Disney World Gets Updated Test Track Ride

Chevrolet and engineers from Disney World have been working together for 18 months to create a new ride at Epcot Center. The attraction is called the Test Track Presented by Chevrolet and it opened this week. The goal of the ride is to allow visitors to get an idea of what goes into designing a Chevrolet vehicle, and replaces the old GM Test Track ride that opened back in 1999.

The ride has three different major components with guests first having the opportunity to design their own vehicle. The vehicle can be a car, truck, or crossover. The next step is getting visitors a chance to test drive the vehicle design through a roller-coaster-like ride on track surfaces that simulate actual vehicle validation processes that Chevrolet uses.

The last step is giving the guests an opportunity to race their vehicle over changing terrain and in extreme conditions on a digital driving simulation to compare them to others. Visitors also get a chance to produce and share a TV commercial starring the custom vehicle and pose for action shots in front of their car. Check out the complete ride in the video below (spoilers).

Motorized LEGO Tumbler: Where Does He Get Those Wonderful Toys?

This LEGO motorized Tumbler is so detailed that you might think it was made by Wayne Industries, but it was actually made by a guy named Sariel. The man should build for Batman himself – or at least change his name to Lucius.

Moj.io Makes Cars Smarter, Drivers Safer, Stalkers Stalkier

Everyday objects are slowly being infused with modern technology.  There are fridges that can monitor their contents and automatically order online to restock themselves, socks that know how many times they’ve been washed and now, with the help of a tiny device, your car can be made so smart, it knows when it’s being towed and will tell you so.

moj io car internet connected device

This device is called the moj.io. I know, I wish they had come up with a better name. But the folks behind it probably spent all their brain power on the device itself, because it sounds very promising. The moj.io connects to the Internet via cellular networks and to your car via the On-Board Diagnostics OBD-II port (found in all major automotive lines since 1995). Once connected and paired to your mobile device, the moj.io can tell you where your car is located, if it’s being towed, the car’s overall condition and more. moj.io apps can also be more proactive. They can hold calls and text alerts while you’re driving to keep you safer or send text message alerts based on the speed and location of the car. Parents and obsessed lovers will find that one useful.

Pledge at least $89 (USD) on Indiegogo to reserve a moj.io unit. But because it needs to be online – as of now, it’s partnered with T-Mobile in the USA and Rogers in Canada – expect to pay extra for an Internet subscription. U.S. pricing is $7.99/month or $79/year, and canadian pricing is $12.99/month or $119/year. Though if you buy on Indiegogo, you get your first 3 months of service for free.

I’m sure some people have a few privacy concerns with having a device like this available to everyone, but I think that overall the benefits outweigh the risks. Besides, tracking technology has been available for a long time now, it’s just that now it’s in the hands of common folk.

Brave Robotics Transforming Robot Car Rolls out

Remember the toy car that transforms into a robot? The inventor Kenji Ishida is playing Santa to those of you who wished you could buy one. He’s selling 10 units of the latest version of his robot, which has a couple of new tricks up its robot sleeves.

In addition to being remote controlled and transformable, the 1:12 scale robot can now fire plastic projectiles from its arms and has a camera that can send live footage over a Wi-Fi connection.

You can order the robot from Ishida’s company Brave Robotics (his site is currently experiencing heavy traffic). The price isn’t listed, but you can bet it’ll be expensive. The robot will come fully assembled and programmed along with a wireless controller, four rechargeable batteries, a battery charger, a “motion edit software” and a serial cable. If you think you won’t be able to afford this model, keep saving: Ishida plans to release a life-sized robot car by 2030.

Toyota 4×4 CRAWL Control Lets You Focus on Steering While Off-Roading

While driving off-road can be a lot of fun, it can also be a challenging and dangerous activity, especially if you’re not a skilled 4×4 driver. Well thanks to some cool technology in Toyota’s trucks you can rest a little easier when driving off-road or in challenging terrain.

I recently had an opportunity to test out a couple of Toyota’s trucks with their new five-speed CRAWL control, a technology which helps drivers focus on steering while off-road, increasing safety and driving efficiency in difficult terrain.

toyota crawl control

At the center of the system is the ability for the vehicle to automatically regulate engine speed and braking force, while all the driver needs to do is turn the wheel. So when you’re making your way across rough ground or steep grades, the truck can do almost all of the work for you.  The system works its magic by watching the wheel speed at each corner of the vehicle, and modulates the powertrain and braking system to ensure a safe and stable speed as you navigate treacherous roads.

You can use lower speeds to navigate rocky terrain downhill, while the higher speeds are best for uphill climbs on rocks, snow or gravel. Plus it works in either Drive or Reverse. And even if you’re not going off-road, the Hill-Start assist feature is very helpful if you live somewhere with steep hills. It automatically holds the car still at the top of a hill, so you don’t constantly need to keep your foot on both the brake and the gas.

There’s also a nifty mode called Off-Road Turn Assist which helps you make extremely tight turns by pulsing the rear brakes individually, depending on the direction of the steer. Think of what happens if you lock up a single wheel on a shopping cart – it pivots. This same principle is at work here, and all you need to do is turn the wheel. The truck takes care of the rest.

The five-speed CRAWL Control system is standard on Toyota’s 2013 Land Cruiser, and an option available on the FJ Cruiser’s Off-road and Trail Teams editions, as well as on the 4Runner Trail edition.

Grand Theft Auto: RISE is Live-Action GTA Goodness

Some of the new live-action short films that have been surfacing for video game such as Halo 4 and made more than a few gamers ache for high-quality Hollywood content based on our favorite video games. I know the Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn series made me very sad that Hollywood cancel the live-action Halo movie that was in the works.

gta rise

short film has surfaced based on the Grand Theft Auto series that uses live-action mixed with some slick computer-generated graphics. The short film was directed by Gevorg Karensky and looks exactly how you’d expect a real-world version of the video game to look.

The short shows GTA IV main character Niko Bellic on a thrilling mission to recover a smartphone. I’m really digging this live-action short, which you can check out above.

111-Foot-Long Train Made of Chocolate: Choo-Choo… Chew!

Who doesn’t love chocolate? You can never have too much. You probably wish that you had a train-load of chocolate delivered to you every day. But what about a train that is actually made of the sweet stuff? A 111-foot-long chocolate train. Now that sounds delicious.

This train was created by “master chocolatier” Andrew Farrugia of Malta. It’s 2,755 pounds of fine Belgian chocolate – 6.5 million calories if you are counting.

He got the idea for the train last year, when visiting the Belgian Chocolate Festival in Bruges, with the thought that you can make a train as long as you want. Overall, it took Farrugia 784 hours to build this incredible thing, which is now officially the world’s longest chocolate sculpture ever built.

I call dibs on the engine. That’s always the chocolatiest part of any chocolate train.

If Batman Can Have a Batmobile, Why Can’t Doctor Who Have a TARDIS-Mobile?

While the TARDIS seems like a pretty decent way to travel through space and time, it’s not exactly the best vehicle for getting through rush hour traffic on the expressway. This ride seems like it might be a better mode of urban transportation, especially along with today’s best GPS navigation systems.

tardis scion car

This mashup between a TARDIS and a Scion xB was created by DeviantArtist ~Ificial-Art, and it looks awesome. I’ve been told that it’s so big inside that it seats 100. That could make for the ultimate clown car.

Unfortunately, it’s just a Photoshop job and not a real car. Though I think if a car manufacturer were to make these for real, they’d sell millions thousands hundreds dozens at least a few to some diehard Whovians out there.

GM and ABB Create Uninterruptible Power Supply for Homes Using Old Volt Batteries

General Motors has announced that it has teamed up with a company called ABB to come up with away to use the batteries inside of the Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle after they’re no longer usable in the car. The batteries used in EVs have typically only used up about 30% of their total life when they’re no longer viable for automotive use.

The two companies have come up with an interesting secondary use for the batteries that was shown off recently at the GM Electrification Experience.

The partnership resulted in a prototype uninterruptible power supply that used five Volt batteries. The prototype system provided 25kW of power and 50kWh of energy during the event. In fact, the batteries inside the prototype system powered all of the lighting and audiovisual systems needed for the Electrification Event.

The idea is that one of these five battery modular units would be able to provide two hours of uninterrupted electricity to between three and five average American homes during a power outage. The uninterruptible power supplies could also be used to keep industrial facilities operating as well. There’s no indication of when these uninterruptible power supplies might be available on the commercial market.
