Chromebook Pixel with LTE to ship by April 8th

Chromebook Pixel LTE ship date

For those that can swing a Chromebook Pixel in the first place, the LTE model may be the wisest choice when it promises always-on data for a constantly connected machine. Anyone who can justify the $1,449 outlay will be happy to know that Google has quietly narrowed down the launch window: early orders should now ship by April 8th. Shoppers will still have to be Americans willing to latch on to Verizon’s network for LTE, but the date leaves a mere two weeks before the release of what’s unquestionably the highest-end (and priciest) Chrome OS system yet. Any takers?

Verizon Messages extends unified SMS and MMS to Android, iOS and the web (video)

Verizon Messages extends SMS and MMS to Android, iOS and the web video

As you begin juggling more and more devices in your daily life, running all of your text and picture messages through your smartphone can become a real chore. To help subscribers keep up with the times, Verizon Wireless has introduced a unified messaging solution known as Verizon Messages, and unlike services like Google Voice, it works through your primary number. The free service is accessible via Android smartphones and tablets, iOS tablets (but not the iPhone) and an online web app, which keeps all messages in sync and stored in the cloud for up to 90 days. As another nice touch, the app offers an auto-reply feature for times when you need to disconnect, and it also allows you to archive messages to an SD card. You’ll need to enable the service within your Verizon account, but for a peek of the new Verizon Messages, just hop the break for a video tour.

Redbox Instant app for Xbox 360 goes live for Gold subscribers

Redbox Instant app on Xbox

We knew that Redbox Instant would be coming to Xbox 360, it was specifically betrayed by a leak way back in November and the company has been pretty up front about the planned support. Now the app is available through Xbox Live, delivering its streaming library to millions of Microsoft gamers. The $8 a month service just became available to the public during the last week. If you’re curious, but not quite ready to add another subscription to your life, Xbox Live Gold customers can enjoy a free trial of 4,600 unlimited streaming titles (though the 4,000-plus movies available for purchase or rent will still set you back a few more bucks). To try it out yourself hit up the Xbox Live Marketplace, where you’ll also find the newly launched GameTrailers app.

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update incoming for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus, rollout to begin ‘in phases’ today

Android 422 Jelly Bean update incoming for Verizon's Galaxy Nexus, rollout to begin 'in phases' today

Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus is largely considered to be the (Big) Redheaded stepchild of the Nexus line, lagging behind its purebred bretheren in the update department. But the delays are getting shorter and, as the carrier’s just confirmed, users should begin to see Android 4.2.2 rolling out to their handsets as early as today. Initially released back in February, this Jelly Bean update brings with it the ability to snap 360-degree photospheres, various camera UI improvements (i.e., filters and borders), lockscreen widgets and a Swype-like Gesture keyboard. It’s set to be released gradually, so don’t despair if that OTA update notification takes a few days to make itself known.

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Update Announced For Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Update Announced For Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Good news today for Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners. Verizon has announced that it will be rolling out Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update for its Galaxy Nexus. This particular Android version was announced by Google in October last year and its roll out began in November. It has taken Verizon approximately five months to bring this update for their Galaxy Nexus users. Starting today the Android 4.2.2 update will be rolled out in phases to Verizon Galaxy Nexus users.

Android 4.2.2 has a number of new features. The camera app has been greatly improved and allows improved customization of pictures. Users can take beautiful 360 degree panoramas with Photosphere. The highlight of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean has to be the new Gesture Keyboard. It offers a new and improved typing experience, all users have to do to type a word is to slide their finger from letter to letter. Users also have the option of placing widgets on the lock screen, thus allowing easy access to essential apps such as Calendar and Gmail. Verizon Galaxy Nexus users will no doubt be overjoyed with this news, who doesn’t love a new software update?

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2.2 update rolling out today

We’ve known for several weeks that Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus would be updated to the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but today the news is official, and Verizon has announced that the rollout will begin today. Verizon has noted that they’ll be rolling out the update “in phases,” so you may not get the update right away.

The update includes a slew of new features, including Photosphere, which is a camera feature that allows you to take 360-degree panoramic pictures. You can also take advantage of new tools in the camera app in order to add filters, borders, and other photo-customization options. There’s also a new gesture keyboard that comes with the update, allowing for Swype-like typing.

We were first hinted at an Android 4.2.2 update for the Galaxy Nexus last month, when GSM versions the device were receiving the update over the air, but no official announcement was made yet. Then later on, we were able to snag an unofficial version of the update for Verizon’s model of the device. However, it looks like the carrier is finally pushing out the update to all.

The Galaxy Nexus is one of Google’s many Nexus devices that released in late 2011 as the successor of the Nexus S, but it was eventually succeeded by the Nexus 4, the company’s latest Nexus handset. The Galaxy Nexus was manufactured by Samsung, and while most Nexus devices are branded as Google products, the Galaxy Nexus was one of the few Nexus devices to be branded as a Samsung product.

Verizon to update the Droid 4 with Jelly Bean 4.1 starting tomorrow

Verizon to update the Droid 4 with Jelly Bean 4.1 starting tomorrow

It’s always a good day when we can report on older handsets getting updated with some fresher software. If you happen to have bought the Droid 4 when it came out on Verizon last year, then today’s your lucky today: the carrier has confirmed it will begin updating the phone to Android Jelly Bean (4.1) starting tomorrow. As always, this is more of a rollout than anything else, so try and stay patient if your phone doesn’t immediately show an update prompt. And as ever, do hit us back and let us know how the upgrade goes.

HTC One Verizon release in question as Tweets disappear

This week the HTC One has been once again teased for release on the 4G LTE-toting Verizon network here in the United States. Whoever is behind the wheel on the HTC Twitter account has more than once replied to users across the USA saying that they have no plans to release the HTC One on Verizon Wireless – though quickly after replying in more than one case, these tweets have disappeared entirely.

weletyouknowok

According to the LA Times there was a tweet (one you can see below) directing users to a page about the DROID DNA in stead of an HTC One showing on the big red network. Another tweet made just a few minutes ago includes talk of no Verizon release for the HTC One with a bit of a disclaimer – “we’ll let you know” if there’s going to be a release in the future.

htcs-tweet

We’ve heard ourselves that the Verizon HTC One would be a reality in coming months – our source is one we trust, and we’ve seen another trusted source speaking on the matter as well, saying also that Verizon would carry the device. This release is also being tipped to be odd for Verizon in the way it’ll be conducted: without Verizon changes to the name or the hardware.

Normally when a device such as the HTC J Butterfly heads to Verizon, it’s re-named and re-branded. The Butterfly became the DROID DNA (see our full review). With the HTC One series, Verizon brought fourth the DROID Incredible 4G LTE (see our full review). Here with the HTC One, we’re still confident in our source saying the HTC One will be revealed as the HTC One a short period after the rest of the top four networks in the USA have their releases individually.

Have a peek at the hands-on action we’ve got with the HTC One below and be sure to check our full HTC One review for the full run-down. It’s a winner for sure!
