Viber Working To Bring Their App To BlackBerry 10

Viber Working To Bring Their App To BlackBerry 10Viber, for those unfamiliar, is an app that allows users to call one another for free and send instant messages as well. The app is available on a variety of platforms except for BlackBerry 10. This was confirmed back in 2013 where Viber stated that they had no plans to support BlackBerry 10 anytime soon.

Well the good news is that it looks like Viber could be having a change of heart. This is thanks to a recent tweet by Viber in which they respond to a customer’s enquiry as to whether Viber would be arriving on BlackBerry. Viber responded by saying, “We are working with BB on a solution that will allow us to bring Viber to BB10. Please follow us for updates coming soon!”  (more…)

Viber Acquired By Rakuten For $900 Million

Viber Acquired By Rakuten For $900 MillionFor those unfamiliar with the Japanese market, Rakuten is basically Japan’s answer to Amazon, which by its implication would suggest that the company is pretty huge and a force to be reckoned with in terms of online services in Japan. Now according to a press release from Rakuten, they have announced that they will be acquiring Viber for a whopping $900 million. According to Rakuten’s chairman and CEO, Hiroshi Mikitani, “I am tremendously excited to welcome Viber to the Rakuten family. Viber delivers the most consistently high quality and convenient messaging and VoIP experience available.”

Viber’s CEO, Talmon Marco, sounded just as pleased by the acquisition, saying, “Sharing similar aspirations with Rakuten, our vision is to be the world’s No.1 communications platform and our combination with Rakuten is an important step in that direction.” Viber is thought by many to be a rival to Skype in terms of providing free VoIP calls on mobile devices. The platform boasts over 300 million users worldwide which was instrumental in helping to draw the attention of Rakuten. While Rakuten might be a name familiar in Japan, the company hopes that with the acquisition of Viber, they will be able to expand beyond Japan’s borders and we can’t wait to see what the company will do with their latest acquisition.

    Viber For Windows 8 Released

Viber For Windows 8 ReleasedIt was slightly more than a week ago when we brought you word on how Viber offers phone call capability now, and here we are with word that Viber for Windows 8 has rolled out. Just a little bit of history lesson before we continue – Viber first rolled out on the desktop back in May earlier this year, offering support for the PC and Mac platforms. This time around, the offer has been extended to those of you who use Windows 8 as the operating system of choice, where it comes complete with features that are special to the operating system.

In Viber for Windows 8, one is able to pin conversations directly to the Start screen, snap Viber over to the side of the screen by taking advantage of Snap View, as well as look for Viber contacts through the use of the universal search charm. Just like all of the other Viber versions that are currently available, Windows 8 users, too, are able to perform a quick switch between desktop and mobile with but a single touch of a button. Viber CEO and founder Talmon Marco shared, “This is the natural next step for Viber following our support for Windows Phone 8, bringing a fully compatible and custom designed version of Viber to Microsoft’s touch-friendly OS. Windows 8 is an exciting platform to develop for, and brings a whole new set of UI elements and unique functionality to Viber for the first time. We are excited to support Viber users on Windows 8 and this is part of our commitment to wide, cross platform availability.” [Press Release]

Viber Offers Phone Call Capability Now

Viber Offers Phone Call Capability NowViber made some waves in the news earlier this year after it was hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army, but that seems to be such a long time ago now. This time around, we bring you good tidings concerning Viber, where users would definitely love the latest feature – being able to make calls to any mobile or landline number. This will be made available to those who download and install version 4.1 of the app on either the iOS or Android platform. This new service is known as Viber Out, where its most recent “public appearance”, so to speak, was after the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, so that those users who were affected by the typhoon were able to place calls to their families.

Glad to know that it has rolled out to everyone under far more peaceful circumstances, delivering yet another affordable alternative when it comes to VoIP calling. We do wonder just how will Microsoft respond in due time, and will they improve their Skype Out service which Viber Out looks well poised to be a major rival in this department? Viber Out intends to be an extremely easy to use system, where it will connect itself to your phone number, while recipients are able to identify your call.

Viber To Land On Trio Of Nokia Asha Phones

Viber To Land On Trio Of Nokia Asha PhonesI am quite sure that any smartphone user worth his or her salt would have heard of Viber before, where it happens to be one of the most popular messaging and social networking apps to date. Well, what happens when you are still rocking to one of those feature phones instead of a modern smartphone with all the relevant bells and whistles to keep you connected at all times? Fret not, as Viber is now available for those who are rocking to the Nokia Asha 308, Asha 310 and Asha 311.

As it stands, there are more than 200 million Viber users worldwide, and with the proliferation of the Asha devices elsewhere in developing countries, you can be sure that the 200 million plus figure is set to go nowhere else up up. With Viber, one is able to send regular messages via the app as well as hold conversations with friends, making it a snap to attach an accompanying photograph, followed by shipping them off over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Not only that, making voice calls using Viber is also a possibility, now how about that? Hopefully we would not see any more hacks by malicious parties any more down the road like what happened earlier this year.

New features have been added, whereas Viber for Android has finally gained tablet support. Users can now use Viber on tablets and smartphones simultaneously.

Viber For BlackBerry 10 Not Coming Anytime Soon

Viber For BlackBerry 10 Not Coming Anytime Soon

It is no secret that BlackBerry 10 is miles behind its competitors in the apps department, and the situation hasn’t drastically improved ever since the platform was first unveiled back in January this year. In June, Viber CEO had said that the official Viber for BlackBerry 10 app would be released alongside the BB OS 10.2 update. He said that both, the app and the update, would be released “hand-in-hand.” Though it looks like Viber had made a U-turn, in response to a user’s query on Twitter, it was revealed through the official Viber Twitter account that there are currently no plans to release a version for BB10.

Back then, Viber CEO Talmon Marco had said that a compatible version was in development, but didn’t exactly say when Viber would release its app for BlackBerry 10. BB OS 10.2 update hasn’t been released as yet for existing BB10 devices, though devices running this firmware are already out in the market, seeing as how the recently announced BlackBerry Z30 ships with BB OS 10.2 pre-installed. Viber tweeted that at this point, “we do not intend to release a version for bb10.” So it can’t be said if Viber will change its mind somewhere down the line. Its competitor, WhatsApp, has released a BlackBerry 10 compatible app. Those BB10 users who want to use Viber, they will have to make do by sideloading an Android version.

Viber support page hacked by Syrian Electronic Army, most user info remains safe

    Viber apps

The Syrian Electronic Army isn’t happy with VoIP app developers as of late — following an attack against Tango last week, the politically motivated hacking group has compromised Viber’s support page. The SEA claims to have downloaded database backups from Viber that include phone numbers, device IDs and push notification tokens. However, the company believes that the attack was largely harmless for regular customers; SEA’s team got access to top-level support systems, but not the all-important user databases. They’re kept in a system that can’t be reached by attacks like these, according to Viber. While that news is reassuring, we’d advise playing it safe by watching for any suspicious account activity.
