Vizio Co-Star update brings enhanced Google Play experience, boosts performance

DNP Vizio Costar update lets you get Google Play content, sync purchases

Vizio has released an update that adds enhanced Google Play features and a performance boost to the affordable and adorable Vizio Co-Star. Owners of the tiny Google TV box can now buy or rent directly from the Google Play Store and sync purchases made on other devices. There’s also a handy new search feature that scours the Google Play store, live TV and video apps like Netflix and Amazon to make sure you never miss an episode of your favorite TV show. In addition, the update promises faster menus and navigation, enhanced HDMI stability and improved Netflix performance. Looks like $99 buys quite a nice little Google TV box, as long as you can live with that awkward remote, right?

It does not matter whether you want to upgrade your living room TV or bedroom TV, Vizio does seem to have a little something for everyone. Not only that, there are also smaller screen size classes of 39” (E390), 32” (E320), 29” (E291) and 24” (E241) LED units available for you to choose from to suit your budget and needs.

A slim outer bezel makes Vizio’s latest range look nicer than ever before, and there is also a high-definition 1080p LED screen that reveals richer, more vivid colors, while advanced local dimming technology delivers deeper blacks and brighter whites for overall stunning picture quality. Depending on the E-Series model of your choice, you can also check out an ultra-thin profile that measures under 2” thin, while using Razor LED backlighting technology.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 6, 2012

Welcome to the SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: Presidential Edition. The world of tech didn’t come to a halt just because we needed to go out and vote, so in case you missed it, here’s the big news from the day. We learned today that HTC and Verizon will be holding a press event on November 13, and it’s there that we’re expecting to get our first official introduction to the HTC DROID DNA. Speaking of HTC, the company gave us its earnings for October 2012 today, and they aren’t looking all that great. Halo 4 officially launched today, but it isn’t without its share of server problems, and physical Google Wallet cards have been confirmed on a Google support page.

We heard new rumors of an Xbox Surface again today, and AT&T announced that it will begin offering the Nokia Lumia 920 on November 9 for a mere $99. Apple OS X 10.9 has been popping up around the web today, and Opera has been updated to version 12.10, which brings support for high definition displays. Amazon has introduced a new monthly billing option for Prime, and even though you’ll be paying more than subscribing annually, it might be a better idea for some than plopping down one big lump sum.

A sequel to the classic game Elite is looking for funding on Kickstarter, while Instagram says that Hurricane Sandy was probably its biggest event ever. Vizio unveiled a new line up of HDTVs and sound bars for the holidays, while Valve officially kicked off its limited-access Steam for Linux beta today. Ford and Microsoft had reason to gloat today with the 5 millionth Sync-equipped vehicle, and EA & DICE are celebrating 10 years of Battlefield with free copies of Battlefield 1942 on Origin.

Did you photograph your ballot and put it on the Internet today? Did you know that’s an illegal thing to do? Google was awarded a new patent that means something interesting for Google Glass, and Fisker was hit pretty hard by Hurricane Sandy. Microsoft has confirmed it will be focusing on Skype instead of Windows Live Messenger, and we heard that PlayStation: The Official Magazine will be going dark later this year. Finally tonight, Chris Davies explains why Apple will kick Intel to the curb if it can, and we tell you why you should probably wait on the all of the Miracast accessories for now. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

Four new soundbars from Vizio, just in time for the holidays

Four new sound bars from Vizio, just in time for the holidays

If you found the new lineup of Vizio TVs announced last month interesting, then you might want to check out some potential accessories. Vizio hopes that soundbars will be at the top of that list with four new models available online and in stores in time for the holidays. The line is divided in half between the E-Series and the M-Series, with the extra $20 that the M-Series costs buying you a small display and controls up top. Within each series, you have the option to pay an extra $100 for a wireless subwoofer. All four of them do feature SRS TruVolume and TruSurround, though. The full release is available after the break, but sadly doesn’t include as many details as you might want, so you may way to check out Vizio’s website for more.

Vizio unveils holiday lineup of HDTVs and sound bars

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Vizio has announced its new lineup of HDTVs and audio equipment. More specifically, the company has officially announced the LED-lit2 E-Series line of HDTVs and four new sound bars. Included in the lineup is the recently-released E-Series 60-inch class Razor LED Smart TV.

The lineup also includes the company’s flagship E-Series 70-inch class Razor LED Smart TV, and new 2.0 and 2.1 E-Series and M-Series sound bars. Vizio has pretty much loaded up their holiday lineup, which include HDTVs from basic 24-inch units, all the way up to 70-inch Smart TVs in order to cater to every consumer.

Vizio’s Smart TVs (which come in flavors of 70”, 60”, 50”, 42”, and 32”) feature built-in WiFi, as well as a handful of VIZIO-exclusive apps and instant access to streaming content from services like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, VUDU, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and Pandora, as well as social media content such as Facebook and Twitter.

Vizio’s sound bars start at $99 for the 2.0 E-Series model, and go all the way up to $229 for the 2.1 M-Series unit. Vizio’s basic HDTVs start just $199 for the 24-inch model, while $399 will get you the company’s 39-inch LED model. Vizio Smart TVs start at $299 for the 32-inch variant, and they go all the way up to $1,999 for the 70-inch Razor Smart TV.

Vizio AIO PCs Get Touchscreen Upgrade for Windows 8

Back during CES 2012, I had a chance to go hands-on with Vizio’s sexy new all-in-one PCs, and I was quite impressed with the industrial design, build quality and overall value at the time. With the impending release of Microsoft Windows 8, Vizio has announced two new AIO PCs with full 1080p touchscreen displays.

vizio aio touch pc 1

This only makes sense, given Microsoft’s touch-friendly user interface that’s the front doorway to Windows 8. What’s really cool is that these are actual capacitive-touch displays, allowing for full 10-finger input. I personally have an HP Touchsmart that used the older infrared sensing tech, and multitouch was limited to just 2 fingers – and not so good at that. This sort of display will provide the type of swiping, stretching and pinching interactions you’re used to on tablets and smartphones.

The systems are available with 3rd-generation Intel Core CPUs, and NVIDIA Kepler-Class GeForce GPUs for speedy graphic rendering. The 24″ comes with a Core i3-3110M running at 2.4GHz and 4GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive, while the 27″ comes with a speedy quad core i7-3630M, also at 2.4GHz and 8GB RAM. The 27″ system bumps up to a 1TB hard drive and has a small 32GB SSD built-in to cache OS and speed up the system even more. Both have GigE ports and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Each has dual HDMI inputs for connecting external devices like a PS3, Xbox 360 or a satellite receiver, and a 2.1 sound system with an included 6-watt subwoofer that doubles as the system’s power supply. Best of all, Vizio continues to ship their machines with Microsoft Signature – which ensures that you only get the core operating system and anti-virus software – with no pre-installed crapware you’d just have to remove anyway.

The Vizio All-in-One Touch PCs start at $999 and top out at $1539 (USD), and available in both 24″ and 27″ screen sizes. If you’re looking for an alternative to a pricey iMac, you should definitely check these out. They’re not yet available for pre-order, but should be in time for the 2012 holiday season. You’ll also be able to find select configurations at major retailers including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Amazon.com and MicrosoftStore.com.

Vizio adds 10-finger multitouch to All-in-One PCs for Windows 8

Vizio has updated its PC range with a pair of touch-capable all-in-ones, adding 10-finger multitouch to ready them for Windows 8, while also tweaking its notebooks with new trackpads. The new 24- and 27-inch All-in-One Touch PC models offer Intel Core processors, like their non-touch brethren we reviewed recently, as well as 1080p Full HD displays and 2.1 audio systems.

NVIDIA GeForce graphics using Kepler GPUs will be optional for some of the AIOs, while all will have SRS Premium Sound HD. The new models will be priced from $998, and they’ll be bloatware-free as Vizio has inked a deal with Microsoft to make them part of the Signature program.

As for the newly-updated notebooks and ultraportables, they’ll gain a new multitouch trackpad which supports all of Windows 8′s gestures and taps. Intel’s third-gen Core processors are inside, just as with the desktops, and there are options for 14-, 15.6-inch Think + Light Ultrabook and 15.6-inch Notebook depending on your bag capacity and bank balance.

The Vizio Thin + Light range kicks off at $849, while the 15.6-inch Full HD Notebook starts from $1,129. Like the AIO PC they’re part of the Signature program and so bloatware-free.

VIZIO Confirms Windows 8 across PC line-up

VIZIO has just confirmed that its holiday PC line-up will feature Windows 8 across the board. The flagship Windows 8 devices will be the 24″ and 27″ all-in-one PCs, but you can also expect Microsoft’s new operating system to show up on Vizio’s two Ultrabooks and in the company’s 14″ and 15.6″ laptops.

The VIZIO all-in-one had been shown earlier in the year at CES, and were launched in June. Until now, they came pre-installed with Windows 7, which is nice, but not as gesture-friendly as Windows 8. It is clear that the all-in-ones (AIO) PC are the heavy Windows 8 hitters in VIZIO’s line up. The laptops will benefit from trackpad gestures, but won’t be a game-changer in terms of user interaction.

The all-in-one PCs start at $998 and you can head to our previous coverage for more details and photos about them.

Vizio preps for Windows 8: all-in-one PCs get touchscreens, notebooks get ‘enhanced’ touchpads

Vizio preps for Windows 8 allinone PCs get touchscreens, notebooks get 'enhanced' touchpads

As is all the rage right now, Vizio is upgrading its lineup to support Windows 8’s more touch-centric UI. The company’s 24-inch and 27-inch all-in-one PCs will receive touch panels, resulting in a price bump to $998 for the base 24-incher with Ivy Bridge and Kepler internals, 1920 x 1080 display and 500GB hard drive. Meanwhile, Vizio’s Ultrabooks — both the 14-inch and 15.6-inch models — and its heftier 15.6-inch Full HD notebook will all get “enhanced multi-gesture touchpads” that will allow exactly the same swipes, taps and pinches as a touchscreen. These laptops will start at $849 for the smaller Ultrabook and $1,129 for the notebook. Expect the whole lot to arrive as part of the late October crush.

Vizio has just announced their latest Smart TV, which is a 60” Razor LED display that will definitely be priced to please – after all, we are looking at a $999.99 price tag. Of course, there are other sizes in the collection as well, which will be priced differently, and we will also look at those, but for now, the 60” model will be the one that is under the proverbial spotlight. In fact, the newly designed E-Series 60” Razor LED Smart TV will deliver an ultra-thin, slim-frame design, touting a brilliant 1080p Full HD LED quality as well as the inclusion of Vizio Internet Apps. All of that under a sub-$1,000 price point? It sure as heck sounds like Christmas has come early for those who are shopping around for a new TV!

The 60” Razor LED Smart TV will be available via online sources as well as select shelves at Costco Wholesale, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Amazon.com, Target, BJ’s Wholesale, ebay.com, VIZIO.com and other retailers if you are interested in introducing a new member to your living room.

Matt McRae, Chief Technology Officer, Vizio, said, “The new E-Series units, which are the first of many large-size VIZIO models, give consumers access to great technology on an even bigger scale. The larger units provide more screen space with a narrower border around the picture, allowing consumers to get the most out of the crystal-clear Razor LED picture for a more immersive, Wi-Fi enabled experience.”

What are some of the technologies found underneath the hood? We are looking at the latest technologies including Vizio Internet Apps with WIFI, so that one can access the likes of Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, VUDU, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Pandora, Facebook and Twitter, a 120Hz refresh rate, auto-adjusting brightness, and SRS StudioSound HD for clear audio.
