Virgin Mobile aims at entry-level with $79.99 PCD Chaser

If you’re still rocking a flip phone and want to make the jump to a smarter category, then Virgin Mobile might have the inexpensive phone that’ll help ease the transition. It today announced the PCD Chaser, costing just $79.99 without a contract commitment that can be used on the network’s unlimited $35 a month plans. The Chaser comes with a 3.2-inch screen, 800Mhz processor, and a 3-megapixel camera, all running on Android 2.3, Gingerbread.

Sure, it’s not going to set the world on fire, but it’s an affordable entry-level smartphone that should be suited to first time users of Android. The price certainly makes it attractive too thanks to the lack of a two-year contract, so you could always jump to one of Virgin Mobile’s other phones once you’ve outgrown the Chaser. Virgin has outfitted the handset with a number of bundled apps to get your started, including Facebook, Twitter, and Virgin Mobile Live.

The company says the smartphone should be available on its website right now, although Virgin notes that the phone will begin rolling out to retail stores throughout September and October. Looks like the phone has already proved popular though, as it’s showing as out of stock on Virgin’s website. Head over here to keep an eye out for the next wave if this sounds like the entry-level phone for you.

Canon EOS C300 used in world’s first airplane-exclusive film shoot

This week Canon is proud to let the world know that the brand new Canon EOS C300 has been used to film inside confined areas – that is to say, used in the past few weeks to film the worlds first-eve movie filmed entirely on airplanes. With the device they were able to film at an altitude of 35,000 feel across 28,000 miles and three continents in a movie called “Departure Date.” This movie stars Ben Feldman and Nicky Whelan as they take a flight together from Sydney to Los Angeles.

The Canon EOS C300 played a pivotal role in capturing the movie which has another product tie-in with the airplane being specifically a Virgin Atlantic flight. This movie also has the lovable trip of Philip Baker Hall, Janeane Garofalo, and Luis Guzman in it, and has already premiered in short at the LA Film Festival on the 17th of June. It wasn’t revealed until now the full details of the shoot.

Director of photography Doug Chamberlain spoke up about filming the movie with the equipment of choice:

“I knew it would be a challenge to figure out how to get it done just in terms of lighting, mobility, electrical power, and airport security. I looked at the Canon EOS C300 digital cinema camera and was immediately convinced that it’s the perfect tool for shooting ‘Departure Date.’ The EOS C300 is a very production-friendly camera.” – Chamberlain

This movie had Chamberlain using the Canon EOS C300 with PL-mount compact prime lenses and the camera’s long recording time options to make it all work out well. Have a peek at our Canon EOS C300 timeline below to find out more about the camera and how you’ll be using it for your own film and photo adventures soon!

Engadget’s smartphone buyer’s guide: summer 2012 edition

Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide summer 2012 edition

Despite the sweltering heat waves, our spirits are high at Engadget, and for good reason: it’s time for our summer edition of the smartphone buyer’s guide. Here, you’ll find our top recommendations for the best smartphones across several US carriers, along with the best QWERTY and budget alternatives. In many ways, it’s now easier than ever to find a world-class smartphone, but unless you’ve developed a strong brand preference, choosing one is likely more difficult than ever before. It’s no secret that the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III have firmly cemented themselves as the premier smartphones of the day, but if you’re torn between the two, we’ll reveal our preference in this latest installment.

Summertime also brought a bit of a shock, as Microsoft revealed that Windows Phone 8 apps won’t be compatible with the current generation of Windows Phone hardware. For this reason, we’ve excluded all Windows Phone handsets from consideration in the latest buyer’s guide. While the future of Microsoft’s mobile platform looks incredibly bright, a purchase now would guarantee obsolescence in the short-term. Instead, all prospective Windows Phone purchasers must wait for the next generation of handsets to become available — you’ll regret it otherwise.

Naturally, there is no shortage of rumors surrounding the next Apple iPhone, and given the handset’s current lack of LTE connectivity, the iPhone 4S is certainly showing its age. While cautious purchasers may choose to bide their time, the iPhone remains top-notch in many other respects, and its arrival at a number of prepaid carriers brought a breath of fresh air to an otherwise stagnant environment.

If you’re curious to see how it all unfolded — and we know you are — join us after the break, where we round up the very best smartphones of the season.

Kyocera Rise linked to Sprint and Virgin Mobile in leak, clue vanishes in a hot minute

Kyocera Rise linked to Sprint and Virgin in phantom leak

Kyocera has already committed to launching the Hydro with Boost Mobile next month, but the Rise is still the bridesmaid, and not a bride — at least, not until a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it leak that emerged this weekend. A Twitter update by EV leaks has the Android 4.0 QWERTY slider attached to Sprint and Virgin Mobile, with a press photo of the Sprint version as evidence. Unfortunately, that’s about all we’ll get to see in the near future: the post and the whole account ceased to exist not long after they first appeared, which makes permanent proof a little hard to come by other than through an Unwired View recap. Still, we already know the Rise is destined for CDMA providers in the US, and Sprint’s longstanding partnership with Kyocera makes the Rise an obvious candidate as the carrier’s next on-the-cheap messaging device — the image may just give our hunches some meaning.

Virgin Mobile USA opening flagship Chicago store, selling ‘culture’ on top of phones

DNP Virgin Mobile USA opening flagship Chicago store, selling 'culture,' phones

Virgin Mobile USA is adding actual bricks and mortar to its primary selling channels — the internet and box stores — but said that a new flagship Chicago store will not just be about the phones. The location has been set up like a casual, music-themed lounge, where customers can recline while testing devices and salespeople will run workshops on subjects like apps and how to install them. The Sprint-owned company will add 14 more locations in the city by summer’s end and hopes to use the launch as an archetype for key stores in its other major market cities. The concept sounds a bit like a certain other starkly designed iChain — but the rock ‘n’ roll decor is pure Branson.

High-tech Virgin America again rated top airline

If you want to fly the friendly skies in the best airline possible, Sir Richard Branson’s fleet of state-of-the-art aircraft might be the ticket you’re looking for. His Virgin America line was rated the number one domestic airline in the US for the fifth year in a row. Could it be the free in-flight video games?

Maybe it’s the one-of-a-kind mood lighting within the cabin, or it could be the touch-screen food and drink ordering system. All of these factors, along with of course the fact that Virgin America has just about the most modern fleet in the country, are what caused Travel + Leisure magazine to pick the nascent carrier, yet again, for its coveted top spot.

“We are honored to have won top marks from Travel + Leisure readers for the fifth year in a row,” said Virgin America President and CEO David Cush. “There are many awards that rank airlines that are paid or that include only the largest airlines, so it is a real distinction to win the top quality ranking in an independent survey of thousands of some of the most discerning travelers out there. As we mark our fifth year anniversary this summer, this award is a testament to our unique product,” the airline said in a statement.
