For years now, if you wanted a watch that could survive almost everything up to a nuclear war, Casio’s G-Shock line was your goto timepiece. But Victorinox, maker of the venerable Swiss Army Knife, wants a piece of that market. So it’s just unveiled its Inox line of ‘Tonka-tough’ watches that can seemingly survive any hardship.
Victorinox Announces New Inox Watch
Posted in: Today's ChiliVictorinox Swiss Army has a spanking new timepiece for you to consider if you are currently on the lookout for a new watch. After all, they have introduced a new watch collection at this year’s Baselworld in Switzerland, where the Inox timepiece has been depicted as a rugged companion to last you a lifetime, and each Inox has gone through a hundred toughness tests before it is sold over the counter. Some of these toughness tests are not to be sneezed at, including being run over by a tank, being dropped onto concrete, or exposed to temperature extremes as well as being in the midst of a raging sandstorm for some time.

Short Version
As one of TechCrunch’s resident watch fans, I was intrigued by the Victorinox Dive Master 500, a fairly unique automatic watch that brings the best of the Swiss mechanical along with styling reminiscent of some of the better divers. The build is solid, the 43mm case is well-polished, and the face is very legible. Interestingly, I’d actually recommend this for a fairly adventurous lady who is looking for something a little more rugged – and handsome – than the traditional sport watch.
Long Version
Features:
- Automatic ETA 2892-A2 movement
- Rubber strap
- Comes in four colors
Info:
- Android 4.1
- 1200 x 720, 4.7-inch display
- MSRP: $1,250 (although I found it for $740 elsewhere)
- Product page
The Dive Master 500 is…
… A very cool, very solid automatic divers watch in the vein of a Tissot Seastar or Seiko Orange Monster. Although it’s a bit pricey, it looks great on the wrist of your best gal (or yourself, if you enjoy a smaller case) and is very well-made. Victorinox has long been famous for their knives and I’m pleased to note that this is one of the first watch models that really lives up to the Swiss Army name.
Buy the Dive Master 500 for…
… a picky watch lover who may want something different. While similarly kitted watches can be found for considerably less, the $1,250 MSRP (and $750 street price) of this piece is right on par with others in its class. I wouldn’t normally recommend “Swiss Army” branded watches as I’ve seen too many clunkers in my day, but this is the first one I’m genuinely entranced by.
Because…
… Watch lovers – mainly beginning collectors – will really like it. It’s got some pedigree, it’s got some charm, and it’s very well built. You could get an Orange Monster for much less, but if you’re going Swiss, try this.
Victorinox offers refunds for secure USB drives in light of discontinued software updates
Posted in: Today's ChiliSoftware support and security certificates are coming to an end for Victorinox’s line of secure USB drives, but the firm announced on Facebook that it’s offering customers full refunds until December 31 if they’d like to return their products in light of the developments. In order to avoid losing data, owners of the flash drives should perform a backup before the encryption application meets its untimely end on September 15th. However, files stored on non-encrypted areas of the device will remain accessible without further action. The Slim, Secure and Presentation Master storage sticks can still be used as run-of-the-mill thumb drives after the cut-off date, but the Swiss Army Knife maker’s application will no longer be able to scramble or unscramble their contents.

Victorinox nixes software updates for USB drives, security certificate to expire in September
Posted in: Today's ChiliVictorinox may have offered a hefty bounty to crack its secure USB drives’ encryption, but the storage sticks seem to have met their match another way: the end of software support. In an email sent to customers and a pair of Facebook posts, the firm announced that it will halt updates as of next month and that its security program’s VeriSign certificate is only valid until September 15th. As a result, customers are urged to backup their data lickity split. According to the outfit, the economics of continuing application development just weren’t reasonable and it’ll now refer to a third party for all software. However, the Swiss Army Knife maker isn’t out of the flash drive business — it’s committed to putting more of the devices on the market. We’ve reached out to the company for more details on how the thumb drives will be affected and we’ll update when we get word. In the meantime, hit the source links for the notice or check out the e-mail below.
[Thanks, Scott]
