APC Paper puts $99 Android PC in a recycled book

Android in a cardboard case and with a sub-$100 price tag: that’s what VIA is offering with Paper, a novel (excuse the pun) take on the cloud-computer and prototyping platform trend. The book-shaped system, clads a new version of VIA’s Cortex A9-based APC ‘board, named Rock – complete with an optimized copy of Android 4.0 – in a recycled cardboard chassis, hooking up to a TV or monitor for web browsing, document editing, gaming, and more.

The Rock APC ‘board itself has 4GB of flash storage and 512MB of DDR3 memory, along with hardware-accelerated graphics and video outputting through HDMI and VGA sockets at up to 1080p HD resolution. The A9 WonderMedia chip runs at 800MHz, and there’s a microSD slot for extra storage.

Ports include two USB 2.0 and a microUSB OTG, as well as a 10/100 ethernet, audio in/out, and a variety of header pins on board for extra connectivity. It’s worth noting that while Rock has a VGA output, the version in the Paper computer doesn’t.

Ice Cream Sandwich has been specially fettled to play nicely with USB keyboards and other peripherals, and all of the open-source software, documentation, pin-out guides, and other information is available here. APC Paper will go on sale in March, priced at $99, while APC Rock – the ‘board alone – is available now, priced at $79.

Now he’s working with VIA Motors, which today introduced a line of electric vehicles of a rather different scale. The V-TRUX line of big boy toys includes modified GMC trucks, SUVs and vans, customized to include a Volt-like powertrain that enables up to 40 miles of electricity-only driving before switching over to the onboard 4.8 liter V8. More details after the break.

VIA EPIA-P910 stuffs 3D display support, quad-core into a Pico-ITX size

VIA EPIAP910 stuffs 3D display support, quadcore into a PicoITX size

If there’s been a race in the Pico-ITX realm to catch up to full-size PCs, VIA just leapt ahead by a few bounds with the EPIA-P910. The tiny PC mates one of VIA’s 1GHz QuadCore E-Series processors with a VX11H media core to handle the kinds of tasks that would break just about any other system its size: stereoscopic 3D displays and DirectX 11 3D graphics are entirely within the realm of possibility. Likewise, there’s a surprising amount of expansion headroom compared to many of the P910’s similarly small counterparts, such as the 8GB RAM ceiling and support for both HDMI 1.4a and USB 3.0. You’ll need to get in touch with VIA if you want to find out how much it costs to work the new EPIA into an embedded PC, and it’s more likely to be headed to corporate buyers than to homebrew projects. We’re still looking forward to the shot of visual adrenaline, whether it’s in a mini PC or a store display.

VIA unveils first quad core pico-ITX mainboard supporting 3-D displays

VIA has announced an interesting new pico-ITX mainboard. This little mainboard is very compact at 10 cm x 7.2 cm and is the first to offer a quad-core processor and support 3-D display capability. The little board is called the VIA EPIA-P910 Pico-ITX Board and uses the VIA VX11H MSP and the VIA QuadCore E-series processor.

This is the first board from the company to use the VX11H MSP, which provides advances in graphics capability, including support for DirectX 11. The display hardware on the board also supports rich textures and 3-D stereoscopic displays. The QuadCore E-Series processor operates at 1 GHz, and the board promises high-performance computing in a very small and power miserly design.

Despite its small size, the little board has impressive connectivity options. It offers HD audio, HDMI out, VGA out, and a LVDS display connector. The board also has a high-performance hardware HD video decoder called the VIA Chromotion 5.0 video processor. The little board supports up to 8 GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory.

The board also features pin headers and an expansion board-to-board connector that provides support for the addition of six more USB 2.0 ports, an LPC connector, SMBus connector, PS/2 port, audio ports, and more. Integrated back panel connectivity options include HDMI 1.4a, VGA, dual USB 3.0 ports, and a gigabit LAN port. Pricing and availability for the little board are unknown.
