7,000 Sticky Notes Make up This Super Mario Stop-Motion Animation

Sticky notes are a useful office tool. I can’t get enough of them, and after years of use I don’t know how many I’ve used. However, I can’t say that I’ve ever seen this many sticky notes used in a single animation.

post it life super mario sticky notes animation

Post It Life was put together by animation master FinalCutKing using no less than 7,000 Post-It notes. The notes are the perfect size to represent pixels of your favorite video game character, giving life to Mario as he jumps, runs, and makes his way through real life office desks and hallways. Pac-Man and Tetris stop by for a little fun too.

A word to the wise: always keep your sticky notes entertained!

Mario Proposal Culminates a Match Made in Gamer Heaven

Back in the day, all a guy (or girl) had to do was buy a ring and get down on one knee to propose to the love of their loves. Things have gotten more complicated these days, and proposals are no exception. But more than that, they’re also getting even more creative. So how do proposals work for two massive gamers? Mario-style, of course.

Tumblr ProposalThe image above was posted by Redditor urotsukidoji, who explained that the image showed how her gamer friend proposed to her gamer boyfriend.

Even in proposals, it seems like Player One always get the fancier controller, yes?

Best wishes to the now-engaged gamers (assuming he said yes, of course.)

Wheatley Actually Makes it to Spaaaaaaace!

If you’ve ever played the video game Portal 2, you surely remember the floating robotic orb or personality core known as Wheatley. If you’re a fan of Wheatley, you will certainly appreciate this. An unnamed tech working at NASA has etched a likeness of Wheatley with the phrase “In spaaaaaaace!” underneath the likeness on the side of a component that actually went into space.

It’s not clear what the etched component is. Whatever the component is meant to do, it blasted into space aboard the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency H-II Transfer Vehicle that launched on Friday to resupply the ISS. Valve attributes the quote “In spaaaaaaace!” to Wheatley, but apparently another character in the game, the Space Core, said that phrase.

Valve said in a blog post, “thanks to an anonymous tech at NASA, Wheatley is actually going to actual space.” It’s cool when NASA and other scientists actually have a sense of humor and do things like this.

ToeJam & Earl reportedly coming to PS3

It is perhaps one of the greatest cult classics ever released on the Sega Genesis, and one of the most heralded titles that never spawned a successful spinoff or even franchise continuation. We’re talking about ToeJam & Earl, and it looks like it will be re-released for the first time ever on the PS3, as a downloadable promotion along with other vintage Sega games.

The publisher is apparently planning to launch a series of titles called Sega’s Vintage Collection. Jet Set Radio is another of the games allegedly set to launch on the PS3. But it is ToeJam & Earl that is gaining the majority of the attention. It has won all sorts of love for its two-player split-screen adventure gameplay, with randomized settings and goals that assured you’d have a different experience every time you played.

There was a largely unsuccessful sequel that also launched on the Genesis, and then the entire franchise was reborn on the original Xbox with a new game simply titled ToeJam & Earl, but that one was also a commercial flop (though potentially because the Xbox just didn’t have a wide enough audience at the time). Regardless, for fans of the original, this should be very welcome news. Stay tuned for official words from Sega.

New super slim PS3 poised to shake the market

While a lot of people want to throw the PS4 in with the rumors and speculation about Microsoft’s new Xbox, Sony isn’t having any of that. Such is demonstrated with the rumored “super slim” PS3 that’s on the way. It will reportedly have Bluetooth and 802.11b/g, and will come in models all the way up to 500 GB. It’s also believed to be priced at around $150.

It could very well be Sony’s way of saying that its console is still alive and kicking, and that gamers should not begin thinking about the PS4. “A dramatic price reduction to $150 for PS3 would be terrific for Sony and for the industry overall. A value-priced PS3 could rapidly increase the base and would free up more consumer revenue for higher software sales volume,” said Pidgeon.

Of course, very few details about the PS3 successor are known at this point. Frankly, it’s kind of hard to figure out what to make of the state of the gaming industry right now. “Microsoft is less likely to reduce console prices this year with already strong hardware sales and Halo 4 coming out in Q4, but should Sony price PS3 at $150 this year, Microsoft could see stronger incentive to cut Xbox 360 prices sooner in retaliation,” Pidgeon said.

Zynga to offer real-money gambling in 2013

Enough with that silly fake money in Farmville and the lack of real-world thrills in Zynga Poker. The country’s favorite social game company is looking to expand into the world of sin and will offer a poker game that allows players to gamble actual money sometime in the first half of 2013. However, don’t expect it to be hosted – or perhaps even playable – in the US, where online gambling is all but expunged due to several state laws banning the practice.

The announcement came from Zynga CEO Mark Pincus during a conference call today with investors. Just looking at some of the reports when it comes to this market makes it very easy to realize why the company would want to go down this new path. For example, Zynga users currently spend an average of $2 – $3 per month. Of course, multiply that by millions of users and you’re doing pretty well. But by comparison, online gambling sites typically see revenues of around $300 per paying user per month.

It will be the first time such a major name outside the world of gambling hopes to make it big in the online gambling world. Every other noted video game publisher has shied away from it because of many issues, not the least of which is that real-world gambling gives publishers an automatic “AO” rating from the ESRB, and most publishers are ingrained in the video game rating system so deeply that they don’t dare launch a game that doesn’t have that group’s stamp of approval. Of course, the legalities also play a huge role in this. This is going to be an interesting story to watch.

Metal Gear Creator Hideo Kojima on 25 Years of Hiding in Boxes, Eating Rations, Snakes and Foxes

I can’t remember the last time I shared an article here on Technabob, but for Hideo Kojima, I’m willing to making an exception. This month marks the 25th year of the Metal Gear series of videogames, and the PlayStation blog was able to interview Kojima for a surprisingly honest retrospective.

While the one page article is barely enough to tell a story that spans 25 years, Kojima still managed to share a lot in the interview, like how he almost left Konami after a game that he had already spent 6 months on was cancelled. Fortunately his superiors gave him a chance to create a combat game for the MSX. The result? The first Metal Gear.

Kojima also mentions how in 1998, he heard about “a console on which polygons could be created in real time” – the PlayStation. He was pumped up at the thought of creating a Metal Gear game where the player could change the position of the camera because he considered his creation a “hide-and-seek” game. The result of that excitement is one of my favorite games: Metal Gear Solid.

Kojima also mentioned that he had “bitter memories” of the production of Metal Gear Solid, because he was “only” a designer and not a producer, and thus had no say about a lot of things like the budget and release date.

If you’re a fan of the Metal Gear series or Kojima, I highly recommend that you read the entire interview on the PlayStation blog. I will share one last tidbit for my fellow fans: Kojima said that on August 30, he will share what the Fox Engine – a cross-platform video game engine developed by Kojima’s studio – can do. Thank you very much Kojima-san for all the great games. You don’t have to make Metal Gear any more. But I guess it’s too late for that.

Ouya will be about the size of a Rubik’s Cube

No one is expecting the innovative Android-based Ouya game console to be huge in size, but it might be even smaller than you’ve pictured. “Our console is quite small, around the size of a Rubik’s cube, and so it will easily fit anywhere in a room, or be easy to throw in a backpack,” said hardware designer Yves Behar in an interview.

The interview was posted on Kotaku. The Ouya – which boasts a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage – was first tipped off earlier this month when listings from AngelList.com referenced the device. Since then, it has been made official and gained viral attention since it was added to Kickstarter to earn development funds from people wanting to get in on the ground floor.

There are tens of thousands of investors in the Ouya project on Kickstarter. Most investors have plunked down at least $99, at which point the company says it will provide a console and a controller. Streaming video game devices appear to be the big thing these days. Onlive is as popular as ever, and is poised to get a large boost when it fully integrates with Google TV. So Ouya is entering this space at just the right time.

Droid X360 PS Vita clone goes for the KIRF prize, antagonizes Microsoft, Motorola and Sony at the same time

Can we establish a KIRF award for Most Likely to Invite Multiple Lawsuits? If so, Long Xun Software would have to claim the statuette for its Droid X360, at least if it dared set foot in the US. This prime example of keepin’ it real fake is even more of a PS Vita clone than the Yinlips YDPG18, but goes the extra mile with a name that’s likely to irk Microsoft, Motorola, Verizon and George Lucas all at once. That’s even discounting the preloaded emulators for just about every pre-1999 Nintendo, Sega and Sony console. Inside, you’ll at least find a device that’s reasonably up to snuff: the 5-inch handheld is running Android 4.0 on a 1.5GHz single-core Quanzhi A10 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of built-in space, a 2-megapixel camera at the back and a VGA shooter at the front. If the almost gleeful amount of copyright and trademark violation isn’t keeping you from wanting this award-winner, you’ll have to ask Long Xun for pricing and availability.

Arcade Mash-up Prints Confuse and Amuse

Say the words Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Centipede, Galaga or Joust, and you’ve just named some of my all-time favorite arcade games. So when I stumbled onto these unusual variants of these 1980s classics, I was at once befuddled and at the same time intrigued.

donkey dug

These mash-up prints were created by 9times1minus1 (also known as “eight”) over on Etsy, and they envision the characters from iconic arcade games invading other games. So for instance, there’s Donkey Dug, which puts Pooka, Fygar and Dig Dug on Donkey Kong’s girders.

joust bros

Then, there’s Joust Bros., which is the perfect synthesis of Joust and Mario Bros. I always thought those levels looked similar, and flinging turtles into the lava pit below makes just about as much sense as ostriches anyhow.

donkey burger

Other mashups include Donkey Burger (DK x BurgerTime), and the oddly named, but somehow appealing Ms. Paciaga (Ms. Pac-Man x Galaga).

ms paciaga

While I’m not sure that I would have wanted to play all of these games, I have to say that some of them look like they would have worked just fine as 9times1minus1 envisions them. When you really think about it, did the plots and characters in any 1980s video game really make that much sense? Why couldn’t Jumpman have been a chef on a quest to make the perfect hamburger? I would have ponied up a quarter to try my hand at that.

If you’d like to line your walls with these unusual video games, they’re available for $25(USD) each as 16×20 digital prints over on Etsy.
