Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag gameplay trailer released

We heard back in February that the next Assassin’s Creed title would be arriving sometime in the future, and earlier this month developer Ubisoft confirmed that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag would be the next installment in the series. Finally, the first gameplay trailer for the game has been released, and it gives gamers an idea of what they’ll be in for.

Assassins-Creed-IV-Black-Flag-trailer-prematurely-leaked1

We saw the official launch trailer earlier when the game was confirmed, but that specific trailer was nothing more than cutscenes. This time around, we get to see actual in-game footage. The trailer features our new assassin, Edward, and his adventures on the high seas. We get to see a lot of action, including some underwater scenes, as well as the expected cannon shootouts with enemy ships.

Of course, we saw some leaked screenshots earlier this month that hint at what to expect from the game, but it’s nice to finally see the game in action. The graphics look pretty great, and the detail is quite outstanding. The underwater scenes look especially good, and we’re guessing those will be a huge hit when the game eventually releases.

The game will launch on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and the Nintendo Wii U on October 29 in the US, with the UK getting it on November 1, and the rest of Europe getting access on October 31. The game will also launch on PS4, but no release date has been determined for that version. Furthermore, if Microsoft ends up announcing its next-generation gaming console at some point this year, we should expect the new Assassin’s Creed installment to be available on that console as well.

Borderlands 2 Diamond Plate Loot Chest Has Both Real and Virtual Rare Drops

The Ultimate Loot Chest pre-order bundle for Borderlands 2 has become a sought after items among fans of the franchise because of the titular container. The remaining units of the bundle are selling for way higher than its original price of $150. Luckily for fans Gearbox has stepped in with another bundle that includes a loot chest.

borderlands 2 diamond plate loot chest

The new Borderlands 2 Diamond Plate Loot Chest doesn’t come with a copy of the game, but it makes up for it with a ton of other goodies, including a replica of the Goliath mask, a code for an in-game Goliath head so your characters can match your new gear, 20 cards with codes for Legendary items, four Wanted posters featuring the playable characters, window decals featuring the weapon manufacturers and of course the sweet loot chest itself.

The bundle will be sold at ThinkGeek, at the Gearbox shop and at Forbidden Planet for $100 (USD) starting June 2013. It’s limited to just 5,000 copies so make sure to keep an eye out for it if you want one. It would’ve been more considerate of Gearbox if they just mass produced the loot chest, but I guess this is better than nothing. As Travis B mentioned in the comments, Gearbox will mass produce this bundle. The only thing that’s unique to the first 5,000 units will be the certificate of authenticity. Thanks for the heads up Travis B!

GameStick announces partnership with Pivos for XBMC integration

We already knew that the GameStick would be supporting XBMC, but PlayJam has announced that they’re partnering up with Pivos to bring the XBMC integration to the portable gaming console. Pivos is an industry player in home entertainment and media products, and PlayJam says that the partnership is good news for both the GameStick and the gamers who will be using it.

gamestick

However, it seems that XBMC will be available on the GameStick right at launch. Previously, it was said that the console wouldn’t be seeing XBMC support until later in September, but it looks like the partnership with Pivos will eradicate the need to wait, allowing gamers and home entertainment junkies access to XMBC right away.

XBMC stands for “Xbox Media Center,” and it was essentially created for the original Xbox, but has sense been released as an open-source media center platform. It’s available on a wide range of devices, and it can run on Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, and iOS. It’s also available on a handful of set-top boxes like the Boxee Box.

Of course, PlayJam says that the GameStick will still primarily be a portable gaming console, but the added functionality of a home theater media center will no doubt attract a larger niche of users, especially at a price of only $79, which comes with the HDMI dongle and a nifty game controller to go along with it. Developer units will begin shipping out very soon, and the console will be available to the public next month.

Hyperkin RetroN 5 Console Announced, Skipping RetroN 4

If you recall, a few weeks back, we mentioned that Hyperkin was working on an update to their popular retro multi-console, the RetroN. Well, today, they officially showed off the console, and it’s been renamed the RetroN 5, since it has five cartridge slots.

Announced at this weekend’s Midwest Gaming Classic, the RetroN 5 made an appearance as both a rendering (shown above), and as a shiny red prototype console, still bearing the RetroN 4 badge, and without the promised GBA slot.

The five-slotted console will be able to play original cartridges from the NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color and Game Boy. In addition, it will offer an HDMI output for playing games on today’s HDTVs, and a special video enhancement circuit to ensure high quality playback at resolutions up to 720p.

The RetroN 5 will also offer technology to improve the audio quality compared to what you’re used to hearing from emulators, with the ability to increase playback frequency if you so choose. While you can play games using the original controllers from the various retro systems, the RetroN 5 will ship with a Bluetooth wireless controller(s?), complete with a lovely clicky microswitch D-Pad.

Hyperkin has also suggested that you’ll be able to use controllers from different systems on each other’s games. For instance, you could play an NES game with a Genesis controller. The system will also have its own custom interface, which will provide the ability to save states, map buttons, and tweak gameplay speed by “overclocking” the game systems. You’ll also be able to assign settings to macro keys on the sides of the controller for easy access. While the menu UI I saw was clearly in the early stages of development, it was already accessible on the prototype system.

Hyperkin hasn’t revealed the pricing or an exact release date for the RetroN 5, but they’re hoping to release the system this July – though they were clear they want to give their development team enough time to put a shiny coat of polish on the finished product, so that date isn’t carved in stone.

Here’s video from today’s announcement for more details on the system.

3D Printed GLaDOS Arm Lamp: Killing You and Lighting Your Home Aren’t Mutually Exclusive

Do you want a sociopathic robot to literally light up your life? Just follow Instructables user Dragonator’s lead and you’ll never feel safe in your own home again! Dragonator built a lamp that looks just like the Portal villainess using 3D printed parts and LEDs. If you’re really reckless, you can even make her move too.

portal glados arm lamp

Dragonator borrowed a couple of UP! 3D printers to complete his project. I’d love to summarize his instructions here, but just from looking at his build I’m sure you can all see that a lot of detailed labor and crafting went into it. As I said, Dragonator originally wanted to make the robotic arm move, but he designed other parts for the lamp in case you just want a lamp. That way you’ll also do away with most of the wiring. And possibly save yourself from being killed by a lamp. Luxo Jr. this is not.

Head to Dragonator’s Instructables page to check out his very detailed walkthrough. He also submitted his lamp to Instructable’s contest – winner gets an UP! 3D printer! – so if you liked his creation – or are deathly afraid of it – vote for him here!

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon Comes to Nintendo 3DS Tomorrow

Nintendo is kicking off its year of Luigi with the announcement that a new video game for the Nintendo 3DS portable console will be launching this weekend. The new game is called Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. The game is a follow-up to the popular 2001 GameCube title Luigi’s Mansion.

luigis mansion dark moon 3ds

Dark Moon will follow Luigi as he explores more mansions and captures more ghosts while searching for even more treasure. The game will see Luigi exploring unique mansions with colorful 3D visuals. Each of the mansions is filled with ghosts that Luigi will capture using his special vacuum cleaner (which he clearly borrowed from the Ghostbusters.)

Players will also be able to take advantage of a number of new unique abilities to complete their missions. The goal is to find missing pieces of the Dark Moon to win the game. Individual missions in the game can be replayed to earn higher scores by collecting more treasure or by losing less health. Nintendo says that almost every object in the rooms of the mansion can be interacted with.

Nintendo plans to launch multiple games featuring Luigi this year as part of its celebration of Mario’s younger brother. You can pre-order Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon over on Amazon for $39.99(USD).

Mario Sculpture Made out of Canned Food: Not One Filled with Cream of Mushroom Soup

Yes we CAN! Most stores stack their food in the same old boring way, but there are some stores or should I say some people, that rise above the status quo and go above and beyond the call of duty – like the guys who set up Canstruction at the SouthCentre Mall in Calgary, Canada.

mario cans
Obviously guys working on this exhibit really love a good game of Mario. Is it wrong that I want to see a Koopa shell knock this awesome sculpture down? Or see Toad’s Kart barrel into it? I hope someone topples this thing at the end of the exhibit. Is that mean? it’s not like the cans aren’t going to go to a good cause when they fall over – with all the canned goods going to the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank.

Anyway, it’s pretty awesome what some geeks can do with a few cans and a dream.

Capcom announces DuckTales Remastered, arriving this summer

Nothing says “nostalgia” like NES platformer DuckTales, the classic 1989 video game based on the animated television series with the same name. You’ll be able to re-live that nostalgia soon, because Capcom just announced that it’s reviving the old game and will be releasing a reboot this summer, called DuckTales Remastered.

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 4.55.47 PM

Capcom announced the news during PAX East today and says that they have signed on WayForward to develop the game. WayForward is best known as the team behind the development of Contra 4. The characters will be hand-drawn, while the world will be rendered in 3D. Plus, Disney’s amazing voice actors will be providing the game’s dialogue.

Overall, Capcom says that the game will play just like the original title, and Capcom’s Rey Jimenez says that the team is “literally pouring our heart and soul into this title.” The trailer above shows off a wealth of gameplay, but the main thing here is that the theme song is coming back, which we’re sure spent a lot of time in that brain of yours as you quietly sang it to yourself at the dinner table.

DuckTales Remastered will be launching this summer on the PlayStation Network (for $14.99), Xbox Live Arcade (for 1200 Microsoft Points), and the Wii U eShop (for $15). Sadly, it doesn’t look like the game will be making its way to Steam, but there’s always the chance that Scrooge McDuck could make his way to the PC eventually.

Rock Band’s last downloadable song will be Don McLean’s “American Pie”

Developer Harmonix announced last month that continued DLC content for Rock Band would be ending in April, and that time is slowly approaching, sadly. The developer has announced the last song to come off the Rock Band DLC assembly line, which will be Don McLean’s 1971 classic “American Pie”. The song will be available for download on April 2.

don-mclean-american-pie

Of course, “American Pie” is one of the greatest songs out there that you can use to signify an ending to something, although my love for 90s rock says that Semisonic’s “Closing Time” is also up there on the list. Either way, Rock Band gamers will be able to sing off the weekly DLC of the game come early next month.

This marks the end to an over 275 consecutive week run consisting of more than 4,000 songs that have been released on Rock Band for gamers to play along with. The song was announced at PAX East during a party hosted by Harmonix. The developer also said that the song they’ll be releasing will be the full 8-minute version.

Harmonix says they have several new titles in development, and they want to start putting more focus on those in the future, which means that they have to give up some of their time and resources from other games, and Rock Band just so happened to get the ax this time around. No further plans for Rock Band have been discussed, but we’re guessing the series will be no more after the ending of the DLC.

Ben Heck: Interview with a Mod God

If you’ve been following Technabob for a while, you know we have mad love for the console modding and hackery of Benjamin Heckendorn (aka “Ben Heck”). So I was thrilled to have the opportunity to sit down and ask Ben some burning questions about modding, custom builds, classic gaming, and pinball.

ben heck

TB: How long have you been doing custom builds and mods? What was your very first casemod or custom build?

Ben: It was the year 2000, and back then I was a graphic artist, and I just wanted a new project to work on for a hobby. I thought about my old Atari games when I was a kid… so I dug up an old Atari 2600… and thought I could make it portable. I made a GeoCities site about my project, and all of a sudden all of this interest came pouring in. I just couldn’t believe people cared so much about those old systems…That’s where it all started.

ben heck atari 2600s

A sampling of Ben Heck’s portable Atari 2600 builds

TB: I know you’ve build countless custom systems over the years. Is there any particular system that stands out as your personal favorite? Why?

Ben: Probably it’s the Atari 800 laptop that I built. The reason that was special for me was that was the computer I had as a kid… I also made a Commodore 64 along the same lines… It’s just kind of great to bring back the memories, and build something cool that also looks like something that would have come from that era.

the atari 800 portable

Ben Heck’s Atari 800 portable

TB: What was the most difficult mod you’ve done? Why?

Ben: The first Xbox 360 laptop that I built. I didn’t really know what I was doing, and I tried a lot of dumb things like water-cooling… That I’ll never try again… That one really kicked my butt, but it got me a new legion of fans, so it was worth it in the end.

TB: On a related note, which system was the most difficult to get inside of without damaging it?

Ben: The Xbox 360 is the most difficult to take apart… All of the PlayStation 3 versions, the Wii and the Wii U are actually quite straightforward to take apart compared to the Xbox (360). The Xbox (360) is like this snap-together ball of frustration. Once you get inside, it’s very standard and computer-like, but its outside is like a hard nougat shell.

ben heck atari xbox 360 laptop

Ben with his Atari 2600 style Xbox 360 laptop

TB: What was the biggest surprise or strangest thing you found when you cracked open a system?

Ben: One of the coolest things… the PlayStation 3 – the second model and the third model – both of them have this sort of wind tunnel cooling system that goes over the CPU and the power supply. That looks like a sort of modern car engine. They even have a label on it that says “Sony Computer Entertainment” on it, like they expect you to see it, maybe.

As far as strangest… it’s always humorous when you find hot glue or masking tape inside of something. It makes you feel not so bad about making your own kludgy fixes.

TB: Do you have a favorite gaming system?

Ben: Of all time… the Nintendo 8-bit was a classic system. I still have one on the TV in my living room. Current gen… I (used to) spend alot of time on my Xbox 360, but nowadays since consoles are ancient, I play on PC.

TB: What’s the craziest modding request you’ve ever received? Did you end up building it?

Ben: An editor from Joystiq wanted an Xbox 360 controller built into his rowing exercise machine handlebar, so he could play UNO while exercising. I actually built that… I welcome crazy requests, because those are really the ones that are interesting to me – and other people too.

TB: I understand that you’ve built a number of gaming and input devices for individuals with disabilities. Can you elaborate on your efforts in this area?

Ben: I build those controllers every so often. The last one I did – Crystal Dynamics contacted me – they had a big Tomb Raider fan who had trouble reaching the shoulder buttons on the top of the controller… People take for granted having two hands to hold a controller, but a lot of people can’t bring their hands together, they can’t move their hands around the sides of the controller, they can only hit the surface buttons, etcetera. So what we did for her, (was a) custom controller where the right bumper, left bumper and two analog triggers were on the face of the controller, where your palms usually go.

ben heck element 14

TB: I know you also love pinball, and have built your own machines. Can you elaborate?

Ben: Right now it’s a very expensive hobby – and even more difficult than expensive. A friend of mine started a new pinball company. He’s making his own games, but I told him about this Ghost Squad game I’m working on that’s pretty far along and asked him if maybe he could build mine too. That way people could play the game that I built, instead of me just building one game. Like a lot of the stuff that I’ve done, it’s a hobby or an experiment that I am trying to turn into a job… or a way to make money.

bill paxton pinball

Ben’s awesomely offbeat Bill Paxton pinball machine

TB: What’s your favorite pinball machine of all time?

Ben: I really like Attack from Mars – I can’t really justify the cost of one these days. That game is getting stupidly expensive. All of the games I’d really like to get are are getting way expensive, like Tales of the Arabian Nights, Medieval Madness or Monster Bash.

TB: Are you doing custom commissions these days? If so, how can readers get in contact if they want a custom build?

Ben: Yes, I’m always doing custom commission work. I have a website, benheck.com, and there are pages re: custom work with an idea of custom prices and what-not. Just don’t ask for Nintendo 64 portables.

Ben Heck will be showing off his Ghost Squad pinball machine at this weekend’s Midwest Gaming Classic in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and also just wrapped up his Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U Ultimate Combo System over on The Ben Heck Show on Element 14. For those of you interested in custom mods, you can check out Ben’s available services, and approximate build and design rates over on his website.
