things. It uses a 13.6 kWh battery and can travel up to 37 miles per hour with about a 60 mile range per charge.

In order to have it fold just right, they ditched the concept traditional rear view mirrors and instead installed surround-view cameras. When closed its size goes down to just 1.65 meters-long. The rear end slides forward, folding up vertically. It can also rotate 360 degrees when folded, so that it can be moved about. Pretty awesome idea.
