We’d heard murmurs about Vdio being eventually launched over in the United Kingdom, but, aside from that, details still remained relatively scarce. Well, now we have official word that Rdio’s planning to make it its own platform for streaming à la carte video content — and, frankly, it’s no surprise given that Vdio’s creator, Janus Friis, is the music service’s own co-founder. For starters, Vdio will offer an array of on-demand movies and TV series, including new productions such as Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, Skyfall and many more, plus there are also small-screen hits like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Homeland— these shows, similar to how they operate on other services, will be available to view the day after they air. The only caveat is Vdio’s currently only open to Rdio Unlimited subscribers in the US and UK, and mum’s the word on when, or if, Rdio plans to bring its new video streaming service to a broader audience on the web.

It’s been nearly two months since Time Warner said it’d start streaming on-demand content on its TWC TV website, but the giant cable provider announced today that customers can now (finally) start enjoying the à la carte service on their desktop or laptop. Similar to its offering on iOS, Time Warner Cable subscribers will have access to more than 4,000 TV shows and movies from various networks and studios, which, according to the company, also includes “certain” subscription-based programming by the likes of Showtime and HBO. Just like the rest of Time Warner’s web TV service, the recently announced on-demand content is also compatible with both Mac and PC (sorry, Linux), and, naturally, that includes support for some versions of all major browsers — including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

It just wouldn’t be CES without IOGEAR showing off new jet-black wireless streaming devices, and today it’s unveiling the lovingly named “Wireless 5×2 HD Matrix,” or GWHDMS52. The two-piece set is capable of streaming uncompressed full HD (1080p) content, including 3D video and 5.1-channel audio, from anything in your main entertainment setup to another TV up to 100 ft away, using the WHDI standard. You plug everything into the main box, which serves as the transmitter — it has one component, one USB and four HDMI inputs, with one HDMI-out to serve the primary display. The receiver box has its own HDMI-out for the device you’re streaming to, as well as a USB-out for controlling whatever’s plugged into the corresponding port at the other end, like a computer. If you hadn’t guessed already, the setup is a matrix switcher, meaning the receiver will pull from any source hooked up to the transmitter, regardless of what’s being watched on the primary TV. The Wireless 5×2 HD Matrix is due to launch in March at a price of $399.95.

Sky’s Now TV service is continuing its uphill battle against the armies of Netflix and Lovefilm today, setting up camp in Roku’s streaming boxes. Matching its Xbox 360 launch offer, you’ll be able to try the service for 30 days without charge, but it’s added another enticing deal for the Roku launch — pay a reduced price of £8.99 for the first three months before the regular £15 per month fee kicks in. As well as boasting its exclusive Harry Potter catalogue suitable for a holiday marathon, we’ve been told Sky Sports will finally be coming to Now TV “in a few months.” Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts and Sky Living will also eventually be added to the service, but there’s still not even a loose date for those. Now TV might not reach all the hardware it intended to before the end of the year, but at least with this latest launch, Roku can start showing Sky it was worth all that cash.

The Kickstarter success known as Simple.TV had let it be known that units would start showing up at backers’ doorsteps around October 10th-15th, and now those who happily invested on the project will be pleased to know the company’s doing just as it promised. Meanwhile, folks who were late to the Kickstarter shindig can still grab a simplified video streamer for themselves via the outfit’s site, where a Simple.TV Limited, Premier and Lifetime can be found for $149, $199 and $299, respectively.
