BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe previews mid-range lust magnet

You can tell a lot about a company from its concepts, and judging by the Concept 4 Series Coupé, BMW is ready to go big in mid-range sports models. Slotting in just about the 3 Series, and continuing BMW’s even-numbered specialist model strategy, the Concept 4 Series Coupé is lower, longer, and wider than its smaller sibling, with the traditional kidney grille and headlamps pinched down for an angry snout, and connected with an “optical fiber” that snakes out from the inner headlight tube and to the grille itself.

Elsewhere there’s distinctive venting – including slightly Ferrari-esque intakes in the front apron – and satin-finish aluminum trim dotted around the exterior. They’re functional, too, splitting air intake between the engine and the so-called Air Curtain which “hugs” the wheel arches to cool the brakes and also reduce fuel consumption.

20-inch exclusive-design alloys and some highly-reflective surfacing – including the “double swage line” on the sides, again borrowed from the 3 Series – keep the concept looking low and lean. At the rear, there are L-shaped lights which shine with different brightnesses, to add a greater sense of depth, while the rear apron echoes the three-way split of the front.

BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé:

Inside, it’s a cocoon of leather and metal, with some natural chestnut trim and BMW’s usual iDrive interface. A sizable display sits on the top of the dashboard, with the console curving slightly around the driver, though there’s still room in the back for two seats.

BMW isn’t talking production plans for the Concept 4 Series Coupé, but neither is it being particularly coy about the model’s forecourt potential. “BMW is looking ahead to the fourth generation of its sporty mid-range coupe” the company said in a statement about the car. “The ’4′ doesn’t just mark the start of a new cycle, it represents the zenith of a development curve.”

Star Trek Into Darkness teaser released!

The official teaser for upcoming movie Star Trek Into Darkness has been released, helping build excitement for the second installment of the reboot due to hit theaters in May 2013. Seeing the return of director J.J. Abrams, along with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Captain Kirk and Mr Spock, the movie also includes the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch – known for his role on UK Sherlock Holmes reboot Sherlock – as the gruff-voiced villain.

Exact details of the movie are still under wraps, but we do know it will feature some impressive audio. Abrams and his team have partnered with Dolby Atmos, though not every theater will be able to live up to the quality of the soundtrack; there’ll be a special list of qualifying locations released closer to the movie’s debut.

What does seem to have made it through – judging by the teaser, at least – are some Prometheus-esque siren wails. It’s not the only connection Star Trek Into Darkness has with the Ridley Scott movie, with Lost-alumni Damon Lindelof also having penned the new Abrams film.

According to the little we know so far, the movie sees the Enterprise crew return to Earth to find crisis has taken hold, with Starfleet in disarray and Kirk forced to lead a manhunt to catch the man responsible. Star Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17, 2013.

Star Trek Into Darkness international trailer:

Update: Looks like the Japanese trailer has a little extra to it (thanks Mike!); there’s a plot clue tucked in at the end which the international version doesn’t get:

Sci-Fi Your World Supercut: 100 Sci-Fi Movies in 6 Minutes

V for Vendetta. Watchmen. Back to the Future and Star Wars. Personally, these are four of my top picks in the sci-fi genre. Did these movies make it to your all-time favorite sci-fi movies list? No? Well, maybe Avatar, E.T. or Independence Day are more your type.

Either way, if you love sci-fi or movies in general, then you’ll enjoy this super-cool sci-fi supercut that puts together a six-minute montage of over a hundred sci-fi movies.

Sci Fi SupercutOh, and did I forget to mention TRON?

The video was put together by Cosmo Scharf and Austin Kilgore, who probably have a whole lot of love for sci-fi. Check out the video below and let the movie-spotting games begin!

Grand Theft Auto: RISE is Live-Action GTA Goodness

Some of the new live-action short films that have been surfacing for video game such as Halo 4 and made more than a few gamers ache for high-quality Hollywood content based on our favorite video games. I know the Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn series made me very sad that Hollywood cancel the live-action Halo movie that was in the works.

gta rise

short film has surfaced based on the Grand Theft Auto series that uses live-action mixed with some slick computer-generated graphics. The short film was directed by Gevorg Karensky and looks exactly how you’d expect a real-world version of the video game to look.

The short shows GTA IV main character Niko Bellic on a thrilling mission to recover a smartphone. I’m really digging this live-action short, which you can check out above.

LEGO Time Twister 2 Clock: Time is Better the Second Time Around

About a year ago, I spotted this cool mechanical LEGO clock called the Time Twister. It was a pretty amazing build, recreating the segmented display of an LCD clock, entirely with LEGO parts. Well its builder, Hans Andersson is back with a new version – the Time Twister 2.

time twister 2 lego clock digits

The updated version of the clock has a more finished look than the original, more closely mimicking the style of an LED timepiece with a light-on-dark display.

time twister 2 lego clock mech

Mechanically, it looks different too, though the basic principles are the same. It’s built from LEGO blocks, Mindstorms NXT Controllers and servo mechanisms interconnected to gradually rotate and reveal segments of the digits which comprise the current time. Here, check it out in action:

Cool, no? I think so. Hans needs to figure out a way to mass-produce these – or at least sell an instruction kit along with a parts list. I would certainly love to have a clock this cool somewhere in my home or office – though the sound of the motors constantly whirring away might get on my nerves after a while. Nah, I’ll just buy some earplugs if I must.

Nintendo Unboxes its Own Wii U

The new Nintendo Wii U is coming to stores in North America on November 18th, but you can see exactly what you’ll be getting in the box thanks to the fine folks at Nintendo, who have decided to shoot their own early unboxing video, with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata doing the honors.

nintendo wii unboxing

The video is in Japanese, but has subtitles, and is easy to follow. It’s pretty crazy that the controller is almost as big as the console, and the power brick is still quite chunky as well. It sure would be nice if they could get the size down. Apple has proven it’s possible with the MacBook’s power supply, as has Asus, so why can’t everyone?

My favorite part of the video is the rubber gloves Iwata is wearing while unboxing the shiny black game system. Clearly, it’s gonna be a major fingerprint magnet – especially the controller. I wonder if they include a pair of gloves in the box.

Tesla Coil Fight: Two Men Enter, Two Men Get Electrocuted

I’ve seen some pretty awesome videos involving Tesla coils over the years, but I have to say this is my new favorite. This video was captured at the recent Belfast Festival at Queens, Ireland, and it involves a couple of dudes going all Raiden on each other, firing bolts of electricity at one another.

Check out the epic electric battle in the video clip below. (Note, there’s a little NSFW language from the audience.)

Pretty awesome, eh? I’m just glad it didn’t start raining during the performance.
