Nokia Lumia 9XX (920 variant) headed for Verizon Wireless?

It was not too long ago when we were talking about just how there should be a Nokia Lumia 920 variant arriving on other mobile carriers, considering how there was the Nokia Lumia 820 variant which was announced for T-Mobile recently while coming in the form of the Lumia 810. There are whispers being sent back and forth in the online world, and these should normally be taken with a huge grain of salt, so here goes.

Viipottaja and Peter_L were trading tweets about the possibility of a new Lumia 920 variant arriving on Verizon Wireless, where one of the tweets from a Nokia PureView fan mentioned, “Finally got. Hands on lumia 9XX for verizon, can you guess it???what phone is that??? Hint wp8 of course“ with a different tweet that read, “Another hint: wireless charging and thinner lighter better #SwitchToLumia”. Of course, all of that could just be random conversations before by others concerning a Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon, but who knows what the future might bring? Just what do you think?

Verizon Nokia Lumia 822 appears in leaked photos

Photos have emerged of the Nokia Lumia 822, which is the yet-to-be-released Verizon version of the Nokia Lumia 820. The Nokia Lumia 822 is a Windows Phone 8 smartphone, and is joined in the Lumia family by the 920 and 810 models. Little is known about this phone, but the pictures show that it is a sleek handset with an interesting matte-type finish on the back.

The Nokia 822 will, presumably, have the same specifications as the Nokia Lumia 820, considering the only difference between the two is the 822′s exclusivity to Verizon and slight differences in the way the device is shaped. The mobile gadget is mid-range all around, with a 4.3 inch WVGA display, and a front camera and 8MP rear camera. The Lumia 820 is an LTE device, so it’s safe to assume that the Lumia 822 will support Verizon’s 4G LTE.

Nokia’s push of the Lumia models across multiple US carriers puts it in a precarious – and potentially lucrative – position. With the right marketing, the Lumia models could give the company a large sales jump. Due to the newness of Windows Phone 8, however, and Nokia’s “meh” status at the moment, without the right marketing hook, consumers may hesitate to take the jump, causing the entire endeavor to flounder.

There’s no word yet on when the Nokia Lumia 822 will be available from Verizon, or what its price will be. Because the phone is mid-range, with moderate specs, its probably safe to assume that the price will be lowish. Rumor says this handset will be released sometime around the HTC 8X‘s launch.

Nokia’s Not-So-Shy Lumia 822 Caught On Camera Clad In Verizon Branding

822-3

AT&T and T-Mobile have already pulled back the curtains (well, mostly) on their stock of Nokia Lumia Windows Phones, but rival carrier Verizon has remained awfully quiet on the matter. That may soon change though, as a pair of newly leaked images point to the existence of a Lumia 820 variant meant for Verizon’s airwaves.

As you’d expect, the device — which WMPowerUser’s tipster refers to as the Lumia 822 — reportedly packs the same WVGA display and 8-megapixel rear camera that its cousin the 820 does, and there’s a strong chance that internals remain similarly unchanged. That tell-tale stamp on the 822’s butt means the device is also meant to play nice with Verizon’s 4G LTE network as well, though that’s really not much of a surprise.

Nokia has clearly taken some liberties with regard to industrial design here, as the 822 appears to be a much rounder affair and the other 800 series Windows Phones the Finnish company has signed off on. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem quite as thick as the downright brick-like Lumia 810 that T-Mobile recently laid claim to. It’s also worth noting that the model number attached to the device seems like a peculiar choice for a Lumia, but it’s not like Nokia doesn’t throw the occasional numerical curveball.

Perhaps naturally, this is isn’t the first time Verizon’s Lumia has been spotted. This whole sordid turn of events began earlier this week, when the notorious leaker(s) behind the @evleaks Twitter account distributed a render of the Verizon-bound Windows Phone (codenamed “Atlas”) for all to see, and it just so happens these new leaked photos match up quite nicely. Of course, a render can only tell you so much. Hell, even with these new images to consider, a number of the Lumia 822’s particulars still can’t be discern with any real degree of certainty. For now we’ll just have to wait until Verizon comes clean on this little guy’s existence — or for some new leaks to blow everything wide open.

Samsung confirms October 24th event is for the US Galaxy Note II, removes what doubt was left

Ever since Samsung issued invitations for its October 24th event, it’s become increasingly clearer that the New York City gathering would center on the Galaxy Note II. After all, we’ve tried almost every US version so far, and nothing else has loomed on the horizon. Just in case there was any lingering uncertainty, though, Samsung sent us that promised formal invitation with exact details of what’s going on: it’s the US stop for the Galaxy Note II World Tour, with a press event that night followed by a “consumer celebration” later on that might bring a public side to the affair. Most American editions of the phablet have been announced or re-announced, which suggests to us that we’ll primarily get firmer release dates and prices while we’re busy hobnobbing.

Verizon-bound Nokia Lumia 822 surfaces in leaked photos

Verizon-bound Nokia Lumia 822 surfaces in leaked photos

We caught a glimpse of a Verizon-branded Windows Phone 8 handset by the name of Atlas in a leaked image yesterday, and now new photos give us a closer look at the smartphone. According to WMPoweruser, who received the photos from a tipster, the device is a Nokia Lumia 820 variant and will be exclusive to Big Red as the Lumia 822. Though it’s riffed on its progenitor’s design, the mobile will keep the same WVGA resolution and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera. There’s still no official word from Verizon or Nokia regarding the phone, but we expect that to change relatively soon.

Motorola RAZR HD Canada launch tips Verizon release

After numerous rumors and leaks throughout August, Motorola finally announced and unveiled its new DROID RAZR lineup last month, which included the new DROID RAZR HD. However, they were a little shy on some details — mainly availability and pricing. However, Canadian wireless carrier Rogers just announced the device for use on their network, which means we may see the device jump over the border shortly.

The DROID RAZR HD comes packing with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. It also comes with an 8MP rear camera that offers zero shutter lag and burst mode. The phone sports the signature Kevlar design of other RAZR devices, making the phone lighter and more durable, while keeping it thin.

What makes the device really stand out, though, is its HD display that it touts in its name. It’s a quite remarkable 4.7-inch AMOLED HD display that has a 1280×720 HD resolution. The device also packs in 4G LTE and runs off of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’s expected to get a Jelly Bean update fairly soon.

Along with the DROID RAZR HD, we also might see its close brother, the DROID RAZR MAXX HD, hit Verizon around the same time. Obviously, we’re still not sure what the timeline is for an American launch of these devices, but in the meantime, check out our hands on of the DROID RAZR HD and the MAXX HD to get a better idea of the two phones.

The RAZR HD from Rogers is available today and pricing starts at $99.99 after a 3-year contract, or you can pay a full $599.99 for the device without a contract.

Wilson Electronics releases three 4G multi-band signal boosters, no soup for Sprint

DNP Wilson Electronics releases three 4G multiband signal boosters, none for Sprint

Even if you live in an area with 4G coverage, you might not get the best service inside certain buildings, and that’s where companies like Wilson Electronics come in — just take a peek at its Sleek 4G-V, for example. At MobileCon 2012, the antenna maker added three more to its lineup. They are the Tri-band 4G-V, the Tri-band 4G-A, and the Tri-band 4G-C, and are meant for Verizon’s 4G LTE, AT&T’s 4G LTE, and T-Mobile’s “faux-G” network — the latter of which is also recommended for use throughout Canada. The antennas are designed to boost the signal of older legacy networks too, so no worries if you don’t live in an area blessed with 4G. No pricing and availability just yet, and we don’t see any sign of a Sprint antenna either. To get more details, catch the full PR after the break.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 9, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening, everyone. Earlier today, we found out that Samsung may be planning a Nexus 10 tablet, complete with a resolution to give the third-gen iPad a run for its money. ZTE gave its response to yesterday’s allegations that it may be helping the Chinese government spy on the US, and Apple started shipping the fifth-generation iPod Touch to the first customers today. We heard that the rumored 32GB Nexus 7 variant might be replacing the 16GB model, and speaking of the Nexus 7, it received Android 4.1.2 today, which adds a much-needed landscape mode.

NASA’s Curiosity rover has scooped up its first “handful” of Martian soil, while Verizon announced today that it will have 4G LTE in 418 US markets by the end of the day on October 16. Not only did Samsung announce the Galaxy Music smartphone today, but it also started teasing a “groundbreaking” Windows 8 device reveal for October 15. Microsoft has released a Windows 8 update ahead of its launch at the end of this month, while we heard that Windows Phone 8 pre-orders might open up on October 21.

Despite Apple’s best efforts, its Lightning chip has been cloned, and today the company was said to be in a long-running relationship with a carbon fiber manufacturer. We got to take a look at some snazzy new iPad Mini renders today, and were told that BlackBerry 10 might not launch until sometime in March 2013. Today was the day that Felix Baumgartner was supposed to attempt his record-breaking skydive, but at the last minute Red Bull had to pull the plug on the mission due to bad weather, with tomorrow’s jump called off for the same reason. Firefox 16 was released today, and Amazon filed a new patent for an online haggling system.

Ice Cream Sandwich finally hit the Motorola Atrix 2 today, while Jelly Bean was arriving on Galaxy S IIIs in Korea. Tens of thousands of Chrome users have fallen victim to a bogus adware app claiming to be Rovio’s Bad Piggies, and Valve has invited players to fill out playtest surveys for a chance to come into the studio to test new games and hardware. Gearbox released the Mechromancer DLC for Borderlands 2 a week early today, and the Humble Bundle is back, only this time it doesn’t feature any games. Skype users are being plagued by a trojan, so if you use the service a lot, it’s probably a good idea to check out our post to see what you can do to stop it from infecting your computer.

Finally tonight, we have a pair of original posts for your to read through. Chris Davies tells us why a Nexus 10 won’t solve Google’s problem with getting developers to make apps aimed at Android tablets, while Chris Burns has given us a review of the Acer TravelMate P243 notebook. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Verizon 4G LTE coverage blasts past year-end goals

The folks at Verizon have today let it be known that their 4G LTE network will be covering 417 U.S. markets by the end of the day on October 18th, this destroying their year-end goals entirely. With a year-end goal at 400 markets total for 4G LTE in the USA, Verizon was more than happy to show off its greatness in a press conference today. This announcement was accompanied by assurances that the iPhone 5 launch has gone well so far and that their 4G LTE network has not given way to the massive amount of recently activated devices across the nation.

With data use on the rise, especially in the 4G LTE-using environment, it would seem that Verizon would have their network stability well in mind. As it stands, the company is not worried, noting with CNET that they’re fine with the pressure. “We’re not running that close to the edge”, said Nicola Palmer, vice president of network operations for Verizon.

A celebration of the accomplishments Verizon has made with their quick market spread will be held in Marquette, Michigan. This city was the 400th to receive Verizon 4G LTE coverage and a lovely little party is planned – though it’ll likely be friends and family only, of course. This point marks one in which Verizon will start expanding markets almost exclusively, with 2013 being a year of expansion of already-covered markets rather than a blast of new ones.

New cities in this latest addition include the following:

Gadsden, Ala.; Chico/Oroville, Calif.; Owensboro, Ky.; Waterville/Augusta, Maine; Marquette, Mich.; Brainerd and Fergus Falls/Alexandria, Minn.; Hattiesburg and Laurel, Miss.; Columbia, Mo.; Norfolk and North Platte, Neb.; Clovis, N.M.; Jamestown, N.Y.; Bend and Medford/Grants Pass, Ore.; Amarillo and Victoria, Texas; Aberdeen and Walla Walla, Wash; and Morgantown, W. Va.

Extended coverage has been added to the following companies as well:

Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Bakersfield, Fresno and Los Angeles, Calif.; New Haven/Waterbury, Conn.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Albany/Tifton, Athens and Gainesville, Ga.; Hilo and Honolulu, Hawaii; Idaho Falls and Pocatello, Idaho; Bloomington, Decatur/Effingham and Peoria, Ill.; Evansville, Ind.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Pittsburg/Parsons, Kan.; Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing, Mich.; St. Cloud, Minn.; Jackson, Miss.; Joplin and Kansas City, Mo.; Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M.; Albany/Schenectady, New York, Rochester and Syracuse, N.Y.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma, Wash.; and Casper/Gillette, Wyo.

Verizon Wireless To Hit 400 LTE Market Goal Ahead Of Schedule, Says CTO Nicola Palmer

nicola

It’s been less than two years since Verizon first lit up its 4G LTE network, and there’s little question that it’s been growing at a quick clip. To wit, Verizon Wireless CTO Nicola Palmer at MobileCON in San Diego announced the carrier will light up its 400th LTE market (Marquette, Michigan) on October 18, well ahead of the “end of the year” timeframe the carrier previously forecasted.

To put that in perspective, it took Verizon Wireless about eight years to fully flesh out its 3G footprint. Now that Verizon has a stronger grasp on how the process works, the carrier aims to blanket the entirety of its 3G footprint in LTE by the end of 2013.

Of course, the network’s speedy growth wasn’t without its share of hiccups — VZW customers may recall that a string of nationwide LTE outages toward the end of last year made holiday gadget buying and network usage problematic. Still, those periods of network spottiness didn’t seem to affect LTE device adoption too severely, seeing as how roughly 11 million of Verizon’s 89 million wireless subscribers have access to the high-speed data network.

Palmer also said that a full 35 percent of the carrier’s wireless data traffic was sent over its 4G LTE network, but that should change sooner rather than later. She also mentioned that “it wouldn’t be long” before a majority of that data would be transmitted over LTE. To that end, Palmer also pointed to a handful of new LTE markets that will be brought online in the coming weeks, pushing the total count to 417 live LTE areas. Here’s the full list in case you’re still crossing your fingers for some high-speed data:

Gadsden, Ala.; Chico/Oroville, Calif.; Owensboro, Ky.; Waterville/Augusta, Maine; Brainerd and Fergus Falls/Alexandria, Minn.; Hattiesburg and Laurel, Miss.; Columbia, Mo.; Norfolk and North Platte, Neb.; Clovis, N.M.; Jamestown, N.Y.; Bend and Medford/Grants Pass, Ore.; Amarillo and Victoria, Texas; Aberdeen and Walla Walla, Wash.; and Morgantown, W. Va.
