HTC’s 5-inch behemoth phone spied in press render, may be called One X 5 (update: some caution)

HTC One X 5 leak

Something big has been brewing at HTC, most often referred to as the DLX or by its less-than-flattering 6435LVW name. While there have been unconfirmed photos of prototypes floating around, a Sina Weibo user has posted what we have reason to believe is an authentic press image of the finished result: meet the One X 5. As the name and image suggest, the phablet-class device should be dominated by a 5-inch (and possibly 1080p) screen that makes even a regular One X look dainty. Internal details haven’t been nailed down alongside the looks, although previous benchmarks have had it using a Snapdragon S4 that might ultimately be a quad-core S4 Pro. There’s no immediate signs of a stylus or other tricks besides that sea of glass. We may not have long to wait before we find out, however. HTC just happens to have a New York City event planned for this Wednesday, and previously detected links between the 6435LVW and Verizon could see the One X 5 quickly reach the US if it’s meant to show at that gathering — although it might get another name change to fit into the Droid family.

Update: We’ve been given a heads-up that this is a device posted as a “concept” by Danny Tu on Flickr, which raises doubt that we’ll see exactly what’s on show here (or see that name). However, it still lines up with earlier photos and what we’ve heard. We’ll keep you posted as to whether or not it reflects reality in the end.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus update fixes signal issues?

If you happen to be rocking to a Galaxy Nexus over on Verizon, are you one of those who did run into signal issues that did not allow you to stick to a 4G connection for more than just a handful of minutes before the connection dropped? That would be an extremely frustrating experience to say the least, and some folks actually went through not one, two, or three, but half a dozen replacement devices before the issue did not affect the handset. Having said this, is version I515.10 of the software on the device the culprit?

Best Buy thinks so, hoping that the software update which will be introduced to these devices in a couple of days’ time will fix this niggling issue. Having said that, do not get your hopes up that the upcoming update will be the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, but rather, an interim software fix that will hopefully squash the signal issue bug.

Alleged Verizon Galaxy Note 2 gets pictured

What you see above is not exactly the clearest images of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that has been pictured in the while, and at the back you are able to make out the Verizon logo and name without mistaking it for a different mobile carrier. Well, we already know that the Galaxy Note 2 has been confirmed for T-Mobile in the US, with the rumors of a Dual SIM Galaxy Note 2 in the pipeline, so why not add to the merry family of Samsung’s latest phablet?

What you see above might not be the real deal due to it being a Photoshop job, but needless to say, we will not really know until Verizon releases an official confirmation on the device itself. At the back, as mentioned above, does show off the “Verizon 4G LTE” logo, which will point towards the fact that it will run on Verizon’s hyperfast LTE network. No idea on when it will be sold in retail stores, so stay tuned.

Verizon’s Galaxy Note II purportedly poses for the camera, over-branding included

Verizon's Galaxy Note 2 purportedly poses for the camera, over-branding included

Phablet lovers on Verizon may have reason to rejoice, because the carrier’s variant of the Galaxy Note II may have been captured in the flesh. The white device is aesthetically identical to the version straight from Samsung’s house, save for its questionable carrier-branding. While the back of the phone sports a seemingly legit “Verizon 4G LTE” logo along with its moniker, you’ll notice a rather obnoxiously-planted “Verizon” logo on its home button — perhaps a bit too ridiculous to be the real deal. That said, it’s almost certain that the Note II will officially make it to Verizon, no matter if it’s dressed like the photos above or not; this purported variant lines up nicely with screenshots leaked earlier this week showing AT&T and Verizon compatibility. Now, if only we could have further confirmation — perhaps in the way of a second visit to the FCC in the near feature or some leaky memos.

[Thanks, Sean P.]

Motorola Droid RAZR M Review

The Motorola Droid RAZR M was just made available to the public, so it’s time for a review. We have played with the device since its official launch in New York last week. The overall idea of this device is to provide a compact form factor, and a relatively “large” screen (4.3″) at the same time. Of course such as size isn’t that big these days as it is possible to find 5.5″ smartphones, but again, Motorola has other phones like the Droid RAZR Maxx HD to address that market, so let’s review this phone for what it is: a push towards super-thin bezels, high-quality display and large battery capacity (2000mAh). This sounds very nice on the paper, but is it so rosy in the real world? Let’s see…

Apple, carrier stores open at 8AM on September 21st for iPhone 5 sales, early pre-order tallies are ‘incredible’

Apple, carrier stores open at 8AM on September 21st for iPhone 5 sales, early preorder tallies are 'incredible'

Apple regularly likes to kickstart major launches with early retail openings, and it’s just confirmed that the natural order of things is intact: both its own stores as well as those for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will open at 8AM local time on September 21st to take iPhone 5 sales from anyone who missed out on the pre-order rush. As for how well those pre-orders have gone so far? Apple’s statement on the subject doesn’t give us concrete numbers at this stage, but it certainly hints at an upbeat outlook:

“Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible,” said Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris. “We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response.”

Verizon Ruined Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus Again [Google Wallet]

Verizon is screwing with Google Wallet again. After originally just saying it wouldn’t officially support it at all, it relented a little bit and allowed it onto the Galaxy Nexus last month. And now it’s called take-backs, apparently. More »

Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access

Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access

Verizon has never totally been on the Google Wallet bandwagon. First, Big Red refused to support the mobile payment system, citing a lack of secure hardware. Months later, folks managed to gain official access through the Play Store, but it looks like that the VZW GNex is, once again, Wallet-free. Word on the web has it that those Nexus owners are now, upon opening the app, greeted by a message saying that their version of Google Wallet is no longer supported, and that they need to update the app. Problem is, the Play Store is telling folks that their devices are no longer supported. We’ve confirmed the issue ourselves, but we don’t know if this a temporary problem, or if it’s a permanent move. We’ve reached out to both Google and Verizon for comment, and we’ll let you know as soon as we hear back.

[Thanks, Tim]
