Xbox One Titanfall Bundle Gets US Price Cut

A few weeks back, we mentioned that the price of the Xbox One and Titanfall bundle in had come down a bit in the UK. At the time, I wondered if that price cut would be coming to the US as well. We now know that the lower price is indeed coming to the US.

Reports indicate that the price of the Xbox One and Titanfall bundle at Best Buy and Walmart is being reduced by $50. That makes the console bundle available for $450. That brings the cost of the Xbox One closer to the price of the PS4 in the US.

However, the Xbox One is still $50 or so more than the PS4. The PS4 sells for $399, but you do get one of the best games around for the Xbox One in the bundle, so the price works out to be competitive. Interestingly the price discount is said to be coming from the retailers, not Microsoft.

Dragon Quest Floor Mats: Wiper of the Remnant Slimes

Square Enix will be releasing floor mats featuring graphics from the 8-bit Dragon Quest games. The mats are made of acrylic fiber and will come in three variants: journey – i.e. a portal – staircase and poison swamp. Yes kids, this is how swamps looked like back then.

Some of my favorite games of all time are the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Now you can be reminded of these 16-bit SEGA classics every time you take a sip of your favorite beverage.

Arduino-based 8-bit Handheld Game Console: Gamebuino

Late last year I talked about the DIY Gamer Kit, which contained all the parts you need to assemble your own handheld game console. In other words, the kit introduces you to video game hardware. Aurélien Rodot’s Gamebuino on the other hand comes fully assembled and is intended to get you into video game software.

gamebuino arduino 8 bit handheld system by r0d0t 620x402magnify

The Gamebuino has an ATmega 328 microcontroller, an 84 x 84 monochrome display with automatic backlight, six buttons, a 4-channel speaker and a 240mAh battery. It also has four ports: one microUSB, one microSD and two I2C ports. While the DIY Gamer Kit is also based on the Arduino language, Aurélien made a software library for Gamebuino, which includes a graphics engine, a game engine, sound effects, user interface and more. Coding a Gamebuino game will be easier and faster because you don’t have to start from scratch.

Aurélien says he’s already finalized the Gamebuino’s hardware, the software library and a few sample games. Right now he’s working on a browser that will let you load and switch between games from a microSD card. He’s also going to make tutorials and setup an online community to make it easier for newbies to get help. Pledge at least €35 (~$48 USD) on Indiegogo to get a Gamebuino – and priceless knowledge – as a reward.

The new maps include Lost Islands, Wave Breaker, Nansha Strike, and Operation Mortar. The DLC also brings new weapons, two new gadgets, a hovercraft vehicle, ten assignments, and more. Carrier Assault is an homage to the Titan mode from Battlefield 2142.

The DLC will launch March 25 and will land on the Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, and PS4. The March 25 launch date is for Premium subscribers, other members will be able to get the DLC on April 8. Naval Strike is the third of five DLC packs that will be offered for Battlefield 4.

A Slow Day in Afghanistan

What do you do when you are deployed in Afghanistan and you have way too much down time? Sounds like a good problem to have in Afghanistan. Well, Redditor b3tarded is there and made the most of his or her downtime by creating a Mario mural. They could have read books, or slept, or got into some trouble. Instead they created a great piece of geek art.

The scene included pipes, bricks and even the timer. They did a pretty good job, given the limited resources on hand. It likely also helped to cheer up a bunch of other soldiers.

You are a true geek sir or madam. Awesome job.

Rescape Augmented Reality Mobile FPS Platform: CountAR-Strike

If 13th Lab has its way, you could soon be playing first-person games using your surroundings as a battlefield. Or a space station, a temple and anything else you can imagine. The computer vision company is working on Rescape, an FPS platform for mobile devices that can scan and digitize your environment, turning it into a video game map.

13th Lab uses a robotics technique called Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). With the help of cameras and sensors, SLAM allows a device to make a map of its environment and place itself – i.e. know its location – within the map that it just made. The end result is shown in the image above. If you look closely you can see that the iPhone is showing a virtual equivalent of the player’s environment – everything from the structures, objects and even other players. 13th Lab calls this mix of augmented and virtual reality Reality Gaming.

As of now, a Rescape package includes a 180º fisheye lens and an adjustable gun controller with a trigger and a d-pad. To drive costs down and make it easier for app developers to port their FPS games, Rescape will make use of your mobile device to map and digitize your environment, as well as track your position.

rescape first person shooter platform for mobile games 4 620x348magnify

The Rescape software development kit (SDK) handles the mapping feature, as well as the ability to digitally paint over a map and turn it into your battle ground of choice. I don’t know if the SDK will be simple enough for normal folks to understand and use though.  As I mentioned, mobile game developers can port existing FPS games into the Rescape platform, but that’s not as fun as turning your house or university into a game map.

Pledge at least $39 (USD) on Kickstarter to get the Rescape controller and Office Defender, the game shown in the video. Pledge at least $129 and you get the controller, the game and the Rescape SDK. When it launches Rescape will only support the iPhone 5, 5C and 5S, with “experimental support” for the iPhone 4S. 13th Lab promises that it will provide support for Android devices within a few months after the launch.

Guy Selling Flappy Bird Drawing for $1,000, Say What?

People just seem to get a little crazy when it comes to Flappy Bird. Forget about how frustrating the game is. I’m talking about stuff like putting phones with Flappy Bird on eBay that sell for way too much money. Or the fact that somebody was inspired enough to make this or this.
flappy bird art 620x435magnify

Now some crackpot on eBay is selling this original Flappy Bird drawing for $1,000. I can’t help but wonder if anyone is crazy enough to buy it.

It was hand drawn by the seller, who says that the funds will go to his “collage” education. So you can see that he really does need to attend “collage”. It is Flappy Bird art and it is original. Wanna hang this on your wall for a grand? Didn’t think so.

PS Vita Gets Crunchyroll Anime App Among Others

Back in the day, I loved to watch some anime. A local TV station had Robotech and Star Blazers on after school and you could bet I was watching. If you are still a big fan of anime content and happen to own a PS Vita, you will love this.

ps vita crunchyroll anime 620x300magnify

Sony has announced three new apps for the PS Vita are available now. One of them is Crunchyroll and it has all sorts of anime and manga content straight from Japan. It offers content like Naruto Shippuden, Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, Hunter × Hunter as well as other content.

The coolest part is that some of those shows will have new episodes available to watch only hours after they first air in Japan. Along with that app, NHL GameCenter Live is available now for hockey fans and Qello Concerts has launched for music fans. Coming later this spring, the PS Vita will finally get Hulu Plus and Redbox Instant along with Gaiam TV.
