Yahoo And Vevo Partner Up For Original Music Programming

Yahoo And Vevo Partner Up For Original Music ProgrammingIt is safe to say that in terms of videos on the internet, YouTube is the king and is pretty much everyone’s go-to website when they want to search for videos. This is despite alternatives out there such as Daily Motion and Vimeo, both of whom offer similar video hosting services, but we guess given YouTube’s reputation and how long it has been established, it would be hard to knock them off their spot.

However that’s not spotting companies such as Yahoo from trying. According to reports, Yahoo has recently struck up a new deal with Vevo, which for those unfamiliar, is a joint effort between the Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, two of the largest record labels in the world at the moment.

Vevo has a ton of videos on YouTube but apparently they are trying to lose their dependency on YouTube where the terms and conditions of its use is pretty much subject to the whims of its parent company, Google. Now Yahoo and Vevo have worked together in the past on Yahoo Music, but apparently this move is expected to bring its videos and even original music programming to Yahoo Screen.

We have heard of Yahoo’s ambitions to acquire high-end original programming so it is possible that by working with Vevo, it’s one of the ways Yahoo will be able to bring additional original video content onto its website. Will Yahoo and Vevo’s partnership help to draw more users onto Yahoo Screen? We guess we will have to wait and see, but in the meantime what do you guys think?

Chromecast Gets Ten New Content Partners

Chromecast Gets Ten New Content Partners

Google wants to give you another reason, in fact, ten reasons to buy its $35 HDMI dongle. Chromecast was launched earlier this year, its a simple HDMI dongle that can be attached to the back of a display. Once connected to a Wi-Fi network, users can stream a wide variety of content to the display through the nifty little device. Ten new content partners for Chromecast have been announced today, which greatly improve the content offering, given the fact that the device launched with only a couple of partners. Netflix was actually its biggest launch partner.

The new content partners include PostTV, Discovery Communications’ Revision 3, Red Bull.TV, Songze, BeyondPod, Avia, Plex, RealPlayer Cloud and popular music video streaming service VEVO. They join the existing partners Pandora, Hulu Plus, HBO Go and Netflix. Streaming from Google’s very own YouTube has already been supported from the get go. Apart from all of these partners, the Chromecast is also able to stream content purchased from the Google Play Store and the Google Play Music store. The dongle got off to a good start when it was released earlier this year, it actually sold out within 24 hours. While the company hasn’t said how many units it has managed to sell since then, it has acknowledged that demand for the dongle had been underestimated.

Official Vevo App For Samsung Smart TVs And Blu-ray Players Launched

Official Vevo App For Samsung Smart TVs And Blu ray Players Launched

It is no secret that Vevo has been working quite hard to transition from web browsers and mobile apps to other mediums. The go-to music destination for millions of people around the world seeks to expand its reach beyond these two mediums and it has found the answer in internet connected TVs. Only recently the Vevo app for Apple TV was launched, which puts the music service on millions of TVs around the world. It has now launched the official app for Samsung smart TVs and blu-ray players, to further bolster its entry into living rooms.

The Vevo app for Samsung smart TVs and blu-ray players is available from today. It will give users access to Vevo’s massive library of music videos from more than 25,000 global artists. Users will also have access to concerts and original shows. Vevo says that the experience has been tailored for Samsung’s devices and easy viewing. It is only compatible with those TVs or blu-ray players that were either released this year or last year. There will be no need to sign up for a Vevo account in order to use the app. Users are allowed to create playlists of up to seven music videos without needing an account. At this point in time, the app is available in select markets, including the U.S., UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and more.

Vevo Will Block YouTube Offline Viewing

Vevo Will Block YouTube Offline Viewing

It has already been revealed that a YouTube mobile app update will bring offline viewing functionality in November. Only yesterday more details about this feature emerged, users will be allowed to store videos on their devices for 48 hours, they can be viewed anytime within that window without needing an internet connection. Once the 48 hour window is up, the device must be connected to the internet again if the user wants to view those videos. Vevo, one of the biggest content providers on YouTube, will block the offline viewing feature for its videos.

A Vevo spokeswoman confirmed to Variety that “We’re not going to allow viewing of our music videos or other programming in offline mode.” She reportedly didn’t elaborate on what has compelled Vevo to make this decision. It is possible that under the licensing agreements that Vevo has with music labels, it might not be allowed to offer downloaded versions of the music videos. Vevo has licensing deals with UMG, EMI Music, CBS Interactive Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Hollywood Records and others. A memo was leaked yesterday which Google has apparently sent to its partners, the company allows them to opt out of offline viewing if they so wish.

Vevo opts out of offline video on YouTube’s mobile apps

When YouTube’s offline viewing feature launches in November, don’t expect to find Vevo on board. According to Variety, the music video service has opted out of the functionality, which will let users download videos on Youtube mobile apps for up to 48 hours of offline playback. YouTube reportedly gave Vevo and other partners a chance to opt out of the upcoming feature, so — while Vevo is the site’s biggest content supplier — this news is hardly scandalous. It makes sense, too; the music video provider has its own apps to promote, after all.

Apple TV update brings apps for Disney, the Smithsonian, Vevo and The Weather Channel

Apple TV update brings Disney, Smithsonian, Vevo and Weather channel apps

Rumors that Apple was about to expand the Apple TV’s channel selection have just come true — the company has quietly rolled out apps for the Disney Channel, Disney XD, the Smithsonian, Vevo and The Weather Channel. The new portals deliver the on-demand video you’d expect from their respective services. There are live components, however: Vevo fans get non-stop music videos through Vevo TV, while The Weather Channel jumps to live broadcasts during major storms. Any locally supported channels should appear the next time you use your Apple TV, although you’ll need to be a qualifying cable or satellite subscriber to run the Disney apps.

Apple TV Gets Vevo Music Videos, Disney And Disney XD, The Weather Channel And Smithsonian Content

Apple continues its selective content partner rollout today with an update to Apple TV software that adds Vevo, as previously rumored, as well as Disney Channel, Disney XD, The Weather Channel and Smithsonian via new dedicated apps, as 9to5Mac reports. All those content providers are live in the U.S., but U.K. users and other regions will see only select channels via update.

The Apple TV update actually marks the first time that Apple has provided weather information on the Apple TV, something which now seems like a long overdue addition to the platform. With that addition, the Apple TV starts to take on more of a general services dashboard tone, in addition to its video and entertainment content sources.

Vevo was rumored to have been preparing a dedicated Apple TV application last week, the Wall Street Journal reported, which is part of its efforts to distribute content from its network more widely outside of YouTube, which currently powers a huge share of its views through a licensing agreement between the music industry joint venture and Google.

Disney content appearing on Apple TV via dedicated channels is also something that isn’t all that surprising, considering the cozy relationship that exists between Disney and the Mac maker. Disney CEO Bob Iger sits on Apple’s board, and Steve Jobs famously sold computer animation studio Pixar to Disney. Disney has been a strong, longtime partner for the iTunes media store, as well.

Apple building out content relationships for Apple TV seems to be the way the company prefers to welcome third-party material to the platform, rather than via opening up an API and providing an application store as it has done on iOS. The new partnerships today could help boost the device’s appeal among the teen set, as well as with younger kids thanks to Disney and Disney XD, and overall more content sources = a wider potential audience, but Apple clearly wants to make sure that new content sources also fit with its overall vision for a home media streaming device.

Rumors of a dedicated Apple television, or of a new next-gen media streamer launching later this year continue to swirl, so a staged content buildup could have something to do with those plans, too.

VEVO Channel Reportedly Launching On Apple TV Later This Week

VEVO Channel Reportedly Launching On Apple TV Later This Week

VEVO has become the go-to service for watching music videos from over 25,000 global artists. It also offers original content now. The service is quite popular with music lovers. Recently we reported that VEVO iOS app had been updated with full AirPlay support, allowing users to beam music videos to their television set through an Apple TV. There has been chatter lately that VEVO might be added as a separate channel in Apple TV, and if Wall Street Journal’s latest report turns out to be true, the channel might be added within this week. Users would then be able to watch videos on VEVO straight through the Apple TV, they wouldn’t need an iOS app to beam videos to their TVs.

The report also claims that VEVO will be added as an app on Samsung smart TVs as well, but that is expected to happen after a few weeks. VEVO’s library contains over 70,000 videos from major record labels such as Sony and Universal. Being able to reach viewers on mediums other than YouTube, where majority of the users watch videos uploaded by VEVO, is likely to boost its ad revenue. Google reportedly keeps as much as 50 percent of the ad revenue generated through YouTube. VEVO is expected to serve ads on both the Apple TV and Samsung smart TVs, it would presumably receive a much larger cut as opposed to the one it receives from the world’s biggest video streaming website.

WSJ: Vevo TV deal signed for Samsung, Apple TV platforms

Internet music video provider Vevo launched its linear channel on mobile devices, Xbox 360 and Roku back in March, and according to the Wall Street Journal, it may arrive on the PS3, Apple TV (directly, AirPlay support came last week) and Samsung’s Smart TV soon. After a rumor earlier this month from AdAge, the new report indicates deals with both Samsung and Apple are signed with a launch on the latter possible this week. That most of the people watching the streaming channel do so on TV-connected devices which, along with the desire to sell higher-priced TV ads is apparently behind the new push. The next moves for Vevo? Rolling out new channels that focus on specific genres or live music, renegotiating licenses for content, and off in the distance, perhaps a cable TV channel. For now, we’ll just pencil in a shift to reality TV shows, dramas and other non-music programming for 2019 or so.
