Getting someone to smile for a photo when they’re not feeling chipper can be rather difficult. If you own this digital mirror, then you won’t need to persuade your subject as it’ll make them smile for you.

The digital mirror was created using a large LCD display along with a camera installed just above the screen that is used to capture footage of someone’s face. Xbox Video Launched On The Web, Windows Phone App Coming Soon

Xbox Video Launched On The Web, Windows Phone App Coming Soon

Microsoft today launched its Xbox Video service on the web, prior to launching the service’s app for Windows Phone devices. Just like the Xbox Video app for Windows 8.1, the web version will offer users access to TV shows and movies through video.xbox.com. The web version of Xbox Video looks quite like the Xbox Music’s web version. The service has actually been developed to replace Microsoft’s outdated Zune video service, which no longer allows customers to access media content.

Through the web version, users can stream TV shows and movies in the browser itself, though Microsoft’s Silverlight plug-in is going to be required. Content already purchased through the Windows 8.1 app or through Xbox One console will be available for streaming via the web version immediately. Users can also purchase content through Xbox Video on the web, the purchased content will then automatically and immediately become available for streaming through the Windows 8.1 app and Xbox One. While the service supports HD playback on both the console and Windows 8.1, unfortunately Xbox Video’s web version doesn’t support it. The Windows Phone app that is going to be launched soon will also not support HD quality playback. Microsoft was expected to launch the Windows Phone app alongside the web version, but it appears that the app isn’t ready for primetime just yet.

Amazon Instant Video Launched In Japan

Amazon Instant Video Launched In Japan

Amazon Instant Video has been launched in Japan today, it offers movies and TV shows for streaming, download rental and outright purchase. Customers can choose titles from a library containing over 26,000 movies and TV shows, out of which around 15,000 titles are available in HD. Content from local major studios and TV networks is available as well through the service. The launch comes at a time when the Kindle Fire HDX tablet is also making its way into Japan, with Amazon offering customers a 2,000 yen coupon to get them to try the service on their new tablet.

By launching Instant Video in Japan, Amazon joins rivals Apple, Google and Hulu. Netflix, which is already quite big in other parts of the world, has no presence in the Japanese market as of now. Amazon also goes up against local operators such as NotTV, Tsutaya TV and GyaO Corp. Pricing structure varies for newer and older titles. For example old films like Good Will Hunting can be rented for 100 yen, for 24 hours. Newer films like Monsters University cost $5 to rent for one day, and $25 if they user wants to purchase it. Local broadcasters Fuji TV, NHK as well as Shochiku Co. and Toho Co. are Amazon’s initial content partners in Japan. Titles from Hollywood studios are obviously included as well.

Yahoo Signs Katie Couric As Global Anchor

Yahoo Signs Katie Couric As Global Anchor

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had made a number of bold decisions ever since she took over as leader of the company, decisions such as the $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr and several other multi-million dollar acquisitions. The company also has a new logo now and has refreshed the look and feel of many of its services. Under Mayer, Yahoo continues to push into the media landscape and the company has now signed someone to become the face of that push. Mayer announced through a blog post that Yahoo has signed Katie Couric as its “global anchor,” and that she will start early next year.

Katie Couric is a well known media personality, already having worked at ABC News, NBC and CBS. While she will cover “the world’s most interesting stories and newsmakers” as Yahoo’s global anchor, she will also continue her daily talk show on ABC called “Katie.” Though there have been rumors that perhaps ABC won’t renew the show for a third season. Mayer’s blog post doesn’t detail exactly what else Couric will be tasked with at Yahoo, but she’ll most likely be on the front page, as the CEO says Couric is going to be “the face of Yahoo News.” Couric joins other media personalities Yahoo has already picked up, personalities like David Pogue, Megan Liberman and Matt Bai. Mayer says that the company is investing in bringing its users “the absolute best content and video experiences available,” and that Yahoo is just getting started.
