Skylanders franchise passes $500 million in US retail sales

Activision first published the video game Skylanders in 2011 with Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure. This video game was interesting because it combined typical video game play with real world action figures. The game has a little portal that plugs into the game console via USB.

skylanders-giants1

With that portal connected to the game console, players can take the Skylanders and action figures and set them on the portal to get virtual copies of the action figures into the game to play. Activision has announced that data from research firm NPD Group has shown that sales for the franchise have passed $500 million in the US.

That sales figure includes accessory packs and figures. Activision says that Skylanders have outsold the top action figure lines in the category for the US including Star Wars, WWE, and others. Activision also brags that the latest game in the franchise, Skylanders Giants, made more money in retail sales than the domestic box office sales for top holiday children’s films including Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians.

Skylanders Giants generated $195 million in US sales during 2012. This is an interesting game because not only does it generate sales for the game software and hardware to begin with, it also generates sales with the purchase of additional action figures. The action figures are typically sold in the video game section allowing players to purchase new characters for use in the game and for play in the real world.

Black Ops II was the best-selling game of 2012

Would you be surprised if we told you that Black Ops II was the best-selling game of 2012? No? We weren’t surprised to hear that fact either. I think we all knew that despite the fact that Black Ops II launched late in the year, it would be the biggest game of 2012. NPD group has recently offered up its details on the top games of 2012 confirming our suspicions.

blops2wtmk-w1280-580x3261

The company tracks the top 10 retail games sold in the United States for the entire year of 2012. There are a couple caveats to information offered up by NPD on video game sales including the fact that the company doesn’t track software sold with consoles, used game sales, or digital downloads. The numbers represent only retail boxed copies sold in stores around the country.

As I mentioned, Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the top game of 2012. The second place spot went to Madden NFL 13. The third-place spot went, unsurprisingly, to Halo 4, which is impressive considering it’s an Xbox 360 exclusive. The number four position went to Assassin’s Creed III.

Rounding out the top five was Just Dance 4. Filling out the remainder of the top 10, in order, are NBA 2K13, Borderlands 2, Modern Warfare 3, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, and FIFA Soccer 13. Interestingly, overall sales for the game industry as a whole were down 22% in December, which is traditionally the biggest video game sales month of the year.

Dead Space 3 Downloadable Demo Available on January 22

We have talked a few times about the coming video game from EA and Visceral Games called Dead Space 3. Last time we mentioned the game it was getting voice command support for Microsoft Kinect users. EA has now announced that the downloadable demo for the shooter be available on the Xbox Life Marketplace and the PlayStation Network on January 22, 2013.

The demo will put players into the shoes of Isaac Clarke and his co-op companion Sergeant John Carver. The demo will see players crash land on the planet Tau Volantis. The planet is covered in ice and teeming with Necromorphs. The game promises the same kind of nail-biting action we’re used to seeing in the franchise with a mix of horror, action and suspense.

Dead Space 3 is set to launch on February 5, 2013 in North America on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Xbox 360 gamers can get access to the demo a week early if they sign-up on the official demo website.

Dark Souls 2 announced, destined for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3

Long been the substance of rumors, many a’ gamer’s hopeful speculation has now been confirmed: Dark Souls 2 is official, and it’s heading towards a console near you. The announcement was made at VGA 2012, and a trailer appeared a short while later on YouTube, which has since been removed. Thus far no launch date has been given, but we do know that it will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Software’s Dark Souls is a fantasy RPG, and by the looks of its trailer, the sequel will be just as awesome as the first iteration in the series. The trailer is a pre-rendered low-res video, but it reveals a nice glimpse into the game’s world. Intriguing characters, fiery mountains, dragons, and fatally-wounded characters all make an appearance.

Namco Bandai’s Vice President of Marketing Carlson Choi offered this statement. “Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series. Software is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.”

Intestinal fortitude aside, Dark Souls 2 will present gamers with an “entirely new story” and an expanded world. The sequel will be directed by Tomohiro Shibuya of Monster Hunter fame, and will have the series’ creator Hidetaka Miyazaki overseeing its production. The trailer keeps disappearing as fast as it reappears, so keep your eyes peeled on YouTube, check around, and you’re bound to find a copy before it gets taken down.
