Rovio takes Angry Birds Space on a spin with NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover, teases Red Planet for fall video

It was almost as inevitable as gravity, really. Rovio has teamed up with NASA to offer a special, Curiosity-themed episode inside Angry Birds Space. The trek has the avians scouring 20 levels of the Martian landscape with a few bonuses thrown in for good measure. Just like your favorite childhood breakfast cereal, there’s even a token healthy ingredient — in this case, a chance for gamers to learn about Curiosity’s exploration whenever they’re not busy smashing pigs. Android and iOS users can dip into the new chapter right after they update, but that’s not even the full extent of Rovio’s plans. If the environs of Gale Crater are too limiting, you’ll be glad to hear that the game developer is teasing a full-scale Red Planet variant for the fall.

Play This Borderlands 2 Demake While You Wait for the Real Game

Waiting sucks. But unfortunately we have to wait a while longer for Borderlands 2. It will arrive on September 18th in North America and September 21st internationally. The developer, Gearbox Software, knows that we need a fix so they’ve released an official 16-bit demake of the game.
the borderlands
It should be just enough to whet your appetite while you are waiting. This demake is titled The Border Lands. Players can pick one of the new characters that are available in Borderlands 2, but sprite form. It looks like it’s all about shooting enemies, level up, and pick up loot.

In other words it’s just like the Borderlands that you know and love. To play you just use the arrow keys to move and the space bar to fire. Depending on what weapons you use, it could be a quick game, though. For instance, a railgun that fires both in front and behind of the player will annihilate most enemies easily, even the bosses. It is just some fun while you bite your nails and wait for the real deal to arrive. Check it out here.

COPS Skyrim: What You Gonna Do With an Arrow to the Knee?

I’m sure at some point we’ve all seen COPS on television. It never ceases to amaze me just how stupid people can be when they’re drunk or stoned. If you’ve ever wondered what all the guards in Skyrim do on a normal, daily basis when not taking arrows to the knee or fighting off dragons this is the video for you.

skyrim cops

The guys over at Nerdist have put together a video called COPS Skyrim, and it’s funny. Apparently, this will be a serialized video posted to YouTube and in the first episode, the guards encounter a number of bad boys, include a confused elderly man in the roadway mixing up stuff and more.

My favorite is the stolen wood bowl where the cop asks the thief to pull the animal over. I laughed out loud when the officer called for his partner to sic the dog on him and then screams “no not all the dogs!” The possible flatbacker is funny as is the perfect theme song.

Microsoft Cuts Kinect Price by 36%

If you’ve been holding out on buying yourself a Kinect for your Xbox 360 because you thought the $150 price was too much, you may want to reach for your wallet now. Microsoft has announced a price cut for the Xbox 360 Kinect of $40. The price cut will apparently be permanent, so it sucks to be you if you just bought one at full price.

kinect tb

The new official price for the Kinect is $109.99(USD) in the United States. A price cut is also coming to the rest of North America and Asia-Pacific countries as well. In October, the price will drop in Australia and New Zealand. This will make European and Japanese fans of the Kinect angry. Apparently, there are no plans to cut the price in those countries.

This should spur adoption of the Kinect in the US for people who aren’t really are interested in the device for gaming. I’ll admit that Kinect games were interesting for about two days and then the motion controls lost their luster for me. However, with other Xbox 360 apps such as Netflix and the menus being navigable using the Kinect the device is becoming increasingly more useful outside of gaming, and is certainly the darling of the hacking and interactive community.

Space Invader Floor Tile Job: Intentional or Random Coincidence?

While we’ve definitely seen our share of video game themed bathrooms here on Technabob, all of the ones I’ve come across seem very much like they were intentionally done that way. Not so much with this bathroom, which has a subliminal message for all fans of retro gaming…

space invaders tile

Look carefully at the tiny blue tiles, and you’ll see a Space Invader lurking there, right in front of the toilet. The guy who snapped this picture says his employee that installed the tiles in the bathroom of this drug treatment center is a video game fan, so he suspects it was intentional, but I like to think that it was totally random. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at the marble tiles in my bathroom and tried to imagine a pattern was there, like a demonic human face staring back – but it’s always my mind playing tricks on me – like the man on the moon, or Jesus on a grilled cheese sandwich.

Have you guys come across other video game characters lurking in seemingly random patterns? Feel free to post in the comments if you find any cool ones out there. And installations by Invader don’t count.

The Pianocade Makes Sweet Music With the Konami Code [Video]

And to think your parents claimed you were wasting your life playing thousands of hours of video games as a kid. Little did they know you were actually building up important musical skills that could one day see you performing at Carnegie Hall—at least if they let you play this fantastic Pianocade keyboard/video game controller hybrid. Papercraft Crysis Nanosuit 2.0 is a True Work of Art

I’ve always been impressed by the things papercraft artists can pull off with simple paper, glue and an X-Acto knife. I’m particularly blown away by this paper model of the Nanosuit 2.0 from Crysis 2 and Crysis 3.

The model was created by Julius Perdana of Paper Replika, after initially building a 1/6th scale model of the Nanosuit a couple of years ago as a commission for Crytek.

Recently, Julius came across a Crysis 3 promotional image of the Nanosuit 2.0 equipped with a tactical bow, and decided to make an even more impressive version of the model, along with the bow.

The template for the model was drawn as a scalable vector image, with all of the details handdrawn by the artist. I can only imagine that means he could produce a life-size model using the same vector art if he had the time and inclination. You can check out more images of the Nanosuit 2.0 papercraft model over on Paper Replika, where you can also download the template and assembly instructions so you can assemble your own.

Pokémon Generation 1 Cross-Stitched: Textile Pokédex

Linda aka Eponases wants to be the very best Pokémon stitcher, like no one ever was. So she took the original Pokémon and cross-stitched ‘em all in one piece of cloth.

Linda based her project on a pattern uploaded by a user named Servotron on the Sprite Stitch forums. She says the materials she used only amounted to about $80 (USD). I’m sure there are fans there who’d be willing to pay a lot more than that for the finished product, specially when they find out that it took Linda nearly 8 months to finish it. Here’s Linda with her work:

Here’s a stop motion time lapse video that Linda made to document her impressive achievement.

Replay Arcade Machine Will Cost You More Than a Token

Arcade machines are a part of a generation gone by. With arcade centers closing left and right, a lot of nostalgic gamers have taken to building or buying their own machine for home use. I’m sure many arcade fans would want to preserve the loud and garish old school look of the machines, but if you’re looking for something more subtle check out the Replay Arcade.

The Replay Arcade is a one-off machine made by London-based Tom Goodfellow. According to Tom, the machine is equipped with a JAMMA circuit board (similar to this one) that has 60 games built-in, as well as “arcade industry standard joystick and buttons.” I’m not up to date on arcade standards, but who are we to doubt the words of a Goodfellow? But it’s most outstanding quality is the cabinet’s retro and minimalist design.

Super Mario Spiral Clock: Down the 16-Bit Hole

Every time is Super Mario time with this spiral clock featuring characters and icons from Nintendo’s timeless platformer. You might find it hard to tell the time on this clock because of its pseudo-asymmetrical look. That’s all I see when I look at this thing.

Warp-pipe to Etsy and pay $25 (USD) to get the clock. Seller BackStreet Crafts also sells other geeky clocks and spiral clocks.
