Gourmet on the Go: Vending Machine Dispenses Caviar and Escargot

There has definitely been no shortage of vending machines as of late, especially of the strange variety. There was the vending machine that dished out dishes, the one that served up random reads, and the one that let you bypass unpleasant postal workers.

Now check out this vending machine that serves you gourmet food, a la carte!

Gourmet VendingThese vending machines were installed by gourmet food supplier Beverly Hills Caviar in various malls in Los Angeles. Now shoppers who suddenly feel like getting a serving of caviar or escargot can just walk over to the machine and dine away.

When fully stocked, the vending machines carry about $50,000 worth of food products. You can expect to find over 24 varieties of caviar plus exotic food ingredients and dishes like black truffles, white truffle oil, blinis, and bottarga.

It wouldn’t seem appropriate to chow down on caviar using plastic spoons and forks from the food court, so the machine is also stocked with spoons and dishes crafted from mother of pearl.

When it comes to food and drink from a vending machine (there are vending machines that cough up iPods and other kinds of consumer electronics, but that is a different story for another day), these tend to be more on the budget-friendly side. Well, perhaps it is time to kick things up a notch – and thanks to the efforts of gourmet food supplier, Beverly Hills Caviar, they managed to install a set of vending machines in certain Los Angeles malls which will be able to serve up fresh caviar, escargot, and other kinds of exotic foodstuff. Needless to say, the name Beverly Hills itself smells of bling, so it is not unexpected to find some of the goods in these freshly minted vending machines to cost you as much as $500.

Just to get a little bit of context, Beverly Hills Caviar is a business that delivers luxury cuisine around the world, where they operate one by-appointment-only specialty store, so the move to use a vending machine in order to distribute expensive food within a mall does not seem to be in character with such a company at all. Well, Beverly Hills Caviar thinks otherwise, as they see such vending machines to be the ideal tool to make its products far more accessible to its usual range of clients in addition to the general public.

These vending machines will come with more than 24 varieties of caviar which is carefully sourced from around the world, where they will range from the $30/oz American Black Caviar to the Imperial River Beluga, which will cost you a wallet burning $500 per ounce. Not only that, you can also pick from a slew of other gourmet foods and cooking ingredients, where among them include escargot, black truffles, white truffle oil, blinis, bottarga, and premium salts. Heck, there is even a vegan type of caviar which is made up of seaweed and a red salmon caviar which was carefully made just for our four legged friends – dogs and cats. Just to make sure you do not end up eating fine caviar with a plastic fork, the machine does dispense mother of pearl spoons and dishes – at a fine price too, of course.

Pochtomat: Package Vending Machine Eliminates Need for Surly Postal Workers

People seem to be coming up with all sorts of bizarre ways to get people’s packages to them. First, there was Cardrops, which is a start-up that delivers your stuff to your car trunk instead of your home. And now there’s Pochtomat, which isn’t really a delivery service since you have to go pick up your package yourself.

Pochtomat“Wait a minute,” you might say. “That doesn’t make the Pochtomat much different from the post office.” Well, that’s where you’re wrong, because the packages are left off in the Pochtomat at a railway station near you.

The most unusual thing? The Pochtomat is actually a vending machine that gives you your stuff after you key in confirmation on the touchscreen controls, eliminating the need for humans to handle the menial task of handing you a parcel. You’ll be sent a text message or email informing you that your package is already at the Pochtomat you chose to have it delivered to. It’ll only be there for three days before it’ll be shipped off to a warehouse, so it’s best that you don’t delay when claiming it.

The Pochtomat has already been installed in 17 railway stations in Russia, with installations planned in more stations.

Biblio-Mat Vending Machine Serves up Bookworms with Random Reads

Love books? Love surprises? Then you’ll love the Biblio-Mat. It’s a one-of-a-kind vending machine that dispenses random books so you can say goodbye to boring afternoons and evenings.

BibliomatThe good news? It only costs two bucks a pop. The bad news? The Biblio-Mat is only for bookworms who live in Toronto. So if you happen to live close to the Monkey’s Paw, then it’s good news for you all the way.

The Biblio-Mat was built by Craig Small for the antiquarian Monkey’s Paw bookstore and it’s seriously one of the most ingenious things that I have ever seen.

Biblio-Mat books, which vary widely in size and subject matter, cost two dollars. The machine was conceived as an artful alternative to the ubiquitous and often ignored discount sidewalk bin. When a customer puts coins into it, the Biblio-Mat dramatically whirrs and vibrates as the machine is set in motion. The ring of an old telephone bell enhances the thrill when the customer’s mystery book is delivered with a satisfying clunk into the receptacle below.

Coke Peak Shift Vending Machines In Japan

We all know that Japan is one country that is unbelievably clean, and the folks there do have a very high regard for the environment. Well, Coca-Cola Japan is doing its part by unveiling a spanking new range of innovative energy-saving vending machines that is known as Peak shift vending machines. These vending machines will be able to shift the use of power for cooling from the general daytime peak demand period to nighttime, where relatively speaking, there is a whole lot less amount of strain which is placed on power supply.

During summer, these machines will be able to provide cooled products for 16 hours – all the while reducing daytime power consumption by a whopping 95%. Power consumption will also be lowered during winter time by 20% compared to current vending machines, and when you merge that with the amount of juice consumed for cooling, we are talking about a potential game changer, being a vending machine that potentially reduces power consumption by 68%. Around 25,000 of these new vending machines will be installed throughout Japan next year.

Give the Gift of Pepsi and Win Free Drinks on PepsiCo’s Interactive Vending Machine

Months after Coca-Cola rolled out their ‘Open Happiness’ vending machines, Pepsi is following suit. They won’t be giving away free bottles of soda for hugs, although you will be able to give people the gift of Pepsi and play a game to score free drinks.

pepsi interactive vending machine
You can buy drinks for yourself or for a friend. To send a gift to someone, all you have to do is punch in the recipient’s email address and name. The machine will then send them a code, which they can key in on the machine to claim. Of course, that assumes your friend is somewhere near one of these machines as well.

The Pepsi vending machine is also programmed with a game that you can play to win 20-ounce beverage bottles for yourself.

Pretty cool vending machine, but I prefer Coca-Cola’s because, really, what can beat getting free Coke for a hug? What do you think?

The PepsiCo Interactive Vending Machine dispenses Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sierra Mist Natural, Aquafina and Lipton Green Tea, and can be found at Columbiana Centre (Columbia, SC), Clackamas Town Center (Happy Valley, OR), Oglethorpe Mall (Savannah, GA), Oakwood Mall (Eau Claire, WI) and Park City Center (Lancaster, PA).

DreamVendor Prints 3D Objects, Not Dreams

3D printing is the bee’s knees, but we’re not printing our masterpieces yet – 3D printed essays! Yeah! – because 3D printers are still quite expensive, and of course 3D modeling isn’t exactly common knowledge. Virginia Tech has a solution for the former problem: the Dream Vendor.

dream vendor 3d printer by virginia tech

The Dream Vendor resides in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. It doesn’t sell its services because anyone can use the machine for free. The Dream Vendor is made up of four Thing-O-Matics, an old model of 3D printers from MakerBot. Instead of money, users insert an SD card containing the 3D template and the Dream Vendor – which we now realize is misnamed – will print the object.

I wonder if it’s possible to print another Dream Vendor part-by-part.

EatWave vending machine serves up piping hot food

Vending machines that serve food do not do too well when it comes to hot food, such as porridge. After all, cold sandwiches are easy to store, but EatWave Vending of San Diego, California, has come up with the EatWave – a patent pending, fully automated and refrigerated vending machine that boasts of an internal microwave cooking unit. In a nutshell, EatWave is able to heat up your pre-packaged hot food items in under a minute, as well as deliver a range of snack, cold food and cold drink items, all from a single machine. This is definitely unprecedented, as machines in the past were specialized in the kind of food or drink that they served, perhaps with the exception of drinks machines that deliver both hot and cold drinks.

Andrew Preston, CEO of EatWave Vending, said, “EatWave allows vending operators and locations to conserve space and energy by replacing multiple vending machines with our single hot and cold design. EatWave is perfect for office break-rooms, hotels, schools, airports and other locations wanting to offer a complete meal for people on the go looking to grab a quick bite.”

The asking price for the EatWave is not cheap though, as it retails for $11,995 a pop. Needless to say, if you want to install the EatWave on a large scale, perhaps negotiating for a group package might be your best bet. [Press Release]

iPhone Mini Vending Machine Case Won’t Eat Your Money

I have a love-hate relationship with vending machines. They’re often loaded with tasty, junk food treats, but the type with those stupid turning wire racks often get stuck and you end up losing your money, or with a vending machine on top of you if you shake it too vigorously. Now, you can have a constant reminder of these machines with you, wherever you take your iPhone.

The iPhone Vending Machine case from Luckybrew Designs features a photorealistic image of a snack machine, loaded with all sorts of goodies, including potato chips, Doritos, M&Ms and Ho-Hos and even pink Sno-Balls. Why couldn’t I have ever worked in a place with a vending machine selection like this? Every office I ever worked in had a crappy selection of wintergreen Certs, Necco wafers and 5-year-old egg salad sandwiches in its machines. But I digress…

iphone vending machine case

The vending machine case is available over on Etsy for $15.88(USD), and comes in black or white plastic or rubber, as well as a clear plastic, and is currently only available for the iPhone 4 and 4S. That said, I’m sure they’ll get around to an iPhone 5 version at some point. So the next time you’re tempted to shake a vending machine when it eats your quarters, just whip out your iPhone instead and jostle it around a bit.

Vending machine dishes out organic milk

When it comes to getting fresh milk, you can purchase yours off the shelf from the local store, or milk the cow in your barn, it cannot get any fresher than that. However, some of us who prefer to live out the organic lifestyle are able to check out this particular vending machine in the small British town of Kingham, where it actually dishes out organic, non-homogenized milk from Guernsey cows.

All you need to do is drop a few coins into the vending machine, and organic milk will be dispensed into a glass bottle with a screw top. The machine is the possession of Adam and Caroline Fleming, where the couple runs the nearby Nell’s Dairy and will fill it up with fresh milk every couple of days. The inspiration behind this vending machine came after they spotted a somewhat similar idea when holidaying in Italy some time back. Guess having the supermarket closed is not going to be an issue as long as you have the right amount of spare change!
