TWC TV App For Android Updated With On Demand Content

We reported last month that Time Warner Cable will be updating its TWC TV app to offer live TV as well as on demand content. The update was expected soon after Cablevision had announced that its Optimum for iPad app will be offering customers the facility to watch live TV wherever they might be. TWC confirmed today that by next Tuesday they will be releasing a “serious” update to the TWC TV app for Android.

Customers will be able to access over 4,000 TV shows and movies on demand as well as watch live TV. The update will also bring On Demand support for devices running Android 2.2 or higher, meaning that the app now supports video playback on 98% of all Android devices. The cable provider’s customers will also have out-of-home access over any Wi-Fi connection to live TV from a dozen or so entertainment, sports and news channels as well as 1,100 On Demand movies and TV shows. Time Warner Cable says that the new app update for Android is scheduled for release on the Google Play Store on the 14th of May.

Stairwell Illusion Will Make You Question The Law Of Physics

After watching the following video of what seems to be a never-ending set of stairs that is located in a stairwell at the Rochester Institute of Technology, we’re not sure exactly if it’s a exceptionally well-done video prank, or if there really is something to these stairs that cause its climbers to go appear to go nowhere whether they climb or descend them.

The continuous staircase illusion was created by architect Rafael Nelson Aboganda and is somehow able to make it seem like you haven’t moved to a new floor when you reach the bottom or the top of the stairs. Apparently, these stairs are well known at the Rochester Institute of Technology as a number of people interviewed during the video segment have joked saying they have challenged friends to race them to the top of the stairs.

YouTube Trends Map Displays Most Popular Videos Based On Region, Gender, Age

YouTube Trends Map Displays Most Popular Videos Based On Region, Gender, Age

If you’re a regular YouTube viewer, you’ll know how difficult it is to stumble onto the next big viral video as there are just way too many videos to comb through on a regular basis. That’s why YouTube is taking the initiative to help make it easier for its users to know what is currently trending in their neck of the woods through its new Trends Map.

YouTube’s Trends Map uses regional metrics in order to populate the map of the U.S., which is the first map the service will roll out for now. The Trends Map can be tweaked in order to view what specific genders and age groups are enjoying these days on YouTube, although as of now, it looks like the trailer for the sixth season of HBO’s True Blood is dominating the charts in terms of of the most shares, while the most views is currently going to a video of a water polo player who ends up being a sore loser. The new Trends Map is certainly a fun little tool that we could see using on a regular basis to see what has been deemed to be a viral hit in the U.S.

Saints Row 4 Has Us Playing As A Butt-Kicking President With Superpowers

Saints Row 4 is coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on August 20 which Volition has already given us a glimpse of some of the crazy pre-order bonuses we can expect from the game a few weeks ago. The pre-order bonuses aren’t the only completely crazy thing about Saints Row 4 as Volition has just released a new trailer for the game, and you apparently play as the President of the United States of ‘Merica.

In the new “Meet the President” trailer, we see your character is not only the leader of ‘Merica, but also has a number of superhuman powers that allow him to perform some impressive feats of strength, run ridiculously fast and leap higher than most people can spit. Oh, yea – he also beats up a lot of citizens in the game, that is, when he’s not fighting illegal aliens. (more…)

These Masks Can Give You Superhuman Hearing, Sight

These Masks Can Give You Superhuman Hearing, Sight

The idea of having superhuman powers is one I’m sure many of you can relate to as being able to fly, superhuman strength and invisibility are some of the powers you’ll probably want to have. But a group of students at the Royal College of Art in London created a set of masks that offer as close as an experience to having superhuman powers as you’ll probably get in your lifetime.

The two masks that were developed cover certain portions of the wearer’s face, the first one being worn over the ears, mouth and nose, while the other is worn over the eyes. The first prototype uses a directional microphone that makes it possible to hear isolated sounds within an environment filled with ambient noise. The second mask uses a camera to capture video to then send it to a computer which can apply a number of effects in real-time, which the wearer can then view. (more…)

Oculus Rift Developers Make A Guillotine Simulator Called Disunion

Oculus Rift Developers Make A Guillotine Simulator Called Disunion

We’ve seen a number of games modded to work on the Oculus Rift over the past couple of weeks with Mirror’s EdgeTeam Fortress 2 and Skyrim being among the most popular games. But one of the cooler, and probably the most cruel, piece of software that was developed for the Oculus Rift has got to be Disunion.

Disunion is a guillotine simulator developed by André Berlemont, Erkki Turmmal and Morten Brunbjerg which was developed in only two days and offers its user (or victim) a first-person view of what it’s like to get your head cut off. Their demo video not only shows brief glimpses of Disunion in action, but the team also takes the demonstration one step further by chopping at the neck of the person wearing the Oculus Rift. Dead Space 3 Plasma Cutter Working Replica Can Fire Real Lasers

EA’s Dead Space 3 may have come and gone, but one thing fans of the series will never forget is just how awesome the Plasma Cutter is as it can effectively cut up a necromorpth with very little effort. That’s why we absolutely had to feature Patrick Priebe’s working replica of Dead Space’s Plasma Cutter.

Priebe’s Plasma Cutter working replica uses a total of five laser beams – three green lasers to aim and two blue, 1,500 milliwatt beams to burn stuff with. It took Priebe a total of 200 hours to build his Plasma Cutter, and as you can see in the video above, it can shift between horizontal and vertical orientations and can even be reloaded with energy packs. The blue 1,500 milliwatt beam can be seen burning holes in a piece of wood and through a plastic bag, although we’re sure it isn’t strong enough to do any serious damage to a person.

Google Glass Parodied On Saturday Night Live

Now that the Explorer Edition of Google Glass has been shipped out to a select number of people, you might have bumped into someone wearing them at a party, social event or maybe even on the streets. Using Google Glass may seem more difficult to those who haven’t used the wearable computer than those who have become accustomed to it, which is exactly what the writers at Saturday Night Live decided to focus on in one of its skits this past weekend.

The “Google Glass” wearer that was featured during Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update segment is named Randall Meeks, who is played by SNL cast member Fred Armisen. During the segment, Meeks demonstrates just how “easy” it is to use Google Glass, although his ability to use the device is thwarted through his own inability to use it properly. During Meeks’ conversation with Seth Meyers, he spends the majority of his time yelling voice commands at his pair of Google Glass, with one of those commands accidentally outing a private video he probably shouldn’t have been watching while he was demonstrating the device.

Eric Schmidt Says YouTube Has Left Conventional TV Far Behind

Eric Schmidt Says YouTube Has Left Conventional TV Far Behind

There have been many arguments for and against this statement, however fact and numbers are hard to refute. Recently, YouTube sailed past the board for a billion unique monthly visitors and Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt believes that internet video has left conventional television far behind. He says that YouTube’s numbers will only keep going higher as the service becomes available in a number of third world countries, by then the world’s most used video sharing site will amass multiple billion active users each month. These remarks were made during a presentation to advertisers in New York City.

Eric Schmidt also clarifies that internet video isn’t a full blown replacement for conventional television. It is an entirely new and different thing which requires that its users think about how they’re going to use it, in order to maximize their user satisfaction with the service. YouTube’s global head of content added that “TV is one-way. YouTube talks back.” Many will agree with its statement, as YouTube certainly does foster engagement as opposed to television which offers reach for advertisers. YouTube has recently been shifting towards new and exciting projects, one such project is the Comedy Week that brings together big name stars for comedy routines and skits that will be broadcasted from Los Angeles.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist Bringing Back Spies vs. Mercs Multiplayer Mode

Ubisoft has kept the Splinter Cell: Blacklist content flowing ever since they announced the game would be delayed until August 20. We recently saw a gameplay video highlighting the Ghost, Panther and Assault play styles as well as a a video highlighting what makes the Wii U version of the game so special. Today, Ubisoft has released another video which not only confirms Spies vs. Mercs multiplayer will make its triumphant return to the Splinter Cell series, but it also shows the mode in action.

As it seems to be the major theme in Splinter Cell: Blacklist, the use of light and shadow also seems to play an important role in Spies vs. Mercs mode. The video shows us a number of tools both sides will use in order to complete their objective, with the Spies being able to use smoke grenades and a cloaking ability, while the Mercenaries will rely on their motion tracker, flashlight as well as an explodable drone.
