Vertu Smartphone With Android Not Confirmed Just Yet

vertu rumor Vertu Smartphone With Android Not Confirmed Just YetElizabeth Kranz, an Assistant Account Executive for Sharp Communications, Inc. who happens to have Vertu as one of their clients, has reached out to us after we commented on the very real possibility of a new Android-powered Vertu luxury phone that is set to hit the market sometime this year.

Here’s what Ms. Kranz had to say about the situation, “Thank you for your interest in Vertu’s upcoming product releases. We are unable to confirm any new product details at this time. However, Vertu has recently referenced a ‘strong product road map’ and we can confirm that we will be making an official announcement to the global media on the 12th February. The announcement will mark the beginning of a series of international events held by Vertu, starting in our home market, London, England.”

Well, I guess all we need to do now is to wait for a couple of weeks more before knowing more about the situation as the official details look set to break a couple of days before Valentine’s.

Vertu Constellation Ti Leaked

ti Vertu Constellation Ti LeakedIt was just yesterday when we wrote to you about the possibility of an Android smartphone from luxury mobile phones manufacturer Vertu. The source of the rumor was Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin who claims to possess knowledge of Vertu’s jump to the Android train. But new reports today could prove Murtazin’s claim to be true. Blog of Mobile posted an image of what it claims to be an Android-powered Vertu phone called “Ti.” Having a “RM-828V” model number, the purported Vertu Ti will reportedly run Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, will be powered by a 1.5GHz processor, and will support Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Android-powered Vertu Constellation Ti leaked all over, just needs a diamond-studded price tag (updated)

Androidpowered Vertu Ti RM828V

Shortly after the latest rumor that Vertu’s prepping its first-ever Android-based device, eagle-eyed Blog of Mobile delivered further evidence to support the claim, and it even managed to dig out what it claims to be product shots of said phone. First of all, the name “Ti” and model number “RM-828V” are spotted across Bluetooth SIG, GLBenchmark and telecom regulator databases in Singapore and Macau. Having scanned through these pages we now know that the Ti will come with Android 4.0.4, an 800 x 480 display, a 1.5GHz processor, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Blog of Mobile added that it’s a Snapdragon MSM8260A SoC with WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100 radio, accompanied by a rather lame 1,250mAh battery. Bluetooth SIG’s page provided the following design description of the device:

“VERTU Ti possesses the classic Vertu design DNA and characteristics – strong, unique & distinctive. The design and craftsmanship positions VERTU Ti alongside other iconic products in the luxury market.”

If the above images are authentic then the Ti does indeed maintain the classic Vertu look. The only real changes we can see so far are the three new physical keys — presumably “Back,” “Home” and “Recent apps” for Android. If all goes well, we should see this wallet-busting gadget at MWC next month, so start saving up now.

Update: Russian retailer spblux.ru lists four variants of the Ti or, as the site calls it, the Constellation Ti: “Titanium Black PVD black leather,” “Titanium Black Alligator,” “Red Gold Mixed Metal” and “Titanium Black Leather.” Interestingly, the red gold version has a search button instead of “Recent apps,” but we guess that was an earlier design. Regardless, we have all four designs after the break for your viewing pleasure. [Thanks, Roman K.]

Murtazin: next Vertu blingphone will run Android, stoop to Rolex-style pricing

Murtazin next Vertu blingphone will run Android, stoop to a Rolexstyle price

Our favorite Russian blogger, who’s admittedly often wrong on a few little things, says he has the low-down on a new Vertu smartphone coming in February. It’d be the first release since Nokia sold the luxury brand to a private equity firm last year, and Eldar Murtazin claims the rumored switch from Symbian to Android is definitely a go-er. He also reckons the handset will cost around $4,000, which is loose change compared to some previous Vertus — like the $27k model shown above. There are no further details to report, aside from a fleeting reference to the legacy of Nokia’s 8800 slider, so don’t go converting your Swiss francs just yet.

Vertu Android-Powered Smartphone Not Cheap At All

vertu android Vertu Android Powered Smartphone Not Cheap At AllWe all know that Vertu does come up with their fair share of stunning handsets which could lean closer toward being works of art compared to an actual smartphone, and here we are with whispers that Vertu will be working on their most affordable Android-powered smartphone to date. The asking price is still nothing to sneeze at, as we are looking at a sticker tag that is worth €3,000. It seems that Nokia, after selling most of their stakes in Vertu last year, might have a say in the upcoming Vertu handset that runs on the Android operating system.

The new owner, or rather, the majority stakes owner of Vertu did promise to “drive the development of the luxury mobile phone category through significant investments”, where among them would include rolling out new devices. This Vertu-branded Android smartphone might debut next month, but all of it remains hush hush at this point in time, and we do hope that it will maintain a sleek look without being gaudy in nature.

Nokia finishes offloading Vertu, rumors claim Vertu plans a matching switch to Android

Vertu Constellation Quest in gold

Nokia has ended one of the more significant chapters in its tumultuous history: the Finnish phone giant has finished divesting Vertu to private equity firm EQT VI, shedding direct control of the definitive luxury phone brand. The formal switch lets Nokia keep a 10 percent stake and move 1,000 staffers to the newly independent company. Where Vertu goes next may be more intriguing, however. There’s no official word on any change of direction, but that hasn’t stopped tipsters from claiming to TechCrunch that there’s a big shakeup ahead. Supposedly, former Nokia VP Anssi Vanjoki will finally get the phone maker CEO position he’s been looking for through a Vertu spot, and he won’t simply follow in his former employer’s footsteps — upcoming Vertu phones may use Android, not Windows Phone. While it’s a very unconfirmed rumor, a switch-up wouldn’t be completely surprising when Vertu is still an all-Symbian house that needs more than just a few extra jewels to stay relevant.

Vertu Constellation Neon and Blue series announced

I know that not many people are able to afford diamond studded luxury handsets, but then again, neither do the majority own a Ferrari in their respective garages. This has not stopped luxury handset manufacturer Vertu from churning out new models from time to time, where we will take a look at the Vertu Constellation Neon and Blue series today. The new Constellation Neon series will run on the Nokia Belle operating system, using the Nokia C7 as its base, which is not too different from all its predecessors from the Constellation range. Hmmm, 2010 technology in 2012 is not too hot, Vertu.

As for the Constellation Blue handset, what is underneath the chassis will more or less be identical to the Vertu Constellation Quest, and that handset was announced nearly a couple of years ago. To put it in a nutshell, it is an over-glorified Nokia E6. Count us out, although we do wonder who has more money than sense to pick up either.

Chinese Servant Gets 10 Years In Jail For Stealing Overpriced Nokia Vertu Handset

Image (1) vertu_2-620x620.jpg for post 148503

Here’s a sad, and slightly ridiculous, coda to the story of Vertu, Nokia’s wrong turn into making bling-tastic handsets encrusted with diamonds and gold: a servant in China convicted of stealing one from her boss has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 20,000 yuan (over $3,000).

The story, as published in the English edition of the Chinese People’s Daily Online, notes that Ms Zhang Yun’s defense was that she had not realized the value of the phone when she took it, and did so in the first place because she had not been paid. The incident happened in Henan Province.

“I didn’t know the cell phone was so expensive,” she had told the court, according to the article. “I don’t know anything about the law and I thought the cell phone was only worth one or two thousand yuan to make up for my salary.”

In fact, the phone was a silver edition and was worth 68,000 yuan ($10,000) — an absurd sum of money for a mobile handset anywhere, and even more so in a country with a per capita income of $7,600 (compare that to the U.S. where the per capita GDP is over $47,000).

Crazy prices, in essence, was one of the problems with hallmarks of the whole Vertu project to begin with: Nokia is a business built on massive volumes of handsets, and the move into smaller-scale, higher-margin luxury editions, coupled with concierge services for those who bought them, ran counter to that. It’s just my opinion, but I wonder if Nokia mis-called the whole concept of status in mobile handsets: a top-of-the-line device like an iPhone or the newest Galaxy S III, or even the Lumia 900, is status enough for most people, and if they insist on something shiny, there are replaceable covers for that. Update: Some readers believe that Vertu was actually very successful among its target audience for Vertu. Nokia has never talked about how profitable Vertu was.

So when push came to shove and Nokia began to think of ways it could quickly restructure in the face of growing losses in its main handset business, Vertu was an obvious candidate for the chop. A 90 percent stake in the company is now being sold to private equity firm EQT for around €200 million; Nokia for now is holding on to the remaining 10 percent.

Back in China, a lot of people are up in arms over the severity of the sentence and fine — and they are taking to sites like Sina Weibo to discuss it. It’s hit a nerve perhaps because it plays up on the long-standing, still-central idea of class struggle in the country: “catering to the rich while turning its back on the poor” is a typical comment.

The People’s Daily notes that the court has defended its action, saying that the fine is proportionate to the value of the device. People are now rallying around Ms Zhang to offer free legal support for an appeal.

Ms Zhang said that she had intended to give the phone back to her boss when he had paid up what he owed her. In the meantime she’d buried it in a turnip pit (yes, the silver Vertu went into a turnip pit) and had intended to use it herself — a fact that was discovered on the surveillance cameras that the household had installed on its property (sounds like a great boss, huh?). Ms Zhang had only been working for the household for just over 40 days when this happened back in December 2011.

Update: Another reader in the comments below notes that the sentence has been overturned by the higher court. I’m looking for a source for that development.
