7,000 Post-it notes used in a Mario stop-motion video

So what will you do when you’ve got  lots of time to spare and thousands of post-it notes right in front of you? Well, YouTube sensation and aspiring filmmaker Zach King a.k.a. FinalCutKing decided to bring the Mario game to life by reportedly using roughly 7,000 Post-it notes or sticky notes to create a stop-motion video animation. The video is quite short, roughly one and a half minutes, although King said that it took a ninja-like patience to post and shoot the stop-motion video.

Judging from the video above, you will see good old Mario traversing through the walls like a pro, jumping over a clock like crazy. And oh there’s Pac-Man too, eating ghosts and unfortunately King’s poster on the wall as well. But since it’s Mario’s show, it took three Tetris blocks to bring Pac-Man down. Anyway, the video is fun and amusing. Perhaps you too can come up with your own stop-video animation as well. Cheers!

Metal Gear Solid Rising Official Gameplay Footage

Konami just released the official Metal Gear Solid Rising gameplay footage that explains how the controls work and what the player can do. If you’ve been following E3 for the past couple of years, you probably know that Metal Gear Solid Rising (MGS Rising) features a 3D-engine that allows the player to cut any target objects in a realistic way. This is typically very difficult as most polygonal objects in games are normally solid and hollow. Konami did a great job with this.

On the surface, the game itself is a fancy beat-them-up not unlike God of War, Heavenly Sword and other titles of that sort, except that MGS Rising features its own fancy combo hits and finish. Raiden, the main character from Metal Gear Solid 2, was a little boo-booed when he popped into the series (well, it’s just hard to replace Solid Snake…) but this may be the title that will make him enter the video game Hall of Fame. What do you think? Is Konami’s Raiden character ready for a main role?

Samsung Galaxy S3 “Intelligence” commercial goes live

It’s one thing for Samsung to say that its Samsung Galaxy S3 is designed for humans, and it’s completely another thing to reveal the features of the device itself. If you are still undecided about which phone to choose, perhaps this advert will finally put all your questions to rest. Samsung has released the latest advert for the Galaxy S3. The two-minute video, entitled “Intelligence” attempts to hammer the nail in the head by highlighting the GS3′s best and nifty features. The first feature shown is Smart Stay.

As you know, Smart Stay tracks your eyeballs to ensure that the display stays on when you’re looking at it. Next is S-Voice, a feature that’s based on Vlingo’s popular voice assistant app and is kinda like Siri in a way. Then there’s the Smart Alert feature that will give you a vibrating nudge that will notify you of any calls and messages you missed, and Direct Call which allows the user to make calls automatically by lifting the GS3 close to your ear. Last but not the least is the Social Tag feature that will enable you to tag your friends in photos. In case you missed our review of the Galaxy S3, you check it out here.

YouTube now used more often as a reliable source for news [Research]

Do you find yourself relying on YouTube too much for news? Before you condemn yourself as a self-confessed YouTube junkie, it seems that you’re not the only one addicted to the video-sharing website. According to a report published on Monday by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, more and more viewers are now turning to YouTube for eyewitness videos, especially in times of major events and natural disasters. The report was based on a 15-month research and it revealed that events, such as the Japanese tsunami last year and the turmoil in the Middle East, were among the most-watched videos.

While the research revealed that news on television still holds the record for viewership, YouTube’s growing digital environment especially in the area of journalism is even more interesting. “There’s a new form of video journalism on this platform,” said Amy Mitchell, Deputy Director of the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. “It’s a form in which the relationship between news organizations and citizens is more dynamic and more multiverse than we’ve seen in most other platforms before.”

Google+ Hangouts get live captions

Google is looking to make Google+ more accessible to users with hearing-impairments. Today, they announced a new app that makes Google+ Hangouts more accessible to hearing-impaired users at the National Association of the Deaf’s annual conference in Louisville, KY. The app, named Hangout Captions, does exactly what its name suggests, creates a chat transcript for the deaf while in a Hangout on Google+.

Hangout Captions allows two options of transcription. The first is professional transcription through StreamText, and the second is basic transcription which you do yourself by typing on the keyboard. I am sure that machine-powered transcription is on the way, but for now the two options should suffice. Naomi Black, the leading developer for Hangout Captions, has posted a video which describes the functionality of the app. Kudos to Google for making its social network more accessible to those with handicaps.
