30 Years Worth of Gaming Products in One Massive Auction: Over 9000-in-1

We’ve featured a handful of videogame collections for sale, but this one takes the cake. eBay member videogames.museum is selling what amounts to uhm, a videogame museum. Hundreds of consoles, thousands of games and hundreds upon hundreds of accessories and promo items.

The collection includes more than 330 consoles, from the Atari 2600 to the current generation consoles and everything in-between, including rare variants as well as obscure flops like the Virtual Boy, the Gizmondo and the Nokia N-Gage. There are also more than 6,850 games; the seller claims that he has completed all the games from some franchises, including Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Castlevania, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Sakura Wars and Super Robot Taisen. There are also controllers, action figures, magazines, strategy guides and countless other stuff.

If you still don’t appreciate just how insane this collection is, videogames.museum has this to say: “I spent the last two months of my life taking pictures and making lists, working about eight hours a day just in order to make an inventory and to figure out what I have. Even now after all the time spent checking things I’m not sure to have included all in the lists…” You can download that list as a pdf file. It is 135 pages long.

Videogames.museum is asking at least $550,000 (USD) for all of these goodies. He may also be persuaded to sell off the items per lot, but he’d really rather sell them as one package. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if he’ll gladly pay anyone who’ll get the N-Gage off his hands. You can check out a lot more pictures of the collection on his Imageshack account.

SimCity hosting another closed beta on February 16

EA and Maxis are gearing up for another closed beta for their upcoming SimCity reboot. The companies hosted the first closed beta late last month, and now they’re going for a second round. The beta will begin at 9 am ET on Saturday, February 16 and will run until 9 am ET on Sunday, February 17. Sign-ups for this second beta close on February 11, so be sure to get your name in ASAP.

Screen-Shot-2012-10-04-at-2.51.35-PM-580x3181

This second beta will feature an “enhanced version” of the one-hour slice of gameplay that was previously featured in the first beta, although we’re not sure what “enhanced” features we’ll be seeing this time around. However, you can bet that gamers will be seeing a bit more this time around, as opposed to what they saw last month.

Furthermore, Maxis also unveiled a new trailer showing off the Limited Edition version of SimCity, and if you pre-order it, you’ll get the Heroes and Villains expansion pack for free. The expansion pack, which is only compatible with the Limited Edition version of the game, allows you to add organized crime and superheroes to your city, so who knows, maybe you’ll create the next Gotham City?

SimCity will officially be released for Windows in North America on March 5 and in Europe on March 7. A Mac version will also be coming to stores as well, but it won’t hit shelves until the spring. Cross-platform play will be supported with the game, so you’ll be able to play against your friends using different platforms.

EA’s Origin gaming distribution service arrives on Mac

Macs weren’t very well known for being gaming machines just a few years ago, but things have changed drastically. More and more developers are bringing their games to OS X, and Valve’s Steam gaming service has been available for Mac for quite some time now. This time around, EA’s own Origin service is ready for Mac gamers.

ea-origin

Origin for Mac was initially announced way back in August 2011, and just went into alpha testing last month, but the platform is finally releasing to the public in all its glory. Origin is almost identical to Valve’s Steam service, in which it allows gamers to buy and download games and demos, as well as chat with friends.

And, just like Steam’s own cross-platform abilities, select EA titles will also be available to play across both Mac and Windows machines, meaning that gamers using both Windows and Mac can purchase a game once and download it for both systems. The game obviously has to be compatible with both platforms, but if so, gamers can play the game on a Windows machine and continue where they left off on a Mac.

EA doesn’t say exactly how many titles in Origin are compatible with Mac, but they mention popular games like Dragon Age 2, Batman: Arkham City, LEGO Harry Potter, and The Sims 3. EA also recommends that gamers be running OS X 10.6.8 or newer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better in order to get a maximum experience with the service.

Ubisoft announces new Assassin’s Creed game

Today during Ubisoft’s post-earnings financial call, company CEO Yves Guillemot announced that the next installment in the Assassin’s Creed series will launch in Ubisoft’s fiscal year 2014, which could be anytime between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014. The game will feature a new protagonist and will be set in a new time period.

However, this next game in the series will take see quite a shift. Guillemot promised that a major leap forward was coming for the Assassin’s Creed series, and he indicated that the game will be developed under a new development team this time around. It’s not said what platforms the game will launch on, but it’s safe to say that it’ll be coming to Microsoft’s and Sony’s respective consoles, possibly even their next-gen consoles.

The latest in the series is Assassin’s Creed III, which was released in late October last year and has shipped more than 12 million copies to date. The game took place during the American Revolutionary War and featured a half-Native American protagonist named Connor. It’ll be interesting to see where the next Assassin’s Creed game will take us.

In addition to the Assassin’s Creed series, Ubisoft also discussed the future of the Far Cry franchise, saying that fans should expect another Far Cry game in the near future, hinting that gamers won’t have to wait as long this time around as opposed to past Far Cry releases, which is definitely a good sign for fans.

OUYA to release new console every year

It looks like the OUYA will see an upgrade each year. At the 2013 DICE Summit, OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman said that they want to follow a strategy similar to the mobile industry, where manufacturers release new phones each year. However, instead of releasing a brand-new console each year, the OUYA will get upgraded components at the same price of $99.

ouya_tweaked_controller-580x4211

Uhrman said that the updated yearly consoles will “take advantage of faster, better processors,” thanks to the decline of component prices every year. However, it seems that the yearly console will get a naming scheme instead of simply remaining the “OUYA.” Uhrman says that each new console will be the “OUYA 2,” OUYA 3,” and so on.

However, Uhrman assures gamers that all games will be compatible with all the consoles, meaning that you don’t have to worry about an older game not working on a newer console. This is certainly great news for gamers, but since the OUYA won’t see a release cycle like all the other gaming consoles, one may worry about futureproofing, and the minute they buy an OUYA, it’ll be obsolete within a year, something that other console gamers don’t need to worry about.

In any case, the OUYA should be a huge it when it release to the public in a few months. In fact, it’s already been a huge hit. The Kickstarter campaign collected almost $8.6 million, absolutely shattering its original goal. This first OUYA comes with a quad-core A9 Tegra 3 clocked at 1.6GHz, so if the company sticks with NVIDIA for future consoles, we could see them move to the Tegra 4 chip that we’ve been hearing a lot about recently.

Xbox 720 rumored to block used games

This may very well be the year of new gaming consoles, folks. Sony has a PlayStation event planned for February 20 where we could finally see the PlayStation 4, and it’s also likely that we’ll hear more about Microsoft’s Xbox 720 at E3 2013 in June. Rumors have already been pouring in, but several new rumors have come in just this morning, including the speculation that the next Xbox may include technology that will block used games from being played.

17_xbox360_gtsNonLiveEnabled_4CPCentered_L-503x500

EDGE Magazine has some juicy details on the Xbox 720, thanks to “sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console.” It’s rumored that the console will require activation codes for games, meaning that used, second-hand games are out of the question and won’t be allowed to play on the new console, meaning that new games that you bought won’t be able to be resold.

While this system could easily be thwarted by just not connecting to the internet on the console, it’s also said that the Xbox 720 will require an always-on connection to the web for just this reason. Having both the activation codes and the internet connection is certainly a great way to prevent piracy, but it may not be completely foolproof, and hackers will no doubt try to find a way around it.

This concept may seem ridiculous, but it’s far from new. Valve’s Steam gaming platform for PC, Mac, and Linux runs in a very similar fashion, where some games require activation codes and are stuck on your account, meaning you can’t trade or sell games that you’ve played through and are done with. Of course, this is all just speculation at this point, but it wouldn’t be absolutely crazy if Microsoft ended up implementing this kind of system in their next console.

Skylanders SWAP Force to Debut Later this Year

If you’re a big fan of the Skylanders video game and collectible toy franchise, Activision has announced a new game is coming this fall. The new game is called Skylanders SWAP Force. The game will feature 16 new characters that will be on display at the Toy Fair 2013 in New York this month.

skylanders1

The coolest feature of the new game in the franchise is that the player can customize the accompanying action figures. Each of the 16 action figures that go along with the new  game has the ability to be separated into top and bottom halves. Those halves can then be interchanged, creating custom action figures with custom powers and abilities. In addition to the 16 swappable characters, the game will feature 16 new Skylanders, and 16 upgraded versions of classic characters.

SWAP Force will see players starting a new adventure in the mysterious Cloudbreak Islands. These islands are the home of a volcano that erupts every 100 years replenishing the magic in the Skylands. The special characters in the game were once blown apart by the volcano and left with special abilities, including the ability to empty your kids’ piggy banks.

The game is expected to be coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U later this year.

Dead Space 3 now available, DLC coming in March

The time has come, folks. The latest installment in the Dead Space series has arrived. Dead Space 3 is now available for purchase at retail stores in North America, as well as on EA’s Origin gaming service. Plus, Electronic Arts announced that DLC is coming for the game next month for $10 to prove that there’s even more to come after the initial release.

DS3_5-580x326

The new game sports a ton of new features, including an innovative drop-in/drop-out feature, as well as an all-new weapon crafting system. The game takes players on a “thrilling ride through the terrors that lie hidden in deep space and the unforgiving ice planet of Tau Volantis.” It sounds like fun, but we hope you’re ready for the challenge that lies ahead.

The DLC pack, called Awakened, will be available in March. There’s no specific date set yet, but you’ll be able to pick it up for $10 through various channels. In the DLC, players will experience the series’ “darkest chapters as the Necromorph battles become even more gruesome and terrifying than ever before.”

The action-horror sequel looks like it’s quite the thrill from what we’re seeing. Vice president and general manager of Visceral Games Steve Papoutsis says that “gamers will experience some of the most disturbing content they have ever seen in a Dead Space game — they are going to love it.” We’d say that’s a pretty good assumption, Steve.

OUYA to be sold at retail stores starting in June

After OUYA‘s immense Kickstarter success, the company is looking to branch out and go mainstream. The portable Android-powered gaming console will begin selling in select retail stores starting in June. Best Buy, Target, and GameStop will sell the console for $99, the same price that Kickstarter backers have been paying for the device.

ouya_tweaked_controller-580x421

The console will also be available online at the company’s website and on Amazon. Of course, though, Kickstarter backers will be the first to get their units. Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman says that Kickstarter backers will receive their consoles in March, while orders from the OUYA website will go out in April, and retail stores will begin selling them in June. You can pre-order the console now through Amazon, Best Buy, or Target.

The console will sell for $99.99, and it’ll come with one controller. An extra controller will cost you $49.99 in retail stores, while getting one on OUYA’s website will only cost $40 shipped. Paying $50 for a controller certainly isn’t outrageous, but it raises some concerns when a controller costs half the price of the console itself. Uhrman says that $49.99 is a “premium price” for a controller, indeed, but she says that the touchpad built into the controller makes up for the cost.

The OUYA console raised more than $8.5 million on Kickstarter and has been taking pre-orders for the consoles on its website. There are over 68,000 consoles that need to be shipped out so far, with potentially even more orders to come no doubt. The tiny Android-powered gaming console is already a huge hit, and we’re pretty excited to see how the OUYA community will grow once the consoles start selling.

Razer announces partnership with eSports team Evil Geniuses

Razer, a company best known for its gaming peripherals and its lime green color schemes, has announced a partnership with eSports team Evil Geniuses in order to “reinforce” the company’s “support of eSports globally.” The partnership will see Razer serve as the gaming team’s official partner for gaming peripherals, with the entire team using Razer gear in all future tournaments.

The Evil Geniuses is one of the oldest professional gaming teams in North America, and they have one of the most prestigious rosters of in the region, so it makes sense that Razer teamed up with the eSports organization. However, Razer also plans to bring Evil Geniuses-branded peripherals and accessories to fans, and will eventually have them for sale on the Razer website.

If you’re not quite sure what the term eSports means, PBS just recently released a video that explores eSports and goes behind the scenes a bit. Essentially, it’s a term that describes competitive video gaming, and it’s short for “electronic sports.” Teams go up against each other playing a variety of games in different genres.

This isn’t the first time that Razer has partnered with an eSports team, though. They’ve made partnerships with Mousesports, Team Liquid, and Counter Logic Gaming in the past, but their partnership with Evil Geniuses is by far the company’s most important eSports partnership yet, and it “reinforces Razer’s commitment to the ever-growing e-Sports industry.”
