Verizon HTC Droid DNA Receives Update To Improve Connectivity & More

The HTC Droid DNA released this past November, and we liked it for its ability to offer a full HD screen experience right in the palm of your hand. It did have a few issues, but Verizon is planning to roll out an update for the device that will hopefully help with its growing pains.

Verizon published a blog post earlier today where they promise to update the HTC Droid DNA that will have its users benefitting from both better connectivity of its hotspot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections and additional functions. The 2.04.605.2 710RD update will also correct time stamps for incoming texts and feature an enhanced Recent Apps functionality as well as better audio quality for wired headsets.

The update should be available for HTC Droid DNA owners, which you can initiate the update process by going to Settings > Software Update > Status on your device. Hopefully there’s enough in the update to help you forget that you’re still running Android 4.1 while Android 4.2 is rolling out on other devices today.

Verizon details Droid DNA update, hints at menu key software option

Despite our love for the Droid DNA, it has a few flaws that are hard to ignore. Perhaps most vexing is the lack of an option to map the contextual menu button to the recent apps key. Fortunately, we’re now hopeful that Verizon will remedy the situation. Big Red just posted an overview of a forthcoming software update, and among the line items, it’s said that users can expect “enhanced recent apps functionality.” As you can see, the wording is frustratingly vague and open to interpretation, but the fix is logical and would follow precedent from HTC. Other changes are more clearly spelled out, such as improved WiFi and hotspot connectivity, better audio quality when using a wired headset and correct timestamps for incoming messages. Verizon awarded #1 in customer care by JD Power

Verizon has once again earned top-slot for customer care and service, according to JD Power and Associates. This marks the carrier’s fourth year straight as #1, something it isn’t showing any signs of letting go of in the near future. The status is based on ample amounts of feedback and surveys, with online, telephone, and in-person customers all being considered.

jd_power

JD Power and Associates determines its results based on feedback from a variety of customers, as well as information provided on surveys. Using both, a score is given for each carrier, with 1000 being the maximum. Verizon clocked in at 766, narrowly beating AT&T, which had 759. Verizon received the Power Circle Rating of 5, while AT&T received 3.

Sprint came in next at 746 with a Power Circle Rating of 3, likewise placing it just a bit under its nearest competitor. Then, with a relatively large drop, there’s T-Mobile, which scored 715, and received a Power Circle Rating of 2. All of these fall under the full service list, which includes a non-contract section for prepaid carriers.

In the non-contract section, MetroPCS came out on top at 733 with a Power Rating of 5, while Virgin Mobile came in just under that at 729 with a Power Circle Rating of 5 as well. Third place is the popular prepaid service Tracfone at a solid 700/3, followed closely by Boost Mobile and Straight Talk. At the bottom of the list lies Cricket, with a score of 671/2, and Net10, with a score of 633/2.

Verizon Might Get HTC M7 After All

Verizon Might Get HTC M7 After AllWe did talk about how Verizon will be the last among the four major mobile carriers in the US to receive the HTC M7, and perhaps this is due to their commitment to the HTC Droid DNA which has proven to be one of the best smartphones from HTC to date, and recently, we have word that the HTC M7 might not be carried in Verizon stores so soon because the Droid DNA is still relatively new to the market. Heck, the rumor mill added more items to the menu that requires more salt with word that there might just be a Droid DNA+ in tow instead of the HTC M7.

Well, what can we make of it so far? Developer and HTC insider LlabTooFeR did tweet that the Droid DNA+ will share more or less similar hardware specifications as the HTC M7, albeit that it will come with a microSD memory card slot that was missing on the original Droid DNA. Which boggles the mind, as LlabTooFeR touted their sources that the M7 on other carriers will lack a microSD memory card slot. So, will the HTC M7 arrive on Verizon Wireless eventually, considering the rather close, for the lack of a better word, DNA shared between it and the Droid DNA+?

HTC Thunderbolt Gets Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update

HTC Thunderbolt Gets Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich UpdateSo, you own a HTC Thunderbolt, which holds the distinction of being the first LTE-enabled smartphone from HTC over at Verizon Wireless, and for the longest time, you have been disappointed with hopes of seeing it progress from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to a more recent version of the Android operating system. Well, we are glad to say that all of that will come to an end right about now, as Verizon has announced that they have already begun to introduce the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update in stages to HTC Thunderbolt owners rocking to Verizon Wireless.

There will be a bunch of features thrown into the new update, including Face Unlock which ensures you are able to unlock your device using nothing but your face thanks to face recognition technology, all without the need for typing. Makes me wonder if it works as well by holding up a picture of your mug in front of the Thunderbolt. Anyone care to confirm?

Other than that, there is also a new Usage Center that helps you keep track of your amount of data usage from different apps, where you can then set warning levels, check app usage or even opt to turn off data completely. Check out the support page for the Ice Cream Sandwich update here for more details.

Redbox Instant coming to Xbox 360 as console launch exclusive in the ‘very near future’

Redbox Instant coming to Xbox 360 as console exclusive

Are you an Xbox 360 owner? You might like this bit of news: according to Major Nelson, Redbox Instant is coming sometime to the gaming machine in the “very near future,” and Microsoft appears to have partnered with the video streaming service to become a console launch exclusive. It’ll be available only to users who are Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Of course, this doesn’t mean this will be the only place you’ll be able to take advantage of all that Redbox will have to offer; the public launch, which is still slated for Q1, will be available on several platforms and devices, such as iOS / Android, Vizio, LG, Samsung and even Google TV. As a refresher, you’ll be able to get unlimited access to the service (as well as four free DVD rentals) for $8 per month, while an extra dollar will let you convert those discs into Blu-ray.

Android 4.0 officially rolls out to HTC Thunderbolt

HTC Thunderbolt

Hades hath frozen over, folks: after nearly two years on the market, Verizon’s very first LTE-capable smartphone, the HTC Thunderbolt, has made the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) with Sense 3.6 in tow. The update, which was first discovered a few days ago, is finally rolling out in phases beginning today. Of course, this also means that many owners may not experience the joys of ICS for yet a few days (or weeks) to come, but it’s at least now officially rocking handsets across the nation. Just in time for many of those users to look into renewing their contracts. Better late than never, we suppose.

Verizon Droid DNA+ Could Be HTC M7 Relative

Verizon Droid DNA+ Could Be HTC M7 RelativeIt was just yesterday when we talked about how US launch partners of the HTC M7 would include AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, with Verizon more or less holding back after the amount of advertising investment that they have put into the Droid DNA. After all, most of what you would find on the HTC M7 (on paper based on existing rumors anyways) would be more or less similar to the Verizon Droid DNA. Here is a leak from Twitter user @LlabTooFeR who claims that this is because Verizon has a new version of the Droid DNA in the pipeline, called the Droid DNA+.

The HTC M7 is said to come with a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, coupled with a 4.7-inch display at 1080p high definition, a 13-megapixel camera at the back, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 2GB RAM, HTC Sense 5.0, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and the Droid DNA+ will be rather similar sporting a 4.7-inch 1080p display, a 13-megapixel rear facing camera and a 2.1-megapixel camera in front, 2GB RAM, Android Jelly Bean, and HTC Sense 5.0, with LTE connectivity expected to be thrown into the mix, too.

Droid RAZR M ‘blue steel edition’ now available at Best Buy

Droid Razr M

What’s black and white and pink all over? Well, not too long ago, the answer to that was the Droid RAZR M. As of today, however, Motorola’s nearly bezel-less Jelly Bean handset will also be pretty in platinum. Available as a special edition for Best Buy, the Verizon-locked device has been given a steely makeover, but that’s not to say the M’s been scrubbed of all its flair. Turn the phone on its side and you’ll note its hardware keys now pop with a blue hue. Apart from the cosmetic overhaul, not much else on the 4.3-inch device has changed. So, if you’re still game for a solid Android mid-ranger, you can snag this freshly embellished phone for $50 on a two-year contract at the source below.

Leaked specs suggest updated DROID DNA or M7 for Verizon

Well this is interesting: Twitter user @LlabTooFeR has posted a list of specs for an allegedly incoming HTC device with a codename of DLXPLUS. Those who were following rumors before the reveal of the DROID DNA will recognize the “DLX” part of that codename, as it’s what the device was called before it was officially announced by HTC. So, this new list of specs suggests that an enhanced version of the DROID DNA is on the way.

shine-580x390

HTC has done the same thing before with the One X, so it wouldn’t be all that shocking to see it do something similar with the DROID DNA. As Droid Life points out, however, this may not have anything to do with the DROID DNA. Instead, it could be Verizon’s version of the rumored (and at least semi-confirmed) HTC M7, considering that it sports similar specs.

According to @LlabTooFeR’s information, this new device will come packing a 4.7-inch screen displaying at 1080p and it will be running a 1.7GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 under the hood. That processor will be accompanied by 2GB of RAM, with the DLXPLUS sporting a 13MP rear-facing camera. We also see that the DLXPLUS will come with 16GB of internal storage, Jelly Bean, Sense 5, and a microSD slot – something the original DROID DNA was famously missing.

DLXPLUS

Aside from the screen, which has shrunk by 0.3-inches, this would offer a number of improvements over the DROID DNA. On the other hand, these specs are quite similar to what we’ve been hearing about the HTC M7, so it’s possible that these leaked specs confirm the device for Verizon. We’ll just have to wait and see if HTC announces anything in the coming days and weeks, but to be frank about it, the suspense is killing us.
