AT&T has been upping its 4G LTE game recently and today it announced that the service is being made available to 14 new markets. This brings the total of markets where AT&T 4G LTE is avaialble to 175, meaning that the carrier now has the second largest LTE coverage net in the U.S. More than 170 million people are now covered by AT&T 4G LTE and the carrier expects to cover 300 million people by the end of 2014. The 14 new markets include:

  • Beaumont, TX
  • Binghamton, NY
  • Carbondale-Marion, IL
  • Fort Pierce, FL
  • Fort Smith, AR
  • Fresno, CA
  • Houma, LA
  • Jefferson City, MO

  • Montgomery, AL
  • Mount Vernon, WA
  • Palm Coast, FL
  • Temple-Killeen, TX

Verizon is providing 4G LTE is the most markets right now, 486 to be exact, covering 273 million people. On the other hand, T-Mobile has recently announced their 4G LTE service that has currently been made available in only 7 markets. AT&T has also been heavily investing to improve user experience, as evident from the new cell cites it plans to erect in downtown San Francisco. The battle for 4G LTE supremacy in the US gets a little more interesting.

Verizon Puts Vodafone Acquisition Rumors To Rest

Verizon Puts Vodafone Acquisition Rumors To Rest

It was rumored earlier that Verizon was teaming up with AT&T to acquire Vodafone, which is the second largest mobile carrier in the entire world. The deal was reportedly worth over $245 billion dollars. As rumors were circulating, Vodafone shares jumped over 6% but came down 3.4% when the carrier formally announced that is no plans of buying out Vodafone, either on its own or with a second bidding partner, who in this case with rumored to be AT&T. Reportedly, the deal was going to give Verizon the 45% stake that Vodafone has in its U.S. operations back, whereas all operations outside of the U.S. would have been AT&T’s taking.

The alleged deal has now been officially denied in regulatory filing that Verizon made today. The carrier saying that it would be a willing purchaser for the 45% stake Vodafone has in Verizon Wireless, though it does not currently have any plans of merging with or making an offer for Vodafone either on its own or with a partner. Maybe they’ll think about acquiring Vodafone somewhere down the road or maybe they’ll not. Speculation ends, for now.

Casio G’z0ne Commando reboots with 4G LTE

The Casio G’z0ne Commando has been a rather quiet option on Verizon’s network, but for those wanting a rugged and tough smartphone on Big Red’s network, the Commando is a very safe bet. It’s even a better option now because a new version of the phone was seen making its way through the FCC, equipped with Verizon’s blazingly-fast 4G LTE.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-02-at-10.59.59-AM-540x422

Formally called the Casio G’z0ne Commando 811, the new handset comes with an all-new look on top of the brand new LTE chip. Of course, it’s not the most beautiful phone to look at, but if it’s protection from rain, dust, drops, etc. that you’re looking for. the Commando 811 may be the phone for you.

It’s very similar to our recently-reviewed Kyocera Torque, only this newer version is getting a bigger screen, a front-facing camera, and possibly an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean based on the new navigation-key arrangement at the bottom of the device. And of course, it’s got the black and red color scheme that Verizon is notorious for on its Android handsets.

Nothing is official yet, but we should be hearing from Verizon and Casio with an official announcement sometime soon. It just cleared from the FCC, so it should only be a matter of time before those that need a viable option for a rugged smartphone equipped with LTE will be able to grab the Commando 811 from Big Red.

LG Lucid2 coming to Verizon April for $tkk,

The original LG Lucid came to Verizon just a little over a year ago as a midrange device, and today we got word that its sequel, the Lucid2 (VS870), is now ready to show up in similar capacity. Said to be Big Red’s version of the LG Optimus F5, the device is aimed at the first-time smartphone buyer and is available online for free (with a two-year commitment) beginning April 4th, while retail availability will be in the coming weeks. Among its boasted features are a Starter Mode with a simplified UI — much like what we’ve seen on Pantech phones recently — as well as a 5MP rear camera, 4.3-inch qHD IPS display, 2,460mAh battery, Android 4.1.2, unspecified 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage. Note: The press release gives two online availability dates (today and April 4th) but LG has confirmed to us that the former is simply a typo.

Verizon and AT&T tipped for joint Vodafone bid [UPDATE]

If you thought yesterday’s April Fool’s Day mess of rumors was hard to swallow, you’re really going to have a difficult time with this tip: Verizon and AT&T have been reported to be jointly buying Vodafone. This absolutely wild possibility comes from The Financial Time’s Alphaville where they’ve got what they say are “usually reliable people” suggesting a “breakup bid” for Vodafone between AT&T and Verizon. It’s also been said that such a purchase would include a 40% premium on Vodafone’s current stock price, this giving the company an enterprise value of right around $245 billion USD.

vodafone_nano_sim_2-580x311

If such a deal would be made, it’d be the single largest M&A value (Mergers & Acquisitions, that is) of all time. The previous holder of said record was the AOL takeover of Time Warner back in 2000, that deal racking up a cool $182 billion USD. The same source speaking with Alphaville has suggested that Barclays US is working out the possibilities for a potential transaction, the current deal being the following.

“Barclays US has been tasked with putting together the potential transaction, the usually reliable people claim. The basic idea would be that Verizon buys Vodafone’s 45 per cent stake in their Verizon Wireless joint venture while AT&T takes the non-US assets.” – Alphaville

Other than this basic set of notes and some analysis, it would appear that there’s been no evidence that these companies will actually go through with said deal. We’ll continue to keep our eye on the situation and you’ll know as soon as we know – stay tuned to SlashGear for more!

UPDATE: An update from Dealreporter (through Alphaville) says that Verizon “is not involved in a reported bid for UK telecom company Vodafone.” Of course their note also comes from “a person familiar with the matter” as no representation from any of the three companies supposedly involved has yet come forward with a statement.

Have a peek at the timeline below for additional puzzle pieces leading to today’s oddity and let us know if you have any insight you’d like to lend!

Verizon completes acquisition of Mohave Wireless

While it may not be as big of an acquisition between T-Mobile and MetroPCS, Verizon announced today that its acquisition with regional carrier Mohave Wireless is now complete. The Mohave, Arizona-based wireless carrier (hence the name), is now in the hands of Verizon, and Big Red now has 100% control and ownership of the smaller carrier, buying them from Frontier Communications and Rio Virgin.

verizon1-580x325

The acquisition will expand Verizon’s coverage in northwest Arizona, a region of the US that doesn’t get much coverage in the first place (because, you know, it’s out in the desert). Mohave’s operations cover a population of just over 200,000. 3G data will be available, with Verizon’s blazingly-fast 4G LTE rolling out sometime in the near future.

For the time being, Mohave customers won’t be affected until the Verizon network transformation is complete in early 2014. At that point, Verizon will begin to transfer Mohave customers over the Verizon’s network. Again, this only affects those in northeast Arizona who are currently with Mohave Wireless.

It turns out that Verizon has already invested over $80 billion since the company began to increase the coverage of its network around the US, and it looks like it’s paying off. Big Red has the largest 4G LTE network in the US right now, with 486 markets that have Verizon’s LTE, and it covers almost 90% of the US population, according to Verizon.

HTC Droid DNA Appears Again On Verizon Website

HTC Droid DNA Appears Again On Verizon WebsiteIt seems that the HTC Droid DNA simply loves to play hide and seek, as it was as recent as a couple of days ago that Verizon’s website no longer depicted the HTC Droid DNA, with sales representative of the mobile carrier citing the reason behind that is simple – the HTC Droid DNA has been “retired”, because of an upcoming device, which many folks have deemed it to be the HTC One, which is the latest flagship smartphone from the Taiwanese company.

Well, no sooner than that, it seems that the HTC Droid DNA has returned back to the site, showing that there are available units for purchase. GottaBeMobile claims that the SKU has changed though, which points to a slightly altered unit. The thing is, the hardware specifications listed did not seem to go through any kind of changes, so what gives? Could this be due to a restocking issue that was resolved soon enough that hardly enough people noticed? Perhaps this means the HTC One will not be making its way over to Verizon. What do you think?

LG Lucid 2 To Launch This April 4th On Verizon?

LG Lucid 2 To Launch This April 4th On Verizon? Some folks have said that they would not touch the original LG Lucid with a 10-foot pole, which goes to say a whole lot about what kind of smartphone it is. Well, the LG Lucid 2, as its name suggests, would be a sequel to that particular smartphone, where it is more or less a modified LG Optimus F5 that throws in its fair share of modifications and changes. It seems that the launch date of the LG Lucid 2 has been postponed, and true to the adage that it is better to be late than never, whispers have it that the LG Lucid 2 will be launching later this coming Thursday, April 4th, on Verizon Wireless.

There were a couple of allegedly leaked photos of the LG Lucid 2 that proved at least one major change made to the LG Optimus F5, which is its battery that will sport 2,460mAh of capacity instead of the original 2,150mAh cell. LG is touted to ship the LG Lucid 2 with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box, so there is no need to wait for an updated version of the operating system.
