VLC For Windows 8 Now Available In The Windows Store

VLC For Windows 8 Now Available In The Windows Store

Just yesterday we reported that the VLC team had announced that the app for Windows 8 was still in the process of being certified. Well the good news is that if you’re a Windows 8 user looking for an optimized version of VLC for your computer, you might be pleased to learn that the app has since been certified and is now available for download via the Windows Store.

Naturally the app itself is a free download just like other versions of VLC in the past, with the main difference is that it will be optimized for the Windows 8 platform. However the team at VLC are calling it a beta and have reminded users as such, so don’t be surprised if you encounter any bugs or whatnot during your use of the device.

The app will support the same codecs as VLC for the desktop, so rest assured that most, if not all your media should be playable. This includes audio files such as MKV, Ogg, Move, FLAC, and MPC. There is also support for embedded subtitles, background audio playback, and more. (more…)

VLC For iOS 7 Brings New UI And Gestures

VLC For iOS 7 Brings New UI And Gestures

VLC is one of the most widely used media players out there, it is available for a variety of platforms. It was pulled from the App Store a few months after it was initially launched for iOS due to various issues, but then it was launched once again. Today, the folks at Videolan have rolled out a new update for the iOS app. VLC for iOS 7 brings a revamped user interface as well as new multi-touch gestures which aim to make it much easier for users to control the app.

The new user interface is in line with the UI changes that Apple has made in iOS 7, the company made a lot of UI changes in its latest and greatest iOS update. New multi-touch gestures include horizontal swipe for playback position, vertical swipe in the right half of the video to adapt volume, similar swipe in the left half of the video to adapt brightness and two finger tap to play and pause. The app also supports downloads from Google Drive as well as download and streaming support from Dropbox. Users will also be able to rename any media item in the library view and delete multiple items at once. VLC is available as a free download from the App Store.

VLC For Windows 8′s Metro Close To Being Released

VLC For Windows 8s Metro Close To Being ReleasedGood news Windows 8 users, if you were looking forward to the Window 8 Metro version of the media player, you’re in luck because it seems that the app is close to being released. According to the team at VLC who posted on their Kickstarter page, the app had been submitted to the Windows Store, but apparently due to an audio crash, they failed to receive certification. While they’re working on getting it fixed and resubmitting it, this is good news because it signifies that the app is pretty much ready to go, save for some bugs here and there.

The app will perform like the regular VLC and will support the usual formats, including file and network streaming support, and even subtitles. The team is hoping to resubmit the app for certification this weekend, so if all goes well, it shouldn’t be too long before we see its release. As for the ARM version of the app, including Windows Phone, the team is still working on it and they are hoping that they will be able to deploy it in a matter of weeks, stating that the main reasons behind the delay is due to compiler related issues.

It was back in 2012 when VLC first announced their plans to make a Windows 8 Metro version of their app. The team then launched a successful Kickstarter campaign and have been slowly making some progress over the course of the year. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for a release and will update you guys once we learn more.

VLC Version 2.1 Brings 4K Support

VLC Version 2.1 Brings 4K Support

VLC is a popular open source media playback application. It is primarily known for the fact that it supports a plethora of file formats. VideoLAN, the folks behind VLC, have release a new VLC 2.1 “Rincewind” update today which is a major new version of this popular media player. It brings a number of new features and improvements. Notably, VLC version 2.1 brings support for 4K video playback, so if you have a 4K quality media file and a display capable of handling the resolution, you can now use VLC to play back that particular file.

The update also improves audio support as there’s a new rendering pipeline for audio with better efficiency, volume and device management. It comes with fixes more nearly 1,000 bugs. The Android port of VLC now supports greater number of devices than it previously used to, same goes for the official iOS port. There’s also a partial port available for Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. For mobile ports, there are new audio, video outputs and interfaces. 4K resolution videos aren’t exactly common right now, so they’re definitely hear to stay. 4K compatible displays and televisions, though relatively expensive right now, are slowly but surely making their way into users’ lives. Good on VideoLAN for making VLC future-proof.

VLC 2.1 for iOS adds audio-only playback, streaming over FTP and UPnP

    VLC for iOS

VLC returned to iOS with big upgrades like AirPlay and Dropbox integration, but it left out a few of the very valuable features we’ve seen in other media players. The app’s new 2.1 update addresses several of those omissions in one fell swoop. VLC can now play audio-only files, and it will stream content from both UPnP devices and FTP servers. Even a few of the smaller additions could be quite useful for some viewers — there’s a video deinterlacing option, for example, as well as support for subtitles in non-Western languages. We’re sure that VLC 2.1 won’t please everyone, but iOS media lovers who held off on downloading 2.0 will want to give the update a closer look.
