Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile to offer BlackBerry 10 devices

RIM’s BlackBerry 10 platform will feature on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile USA, all three US carriers have confirmed, with each of the networks publicly stating that they will be offering smartphones running the new OS. The new line-up, set to be officially revealed come January 30, with at least two new models demonstrated at the time.

“We’re hopeful its going to be a good device,” Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said at CES this week, Reuters reports. “We’ll carry it.”

AT&T, meanwhile, were slightly more cagey, though did indicate that BlackBerry 10 would be offered if only to keep them competitive among upgraders. “It’s logical to expect our current [BlackBerry] customers will have the best BlackBerry devices to choose from in the future” CMO David Christopher suggested.

As for T-Mobile USA, CEO John Legere was the most enthusiastic of the three. “We’re extremely optimistic that it’s going to be a successful product” the chief exec insisted, saying that “our business customers are extremely interested in it.”

The announcement follows similar votes of confidence in BlackBerry 10 by all of the key UK carriers last month, including confirmation that 4G models would be broadly available.

Nokia Lumia 822 Coming In Red

vzw lumia 822 red Nokia Lumia 822 Coming In RedSure, the holiday season might be over, and wearing red might not be the hottest color at parties, but this does not mean you cannot be prepared for this coming Valentine’s Day. In fact, Verizon Wireless is said to be preparing the world to usher in February 14th with a couple of released devices that will come in (hopefully) a more desirable color – namely, red. Yes sir, Verizon wants you to paint the town red and up the feeling of love this Valentine’s by making available a couple of limited edition handsets, covering ground with Android and Windows Phone 8 in the form of the Motorola Droid RAZR M and the Nokia Lumia 822, where the former comes in pink, while the latter drips in red. They should arrive in time for Valentine’s Day for under the $50 mark with a 2-year contract if you are interested. Still, I suspect that your girl might prefer a diamond compared to a red or pink smartphone…

Dummy Blackberry 10 Z10 Units With Verizon Branding Spotted Online

T2H6iYXfpbXXXXXXXX 304466611 Dummy Blackberry 10 Z10 Units With Verizon Branding Spotted OnlineAbout a week ago photos of the Blackberry 10 Z10 was spotted with Verizon’s branding on it, suggesting that the Z10 could be making an appearance on Verizon’s network. Now more photos of the device have been spotted on Chinese marketplace, Taobao, although it should be noted that these are dummy units meaning that they will be used to put the phone on display versus the actual device. Dummy units are pretty common and can be spotted in retailers all around the world, giving customers a brief idea of what to expect before the actual unit is given to them to test out, or in some cases it is used as a placeholder for customers to make pre-orders. In any case it looks like these dummy units come with Verizon’s branding as well, and if you like you can actually purchase the dummy unit for yourself via Taobao for $50 although in all honesty your money could be better spent on something else. RIM will be launching the Blackberry 10 platform come 30th of January, and hopefully the announcement of its accompanying devices and supported carriers will be announced as well, but for now it looks like Verizon will be one of them.

Verizon Media Server and IP client hands-on

Verizon Media Server and IP client handson

We caught up with Verizon at the booth and had a chance to spend some time with the new whole-home HD DVR and its clients, we were expecting last year. The VMS1100 media server features six tuners and a 1TB hard drive. You can connect up to five Motorola Medios+ IPC1100 IP-based set-top boxes to it to expand your DVR’s reach to six TVs. Not enough for you? Well, you can actually setup two Media Servers in your house and then scale the system up to 12 TVs. The experience on the clients is nearly identical to that of the TV connected to the server. The whole thing works over IP and with built-in MoCA it’ll run over the existing coax cables in your house. The user interface on the Home Media Server and clients is based on HTML5, which we’re told is why it’s so snappy and switches so quickly between other apps like YouTube and HSN’s Shop By Remote.

What’s odd is that the IPC1100 client has a tuner, but it’s unused. Instead, the client relies on the server’s tuner for live TV. One other unused feature is the server’s ability to transcode. Although, Verizon did seem to intent to leverage this down the road, perhaps to prepare transfers to a portable devices for offline viewing. An exact release date wasn’t something Verizon wanted to talk about, but it’s expected to roll out this year, and presumably it’ll be a staged rollout as we’ve seen in the past. The whole-home DVR is expected to be offered as a premium over the existing offering, but exactly how much more it’ll cost is unknown.

Verizon’s Connected Athlete adds sensors / data to your gear, tracks habits and more (hands-on)

Verizon's Connected Athlete handson

When most people think of Verizon and sports, the company’s NFL Mobile app usually comes to mind. However, this may soon be changing thanks in part to a collaboration between the carrier and Cisco. A project referred to as the “Connected Athlete” will soon allow people to track an athlete’s step-by-step performance in real-time. Here’s how it works: a user’s gear (helmet, shoes and gloves) is outfitted with sets of motion and pressure detecting sensors that track information based on its wearer’s motions. Using Verizon’s wireless network to transmit data, the information is fed to the cloud through Cisco’s 819 Integrated Services Router.

Aside from counting how many steps a running back took in a game, the Connected Athlete may also be able to prevent injuries by tracking an athlete’s performance habits, such as favoring a specific foot over another. The demonstration that Verizon had on hand was connected to a football helmet that would ideally monitor the impact a player absorbed during a collision. If used properly, Verizon hopes that this type of data will help coaches and athletes catch a progressing injury before it happens.

Verizon Partners With Motorola For FiOS TV Media Server Capable Of Six Recordings At Once

[CES 2013] As advanced as our television watching has become recently, one thing cable companies are still lagging behind on is their cable box features. Not every company has something as awesome as Dish Network’s Hopper, and that’s a shame as we all have experienced the torture that is having your DVR notifying you two shows are about to be recorded while you’re watching something really good.

Verizon FiOS is teaming up with Motorola to make a new DVR, called the VMS1100 Media Server, available to its customers later this year that may just be the ultimate DVR. First off, it has one terabyte of hard drive space which means you’ll be able to store up to 100 hours of HD programming. You’ll also be able to use it to watch TV from five separate TVs, record up to six programs at once as well as being able to perform better than previous generation DVRs.

The only downside is you’ll need additional set-top boxes in order to use the media server in additional rooms, which are called the IPC1100 IP-based set-top, which just means that’s more money a month you’ll be throwing at Verizon for rental fees.

So if you could afford all of the extra rental fees for the new Media Server and additional set-top boxes in your home, this new addition may be worth it.

Livestream and Verizon team up to launch Broadcaster with built-in 4G LTE

Livestream and Verizon team up to launch Broadcaster with builtin 4G LTE

The Livestream Broadcaster has been available since May of last year, and while the streaming add-on’s had LTE capabilities since its debut back in April, something like a USB dongle was required to get such internet connectivity. Soon, however, that’s about to change, as Livestream announced today that it’s teamed up with Verizon to offer a new version of the Broadcaster. Essentially, the appropriately named Livestream Broadcaster LTE will boast the same features as the previous revision but with the obvious inclusion of a 4G chip using Verizon’s speedy network. What’s more, the novel unit also replaces the need for AA batteries with one that’s built in, while support for 5.4GHz WiFi can be found aboard the refreshed Broadcaster as well. There’s no specific pricing details (or availability, for that matter) as of yet, but Livestream did tell us we can expect its Broadcaster LTE to ship later in the spring of this year.

Delphi / Verizon’s Vehicle Diagnostics hands-on (video)

We first caught wind of Delphi and Verizon’s new Vehicle Diagnostics service a couple of days back. Today we got to see the thing in action at the Pepcom event here at CES. The hardware is a small black plastic box that should plug into most cars sold in the US after 1996. Once inserted, it communicates wireless with your Android or iOS handset or tablet. The Delphi rep we spoke with started things off by pointing out that it does more than just the diagnostics implied by its name — and that’s certainly the case. There’s a long laundry list of functionality here. He certainly had a lot to talk about.

On a base-level, we’re talking geo-fences, performance alerts and map tracking — it can also mimic key functionality, so you can lock / unlock and remotely start up the engine if your vehicle supports such things. As we said, there’s a long list of functionality here — pretty impressive all in all. In fact, the Connected Car Service app takes a bit of getting used to, due to all the features. We’ll let the Delphi rep take you through it the app after the break.
