FCC approves Verizon’s $3.9 billion spectrum purchase

The executives at Verizon are likely jumping for joy today, as the FCC has approved the company’s planned spectrum acquisition. Verizon will be purchasing spectrum licenses from SprectrumCo, which is a joint venture between a number of big cable companies, including Comcast and Time Warner. It’s paying a lot of money for access to that AWS spectrum as well, as the total price comes in at a whopping $3.9 billion.

Naturally, Verizon plans to use this freshly-acquired spectrum to expand its 4G services, but now that it has acquired the spectrum it wanted, it will be licensing out its lower A and B block spectrum to other companies. One of the companies that will licensing spectrum from Verizon is T-Mobile, which plans a roll out of 4G LTE for early 2013. In a statement, it was pretty easy to tell that Verizon president and CEO Dan Mead was eager to begin utilizing this new spectrum. “This purchase represents a milestone in the industry and we appreciate the FCC’s diligent work to review and approve the transaction,” he said. “We will work aggressively to ensure that we put this previously unused spectrum to use quickly to benefit customers.”

We’ve known about Verizon’s plan to buy up this unused spectrum since December, when it first noted it was interested in striking the deal. Given the number of companies involved the deal and the amount of money changing hands, the FCC had to become involved to make sure everything checked out. The FCC obviously doesn’t have the problem with the deal, announcing that Verizon has the green light to go ahead with the purchase today.

So, not only does this deal help Verizon greatly, but it will also help out other carriers and their customers. Verizon’s 4G LTE network already covers 75% of the United States, but with this new sale, Verizon will be able to give that a boost. Here’s hoping that Verizon begins its roll out as quickly as Mead’s comments suggest. Stay tuned, folks.

Verizon to sell Windows 8-powered Nokia Oyj phone in 2012

Verizon logoWhat do we have here? Word has it that Verizon Wireless, one of the big four carriers in the US, has penciled plans to sell a new smartphone from Nokia Oyj (with Oyj basically meaning “Inc.” in Finnish)which will run on the Windows 8 operating system. If this were to be true, then it would be the first time since Verizon has rolled out a Windows-powered device since May last year. It must be noted that both Microsoft (who has just unveiled a new logo by the way) and Nokia intend to hold a press conference this coming September 5th in New York to in order to discuss Nokia’s Lumia brand of Windows Phone-powered devices.

Verizon has not been mentioned at all to be part of the event, but that has not stopped the mobile carrier from introducing a Nokia phone later in the year, although it must be noted that these plans are private. So far, officials at Verizon, Microsoft and Nokia have all failed to respond to such rumors, leading us to believe that it might just be true.

Verizon’s LG Optimus Vu could be the Intuition

LG’s reply to the Samsung Galaxy Note when it came to the phablet market was in the form of the LG Optimus Vu, offering all 5″ of viewing goodness to boot. Well, we do know that the LG Optimus Vu is making its way to the circles of Verizon Wireless, and there are some anonymous tipsters who have spoken to the folks over at Droid-Life, (hence the watermark in the images above) touting that Verizon will rename the LG Optimus Vu by calling it the “4G LTE Intuition by LG”. Seriously, does a piece of hardware like a phablet need such an obnoxiously long name? You could have just called it the LG Intuition without the 4G LTE suffix, and the world would have moved on nicely (and I would have had to type less words). It seems that the LG Intuition will retail for $199.99 on contract, but if you want to pick it up sans contract, then it will cost you $549.99 a pop. Those rocking to Verizon can look forward to a phablet from LG in due time.

Verizon Droid Incredible 2 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaked

Just like the HTC Thunderbolt which we talked about earlier this morning concerning an unofficial Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leak, here we are with a leaked ROM of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Droid Incredible 2 from Verizon Wireless, where HTC Sense 3.6 will also be thrown into the mix. Installing this leaked ROM will see your Android version bumped up to 4.0.4, although there are no promises that nothing will go awry with your smartphone. I suppose you do know the potential dangers of installing an unverified ROM on your smartphone – it might just end up bricking it.

Needless to say, it makes perfect and good sense to perform a backup of your Droid Incredible 2 beforehand, just in case Murphy decides to strike and wipe out all data on your device. There is a chance of installing the leaked ICS ROM without the need for a firmware update, although there are no guarantees that you can boot it up or get the other stuff working perfectly fine.

HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs

HTC Thunderbolt, Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs

Looks like some HTC oldies are in store for Android OS goodies — unofficially. Though Verizon’s yet to publicly confirm availability, it does appear Droid Incredible 2 and Thunderbolt owners (like this sorry bastard) are in store for a very real Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. Two deodexed ROMs based on purported stock 4.0.4 builds have recently hit the forums treating eager and, in the case of that latter LTE handset, beleaguered users to a host of performance tweaks, as well as that Sense 3.6 skin. It should go without saying that you’ll need to be rooted to flash either leak and, as always, the usual warnings apply: backup first and proceed at your own risk. That said, consider this your ticket past the Big Red tape.

LG Optimus Vu to bow on Verizon as the Intuition, stylus not included?

LG Optimus Vu to bow on Verizon as the Intuition, stylus not included

Could this 5-inch LG handset be Verizon’s answer to the Galaxy Note? Our Intuition tells us otherwise (get it?), but that screenshot above and corresponding FCC docs deign to differ. Really though, that lady razor name’s the purported new moniker for Big Red’s rebranded Optimus Vu: the heretofore Korea-only phablet we recently reviewed. While we found the outsized handset’s worth as a true S-Pen rival hampered by its lack of a digitizer and 4:3 aspect ratio, it could catch on with folks eager for a 7-inch tablet alternative. However this one eventually shakes down in the crowded Android marketplace, it appears subs are in store for a 4G LTE ride and the carrier’s typical $199 on two-year contract pricing. Curiously, the leak makes no mention of an included stylus, so perhaps the operator’s opting to spin this one as a more traditional smartphone release. Smart move, that.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 22, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday, folks. This particular hump day saw news that the Department of Justice and the FBI have brought down a trio of websites that dealt in pirated Android apps, while a picture of a mini dock USB cable for the iPhone 5 surfaced as well. Microsoft announced a number of things related to the Xbox 360 today, kicking off a search for people to beta test its new dashboard update, permanently dropping the price of the Kinect by $40, and announcing Xbox 360 Essentials packs, which come packed with accessories to accommodate Xbox 360 owners.

The FTC has ended its investigation of Facebook’s Instagram purchase, though the FTC wrapped things up rather silently. LG has a massive new 4K HDTV available now in South Korea, HP posted less-than-stellar results for quarter 3 of its fiscal year, and today NASA talked about how the Curiosity rover has been getting around on the surface of Mars. Today also brought some new sample shots of the Nikon CoolPix S800c Android camera, along with a new video demo for the device.

We got a closer look at the Archos Gen10 XS tablet line today, and the struggling HTC is planning to cut the price on its One series of phones after the line posted disappointing sales. T-Mobile announced that it will begin offering nationwide unlimited 4G next month, while Rockstar delivered a new round of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots today, and we have a feeling that move screenshots are coming sometime later this week, so keep an eye out for those.

AT&T has reiterated its decision to block FaceTime, and cited an FCC ruling in support of it. Verizon looks be gearing up to offer a Nokia Windows Phone 8 later this year, and sadly, Nintendo confirmed that Nintendo Power magazine will be shutting down in December. NASA has kicked off a simulation meant to test landing on a near-Earth asteroid, and there’s a new iPhone app on the scene that will help you determine which Super PACs are putting out those constant political ads. Black Isle Studios appears to have risen from the dead, but no one seems to know the circumstances surrounding the re-opening.

Finally tonight, we have a review of the new Archos 101 XS tablet by Chris Burns. Enjoy the rest of your evening, everyone!

Verizon Wireless tipped to offer Windows 8 smartphones this year

Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system has been struggling to compete against the iPhone and Android devices. Microsoft and Nokia have teamed up for a line of Windows Phone smartphones that the duo hopes will help push the adoption of Microsoft’s operating system and Nokia smartphones across the global markets. A source claiming knowledge of the matter says that Verizon intends to sell a Nokia smartphone running Windows 8 software this year.

Bloomberg reports that both Microsoft and Nokia will be holding a joint press conference on September 5 in New York City to discuss Nokia’s Windows phone line. However, the source says that Verizon isn’t expected to be part of that event. However, the carrier will rollout a Nokia smartphone later. The move makes sense for Verizon as the company looks for alternatives to the iPhone, so it can reduce dependence on Apple devices for the bottom line.

The Microsoft and Nokia press conference on September 5 is only days before the widely expected September 12 unveiled for the next-generation iPhone. It’s been over a year since Verizon offered shoppers a Windows Phone. The last time Verizon had a Windows Phone was the HTC Trophy, which was never a top seller.

Microsoft and Verizon have a shaky history. Microsoft’s ill-fated Kin line of smartphones landed at Verizon stores and were discontinued only two months later after abysmal sales. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system is expected to launch alongside Windows 8 for computers. Launch of Windows 8 for computers and tablets is expected in October.

Nokia Windows Phone 8 devices said to arrive on Verizon this year

Nokia Windows Phone 8 devices said to arrive on Verizon this year

We knew the date, we’re even pretty sure that Nokia will be outing new hardware. What wasn’t confirmed, however, was which carriers would be involved. If reports from Bloomberg are to be believed, we can expect Verizon to be one of them, and pretty soon too. Nokia has been a little more friendly with AT&T and T-Mobile, but this speculation could mean we see the first Windows Phone on Big Red since the middle of last year. Naturally we’ll still have to wait and see exactly what pans out and when, but for now, the Verizon faithful (or contractually obliged) with Windows Phone yearnings, have a little glimmer of hope.
