China reverses ‘ban’ on videogames, but there’s a catch and it involves Shanghai’s free trade zone

China reverses its 'ban' on videogames, but there's a catch and it involves Shanghai's free trade zone

Consider this the somewhat end of China’s 13-year old (loosely enforced) “ban” on videogames. A new policy issued by the country’s State Council amends the language of a prior bill from 2000 which “strictly limited” the manufacture and import of game consoles. Now, foreign companies that register within Shanghai’s free trade zone, the country’s first such pilot program designed to spur private investment, competition and economic growth, are free to sell gaming consoles and arcade machines throughout China. Restrictions on “unhealthy” content still remain, however, with only games whitelisted by the Ministry of Culture allowed for sale. But despite this official reversal, Chinese gamers have long enjoyed access to popular videogames and consoles, anyway. Systems from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, as well as knock-offs, have all been easily accessible on the black market. That’s not to mention Nintendo’s China-only iQue — a “safe” mini-N64 created with the country’s cultural guidelines in mind — which has been on sale through official market channels for some time.

iConsole.tv Android gaming PC updated with Intel Iris graphics, consumer units expected to start at $399

Remember the iConsole.tv, Christopher Price’s Android-powered gaming PC? It’s back, and it’s better: Mobile Media Ventures has announced that the project’s developer unit is getting a spec overhaul, upgrading to a Haswell-based processor with Intel Iris graphics. The dev hardware is getting a new price too, and will now be available for $699. While the company hasn’t released final pricing on the consumer model, it estimates the computer will cost between $399 and $499, depending on the configuration. The final details won’t be available for a few months yet, but Engadget spent some time with an early prototype back in May — discovering a wicked fast Android device with a comforting Linux dual-boot option (for when you want a more traditional desktop, of course). Although we won’t know for sure until we see the final hardware in action, the iConsole.tv is starting to look like it might be a fairly versatile Steambox alternative. Check out the company’s official announcement after the break.

Battlefield 4 for Xbox One may get Kinect-based look controls

Battlefield 4 for Xbox One may get Kinectbased look controls and voice commands

If you’ve wanted to immerse your body in a first-person shooter, you’ve typically had to use a complex simulator. Battlefield 4 may soon provide a decidedly simpler (and cheaper) alternative. DICE’s Patrick Bach has revealed to Xbox Wire that the game may use the Xbox One’s Kinect sensor for head-tracking look controls, such as leaning around a corner. Voice commands might also be available, Bach says. There’s no guarantees that BF4 will get the new input methods, but DICE may have competition as an incentive. Infinity Ward recently hinted to Official Xbox Magazine that Call of Duty: Ghosts could use Kinect for more than navigating menus, so there’s a chance that at least one of the two games will have motion control in the future.

3DRealms drops lawsuit against Gearbox over Duke Nukem Forever royalties

3DRealms and Gearbox settle lawsuit over Duke Nukem Forever royalties

There’s been a lot of fallout from the Duke Nukem Forever launch in 2011, and not just from critics — 3DRealms sued Gearbox earlier this year for allegedly skimping on royalties until it paid off a loan. All that’s now water under the bridge, as 3DRealms has dismissed its lawsuit. The game developer’s Scott Miller describes the suit as a “misunderstanding;” Gearbox is in the clear following an evidence review, he says. The dismissal may not patch things up with gamers, but it shows that industry disputes don’t always have to reach a bitter conclusion. Read 3DRealms’ full statement after the break.

Ubisoft’s Uplay social gaming platform coming to PS4 and Xbox One

Watch Dogs

Ubisoft’s Uplay has a mixed reputation; while it brings rewards and social elements to games, it’s also known for its internet-based copy protection and occasional security risks. However much you like the service, it’s sticking around — Ubisoft has confirmed that Uplay is coming to both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The “full scope” of the service’s features will be available in the company’s games for both platforms, including launch titles like Assassin’s Creed 4 and Watch Dogs. Whether or not that includes copy protection isn’t clear, however; there’s no word of any DRM beyond what’s built into the consoles. We’ve reached out to Ubisoft for clarification, and we’ll let you know if it sheds more light on the subject.

Xbox One will support up to eight controllers (update: PS4 supports four)

Xbox One will support up to eight controllers

We’ve already gotten an intimate look at the Xbox One controller on multiple occasions, but Microsoft’s just snuck in some new tidbits about how the gamepad will work with its new console. Ballmer and Co. quietly disclosed on the gaming machine’s official site that the gamepads have a 30-foot range, and that up to eight of them can simultaneously connect to a single One. Naturally, developers will have to account for the additional controllers before you can hop into a Halo match with seven friends on a single machine. We can’t imagine that divvying up a display into eight parts will result in a terribly comfortable experience, but there are certainly other ways to include extra folks in multiplayer games.

Update: Shuhei Yoshida confirmed on Twitter that the PlayStation 4 will only support four controllers simultaneously — so if you plan to game in person with more than a quartet per console, it looks like Xbox is the way to go.

Major Nelson: Xbox One won’t support external storage at launch

Major Nelson Xbox One won't support external storage at launch

We hope you weren’t counting on using the Xbox One’s USB ports for external storage from day one; as it turns out, you’ll likely have to be patient. Speaking at the PAX Prime expo this weekend, Microsoft’s Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) mentioned that external drive support wouldn’t be available at launch because the Xbox team was “working on other things.” It’s not certain when the feature will arrive, Hryb says. We’ve reached out to Microsoft to verify the statement. If it’s accurate, though, you’ll want to be cautious when filling the Xbox One’s built-in 500GB drive with Xbox Game Store downloads.

Sony strikes broadband deals for PS4: Orange, T-Mobile, Virgin Media and more (update: UK details)

PS4 broadband deals

Sony knows that high-speed internet access is vital to the PS4’s success, but that level of service isn’t always guaranteed in Europe. To solve this problem, the company is striking deals for PS4-friendly internet access with a slew of European providers. Ono, Orange, T-Mobile and Virgin Media are some of the first confirmed partners. Details of the partnerships are scarce at present, although the companies involved suggest that Sony’s ISP agreements will at least cover bigger European countries like France, Germany, Spain and the UK.

Update: Virgin Media adds that it’s the only UK partner.

Sony lands key deals for PS4 and PS Vita indie games: Rogue Legacy, Hotline Miami 2 and more

Sony has long argued that the PS4 and PS Vita are indie-friendly consoles, and it’s backing up words with deeds at Gamescom. The company has landed a PS4 exclusive for the console version of Rogue Legacy. Both the PS4 and Vita are also getting a new version of The Binding of Isaac (called Rebirth), while a new N+ (N++) game is coming to PlayStation hardware. In a few cases, Sony will get first crack at some anticipated games — a Hotline Miami sequel and Guns of Icarus Online will make their console debuts on the PS4 and PS Vita. If your tastes in games venture beyond the mainstream, Sony may have you covered for the foreseeable future.
