Viber For PC And Mac Launched

Viber For PC And Mac LaunchedSmartphone users are probably familiar with the app Viber. For those who aren’t, it’s an app that allows users to make calls via WiFi or mobile internet, and send messages at the same time. Now the good news (?) is that if you’ve always wanted a version of Viber for the desktop, you’re in luck as the company has announced that Viber will be expanding beyond the smartphone and will make its way onto desktops – both PC and Mac platforms. Viber announces new desktop app, revamps Android and iOS versions

Viber announces new desktop app, revamps Android and iOS versions

Along with claiming more than 200 million users worldwide, Viber’s also taking this day to announce what it is referring to as the biggest update to the service yet. For starters, the Viber for Android and iOS applications have both been on the receiving end of a pretty meaningful refresh, following the recent introduction of VoIP calling on older versions of BlackBerry OS. An all-new desktop app will, as of today, also be available to Viber users on a Mac or PC (Linux coming soon, we’re told), packing in most of the features the service is well-known for but in a less-mobile form.

Folks using Viber’s iOS and Android apps will see many changes to the overall user experience in version 3.0, including added support for video messages, a novel voice engine to help improve call quality, the ability to check contacts’ online status and a completely redesigned interface. Meanwhile, the newly minted Viber Desktop features video calling and seamlessly integrates / syncs with the mobile offerings — which makes things like being able to transfer ongoing voice calls between devices possible. While chatting with the company’s CEO, Talmon Marco, he told us development for BlackBerry 10 is in its “advanced stages,” adding that the latest Viber apps were built from the ground up and are all part of the goal to be better than other competing platforms.

Viber exploit lets attackers bypass Android lock screens, for now (video)

Viber exploit lets users bypass Android lock screens, a fix is on the way video

If you’re an Android user who prefers Viber for VoIP and messaging, you may not want to leave your phone unattended in the near future. Bkav Internet Security has discovered an exploit that will bypass the lock screen on Android phones new and old (including the Nexus 4) as long as pop-up notifications are active. While the exact actions vary from phone to phone, all that’s really needed is an incoming message or two, a handful of taps and the back button to reach the home screen. App users can disable the pop-ups as a short-term workaround, although they thankfully won’t have to do that for long when Viber promises that a patch is on the way. There’s only a small chance that a malicious attacker will both get their mitts on your phone and know that you’ve got Viber installed, but we’d advise against using statistical probability as a security measure.

Viber Beta Now Available For Blackberry 7 Devices

Viber Beta Now Available For Blackberry 7 DevicesYesterday we reported that Viber would be bringing its VoIP app support to Blackberry 7, and while the final release has yet to be made available, a beta version of the app is now available for download for Blackberry 7 devices. The official/final version is expected to be released shortly after, so we can assume that if there’s nothing wrong with this beta, we wouldn’t be surprised if the app is released next week or sometime in the very near future. Interestingly, the beta version of Viber is only available for Blackberry OS 5 and OS 7, and if you’re wondering why it skipped OS 6, it seems that there are some “inherent limitations” in Blackberry OS 6 that will not allow the app to work. Strange. In any case if you’d like to check the app out, you can head on over to Viber’s website for the download.

Viber With VoIP Support Still Planned For Blackberry 7 In April

Viber With VoIP Support Still Planned For Blackberry 7 In AprilWhile we’re sure that many developers out there are probably focusing their efforts on creating new apps for the Blackberry 10 platform, this does not mean that developers have forgotten about the older Blackberry 7. Earlier this year, Viber did promise to bring VoIP support to the Viber app for Blackberry 7 device, and given that we’re already in April, we have to wonder if Viber had completely forgotten or if the plans have been scrapped. Well thanks to a reader from Berry Review who reached out to Viber for an answer, the good news is that yes, the VoIP support is still on track and will be released in April. According to what Viber had to say, the release is apparently very close now so hopefully we will be seeing it in the next week or so. In the meantime we will keep our eyes peeled for more information, so check back with us at a later date for the details.

Viber For Windows Phone 8 Submitted To The Windows Phone Store, Could See A Release This Week

Viber For Windows Phone 8 Submitted To The Windows Phone Store, Could See A Release This WeekA couple of weeks ago, we reported that Viber with VOIP enabled would be coming to Windows Phone 8 in the near future, sometime towards the end of March and early April. While the app has yet to make its way into the Windows Phone Store, the good news is that the wait could be coming to an end. According to TruTower, Viber for Windows Phone 8 has been submitted to the Windows Phone Store and is currently awaiting approval, meaning that if everything goes according to plan, it may very well be released sometime later this week. We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for more information on when the app launches, but in the meantime if you happen to chance across it in the Windows Phone Store, do not hesitate to drop a comment or send us an email!

Viber With VOIP Capabilities Arriving On Windows Phone 8 In March/April

Viber With VOIP Capabilities Arriving On Windows Phone 8 In March/AprilFor those unfamiliar with other VOIP apps other than Skype, there is also the popular option of Viber which is available on both iOS and Android. Viber, like Skype, offers VOIP calls and messaging, meaning that if you have WiFi or 3G/4G coverage, you can make calls to other Viber users and not have to spend your minutes or credit if you’re on prepaid. Of course it eats up data but it helps when you’re in a foreign country without roaming or a local SIM card.

Now the good news is that if you have recently made the jump to Windows Phone, or if you have been using Windows Phone for a while, Viber’s CEO has tweeted that the app with VOIP capabilities  will be arriving for Windows Phone 8 either March (this month) or April.

Viber’s CEO then goes on to state that the app has been extensively tested on Nokia’s Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 device, but it should be noted that the app will not be a Nokia exclusive, so rest assured owners of other Windows Phone 8 devices like the HTC 8X. No specific dates were mentioned apart from the rough timeframe given above, but rest assured we will keep our eyes peeled for more information along the way.
