Zelda Breadstick Sword: It’s Dangerous to Go Alone, Eat This!

We here at Technabob often feature cakes in the shape of geeky stuff, but more savory baked goods rarely seem to get their fair shake. Here’s one of the few times that a loaf of bread rises to such heights of perfection.

zelda breadstick

Tumblr contributor spacekat267 is a Zelda fan, and decided to bake himself a loaf of bread in the shape of Link’s sword – complete with TriForce markings on the hilt. He goes on to say that it “’twas delicious and most powerful with a side of Lon Lon Ranch.” Very funny, spacekat. Very funny, indeed.

Apparently, the breadstick sword was so well received that he decided that the next time he has time to bake a loaf, he’s going to crank out a Hylian bread shield to go with.

Visualized what Zynga workers do when they're not playing FarmVille

Zynga’s staffers might have had a laser-like focus on releasing FarmVille 2 this week, but that doesn’t mean the company has forgotten how to take a break. One employee (thankfully, also a Reddit member) has revealed that the developer’s San Francisco headquarters has a giant, 16-screen video wall for gaming in the cafeteria — and yes, they’re playing Halo in that photo rather than some future, first-person version of Mafia Wars. It’s no surprise that the employees aren’t playing their own games all the time; we’re pretty sure that even the most avid Facebook gamers would burn out if they did. Nonetheless, it’s hard not to smile at the thought that the same people urging us to buy new crops are sticking plasma grenades in their spare time.

SteelSeries Free Mobile Controller: One GamePad to Rule Them All

The latest horse in the increasingly cluttered mobile controller race is still hampered by the same problem as the others: it’s not compatible with all mobile games. But it is compatible with a lot of hardware, not just mobile devices.

steelseries free mobile gaming controller

On the Android side, the SteelSeries Free Mobile controller works with all Zeemote-enabled apps, while on the iOS side it should work with all apps that are also compatible with the iCade. Aside from that limited compatibility, the controller should also work with “controller-enabled” PC and Mac games.

steelseries free mobile gaming controller 6 150x150
steelseries free mobile gaming controller 7 150x150

Hardware wise, the controller connects via Bluetooth and has almost the same layout as a PS3 controller, except it only has two shoulder buttons. It has a rechargeable battery, which apparently is good for up to 20 hours of “casual play.” I have no idea what that’s supposed to mean.

The controller will be available for the rather exorbitant price of $80 (USD) (€80 in other European markets) this October. One interesting tidbit that I read on the controller’s product page is that SteelSeries is working on a “mobile version” of Engine, the company’s app that lets users customize their controllers. I wonder if it means that the company has found a way to make the controller be compatible with more games.

Madden NFL 13 Sold over 1.6 Million Copies Its First Week

EA has offered up some impressive statistics from the first week of availability for its new Madden NFL 13 video game. I think we all expected this video game to do very well – after all, it’s the most popular sports franchise in all of video gamedom.

madden 13

According to EA, sell through for the game was up 8% year-over-year on HD platforms with more than 1.65 million units sold in its first week. EA says that this is the best ever start for the franchise on this console generation. The first week following the launch saw more than 24 million online games played equating to 47,000 NFL regular seasons.

It looks like a lot gamers spent their Labor Day playing Madden with over 3000 games per minute started on average on Labor Day alone. EA also notes that there are more than 1.4 million fans connected online during the week and there were more than 702,000 unique visitors to the enhanced Madden Ultimate Team mode.

Awesome Traceur Brings Assassin’s Creed to Life with Parkour

Traceur. Defined as a male practitioner of the sport and art that is known as parkour.
Parkour. Defined as a physical discipline of movement that’s focused on overcoming obstacles.

Let’s get on with it now that we’ve got the definitions out of the way.

Assassins Creed Parkour

The world witnessed the sheer awesomeness of the videogame/parkour mashup when a video showcasing the Tempest Freerunning Academy went viral last year. In case you missed it, the academy was actually a gym that was designed to look like Mario Land.

This time around, we’ve got some awesome parkour action in the style of Assassin’s Creed featuring the awesome traceur Ronnie Shalvis and directed by the prolific and talented Devin Graham (aka Devin Supertramp). I’ll probably just ruin it if I try to describe it using mere words, so watch the awesomeness for yourself by checking out video below.

If you want to see how they shot it and pulled off all the stunts, check out the behind-the-scenes footage here:

Nintendo Risk Might as Well Be Called Nintendo Reward

A labor of love 7 years in the making, this heavily customized, Nintendo-themed variant of Risk was made by – drum roll please – redditor NintendoRisk. Instead of our countries and continents, the territories are places from various classic Nintendo games, including the Kanto region, Hyrule, Eagleland, Dinosaur Island and more. It also has aerial territories such as Zebes and the Great Fox ship.

The art looks really good, not just the stuff on the board, but on the cards – there are 100 Hero and 42 Territory cards – as well. NintendoRisk said that all of the artwork is in high resolution. The board for example is about 20,000 pixels wide and its digital copy is about 700MB.

My only suggestion would be to add a border graphic of some sort on the board. I’m sure NintendoRisk can fill it up with Nintendo’s vast cache of characters and icons.

BioShock Wallet: for Big Daddies & Little Gamers Alike

A very nice custom made leather wallet commisioned by BioShock fan Josh McKinney from Steph of Sova Leatherworks. It has a detailed etching of Big Daddy and a silhouette of Rapture on the other.

I wonder if it’s waterproof.

Unfortunately Steph won’t be accepting any more commissions until after Christmas to catch up on her previous orders. Meanwhile check out her other game-themed wallets and her website while you think of a design for your wallet.

Final Fantasy Ultimate Box Gives You All 13 Games for $450

Do you love the Final Fantasy games? I don’t just mean love. I mean, are you obsessed with the franchise? Do you collect all of the merchandise? Well, here’s the ultimate package to feed your obsession. To celebrate 25 years, Square-Enix(JP) has packaged together all of its core Final Fantasy titles into a single box set.

final fantasy box set
You’ll not only get discs for Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy XIII, but you also get a numbered presentation plaque with new artwork from character artist Yoshitaka Amano, a two-disc soundtrack and a commemorative DVD. It will cost you 35,000 yen, (~$450USD). To play all of the games, you’ll need a PlayStation, a PlayStation 2, a PlayStation 3 and a PSP.

It will arrive in Japan on December 18th, but sadly it probably won’t go on sale internationally any time soon, so the rest of us will just have to deal and whine about it.

Space Invaders Keyboard Mosaics: CTRL-ALT-ATTACK

I love art that’s made out of old junk. Especially if they do something really clever. These Space Invaders mosaics made out of junk keyboards are very clever indeed. I wish I had one for my wall.
space invaders keyboardThey’re a great mashup of computer and pop culture. They may not actually type anymore, but wouldn’t be very intuitive for typists anyhow. It beats throwing keyboards in a landfill somewhere. Now if someone can just make one of these that controls an actual game of Space Invaders on a nearby monitor, my life will be complete.

They were created by ThreeHeadedMonkey on Flickr who definitely knows how to make some awesome retro art. I wish I had thought of this. I guess I still could make one anyhow.

Custom Mario Guitar: Its-a Me, Guitario!

If I could play the guitar and play it well, then I’d definitely go out and try to score myself one of these awesome customized Mario Bros. guitars. I mean, just look at it.

Awesome Mario Guitar

Of course, the first thing I’d actually play is a rocked-out version of the Super Mario Bros. theme. How about you?

This custom guitar was made by ’geekd out’, who hails from Australia. He describes it as:

24 Fret, Full size, amazing quality. Full floating tremolo, Locking neck, Easy access to the top of the neck, Mushroom inlays, amazing sound, and looks fantastic.

Here’s a clip of him playing his awesome guitar:

Looks like the Super Mario guitar is for sale up on G33KeD for $489 Australian Dollars (~$500 USD), and you’d better move quick if you want one. You never know if Nintendo’s lawyers will swoop in and try and stop to this wonderful (but likely unofficial) guitar.
