OLPC And Vivitar Unveil New Android XO Tablets

OLPC And Vivitar Unveil New Android XO TabletsBack in 2013, One Laptop Per Child and Vivitar unveiled their first collaborative efforts in the form of the Android XO tablet, and now it looks like both companies are back again with new Android XO tablets for 2014 which will come in either the 7” variety of the 10” variety, with the prices pegged at $150 and $200 respectively. The tablets are aimed at students and will feature educational software as well as a durable build that will help keep the tablet running even if it has been bumped around or dropped.

In terms of hardware specs, both tablets will feature a 1024×600 display, meaning that sharpness and pixel density in the 10” model will not be as good compared to the 7” one. It will be powered by quad-core processors which are faster than last year’s model, and will be accompanied by 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, and with the 7” model expected to feature around 7 hours of battery life. The difference between the 7” and 10” models would be the fact that the 10” model will feature GPS and a slightly larger battery at 12 hours of usage.

Vivitar has also announced optional accessories, such as wireless keyboards, a digital microscope with up to 300x magnification, and a digital telescope with up to 200x magnification, with the tablet’s screen used as a viewfinder.

Vivitar announces new tablets for families at CES 2013

Vivitar announced at CES that it intends to release three different tablets this spring that are designed specifically for children and their families. One of the tablets is the XO Learning Tablet that the One Laptop per Child Association mentioned earlier this week at CES. That particular tablet will have curated educational content and support bilingual families.

The XO Learning Tablet will be offered at major US retailers starting with Walmart. The tablet has a seven-inch screen, runs the Android operating system, and is based on the new XO Learning System software. That software is a child centric learning program covering ages 3 to 12 that allows users to choose dreams that have to do with professions they can be when they grow up.

Vivitar also announced a new Camelio Tablet that will offer add-on personality kits. These personality kits will allow owners to customize the style of the seven-inch Android tablet using their favorite licensed characters. The tablet will be available with kits that have characters for elementary school kids all the way up to kids in the teen/tween stage.

The kits will include a tablet case along with a card that has a code that unlocks branded content such as wallpapers, widgets, music, and books. Each of these personality kits for the tablet will cost $20-$30 and feature superheroes and sports brands among other things. Vivitar will also launch a trio of seven-inch Android tablets that are branded with Hello Kitty, Barbie, and Monster High. The tablets will include branded home screens, wallpapers, photo editing, contacts, and other content.

In addition to announcing availability for the XO tablet, Vivitar is outing the new 7-inch Camelio slate at CES. Like the XO, it has a family-friendly bent, with optional $20-$30 “personality kits” that customize the user experience with themes like Thomas the Tank Engine. Vivitar had the slate on hand — and even provided approximate pricing and availability info — but it’s mum on specs for the moment, as it still considers this device to be in the prototype phase. About that MSRP: it will be about $129, with a release date in late spring.

We spent a few minutes playing with the Camelio, and though there were no pre-loaded kiddie apps or personality kits to play with, it’s clear that this device is made for the younger set. The slate isn’t incredibly thin, but its rounded edges and textured backing make for a grippable design that looks ready to withstand a few drops. The 7-inch screen doesn’t dazzle with bright images; we’d guess the resolution is a standard 1,024 x 600. When the device ships, expect it to run Android 4.2. At least on the version we saw today, there’s not as much of a personalized skin as you’d expect with a child-friendly tablet. That’s likely because most of the customization comes via the optional theme kits. Each of those kits includes a case for the tablet along with a code that unlocks wallpapers, widgets and other branded content.

Along the edges are the standard volume toggle, power button and headphone jack, along with a microSD card slot and a micro-USB port. This is a WiFi-enabled device, and Vivitar said battery life is rated for seven to nine hours. Check out our hands-on gallery, and check back for a video soon.
