Vodafone Advises iPhone Users To Not Update To iOS 6.1

Vodafone Advises iPhone Users To Not Update To iOS 6.1Apple released iOS 6.1 on January 28 without seeing a gold master (GM) version to developers prior to its launch, which is very unlike Apple if you follow their iOS release schedule. Sure – iOS 6 was downloaded by an alleged record number of iOS users, but Apple’s haste may have worked against them this time as a major mobile carrier is advising its users against updating to iOS 6.1.

Vodafone, which is a U.K.-based mobile carrier, is warning its customers who have an iPhone 4S from upgrading their device to iOS 6.1 saying in a statement, “Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.”

U.S.-based carriers have yet to speak out against iOS 6.1, but a number of users have taken to the Apple’s forumsin order to sound off on the latest OS’ battery drain problem that seem to affect all version of the iPhone, not just the iPhone 4S as Vodafone warned.

CE-Oh no he didn’t!: Vodafone’s Vittorio Colao says 4G is for ‘technofreaks’

CEOh no he didn't! Vodafone's Vottorio Colao says 4G's for 'technofreaks, early adopters'

Prefer the internet to be, um, fast? That puts you outside the norm, according to Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao. Speaking to investors, he said that he’d visited an EE store to try out 4G LTE speeds for himself and “all I saw [were] technofreaks.” As reported by Mobile News, the CEO added that only “early adopters” would notice the difference between LTE and HSPA+ and none of his friends or colleagues have told him “that we need this fast internet.” While he may want to start running with a different crowd, EE’s already hoisted him on his own petard with a new Twitter campaign — “EE welcomes technofreaks.” See the coverage and image after the fold for more.

Vodafone UK launches a full Windows Phone 8 roster on February 6th

Vodafone UK launches a full Windows Phone 8 roster on February 6th

Vodafone’s British division has been shy to embrace Windows Phone much at all in recent months. There’ll be no such reservation as of February 6th, when the carrier starts offering a wide array of Windows Phone 8 devices. HTC’s Windows Phone 8X and 8S will ship in subdued colors, while the (partly expected) Lumia 620, 820 and 920 will be available in livelier hues. We’ve yet to hear about pricing — and there’s no mention of Samsung’s ATIV S, for completists — but the launch remains good news for UK residents who want to try Microsoft’s approach to smartphones without leaving the Red Dot network.

HTC M7 Listed In Vodafone’s Inventory

HTC M7 Listed In Vodafone’s InventoryWhenever there is a spanking new flagship device that is in the works or pipeline, you would know for sure that whispers and rumors would accompany said device. Well, the HTC M7 has definitely stirred up the rumor’s nest, hence it is not surprising to check out another leak from Vodafone Germany’s inventory system that listed the HTC M7, of course. This will be a high-end Android device that will be made available to the masses in black and silver colors.

Widely tipped to be introduced to the masses this coming February 19th at a pre-MWC event organized by HTC, so far all rumors have pointed to a 4.7″ display that carries Full HD resolution, running on a quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, accompanied by 2GB RAM, a 13-megapixel camera and of course, a staple with HTC’s devices all this while, the latest Sense 5.0 user interface that will run nicely on top of the Android Jelly Bean platform. Just how much will it cost? Well, we don’t really know just yet, but since it will be a flagship device, cheap is definitely not an option.

Vodafone brings fiber optics to the Shard, gives you signal high above London

Vodafone brings brings fiber optics to the Shard, gives you signal at London's highest point

What good is a spectacular view if you can’t use your phone to tell people about it? London’s newly opened 95-story skyscraper, The Shard, measures 1,016 feet, making it the tallest building in the European Union. From the 69th and 72nd floors, you can get 360 degree views of the city, up to 40 miles out, according to the building’s owners. But what happens when the 200 people who can fit on the platforms at any one time want to user their mobile devices? Vodafone’s implemented a fiber optic system that converts signal into light, allowing it to travel upwards at a rate of 100GB per second. Once they’ve hit the proper spots, its converted into a radio signal, which is then beamed to several antennas located on different floors. More information — and some cool imagery — can be found in the source link below.

Ofcom mulls letting all UK carriers reuse spectrum for LTE

Winston Churchill is That Guy

British regulator Ofcom gave EE special license to reuse 1,800MHz spectrum for its fledgling LTE network; to put it mildly, that rubbed other carriers the wrong way. The agency may be more open to a level playing field, as it’s proposing letting everyone follow a similar route, and then some. Following calls from H3G (Three), Telefonica (O2) and Vodafone, Ofcom has offered to let all UK providers repurpose both their 1,800MHz airwaves as well as the 900MHz and 2,100MHz bands. We won’t have too long to wait before a decision: Ofcom will decide on the proposal in the second quarter, which might come just in time for carriers to supplement whatever bandwidth they get from 4G auctions. Especially when hardware already exists that could use the frequencies for faster speeds, success could see the trickle of UK LTE become more of a torrent.

BlackBerry 10 Z10 Available For Online Orders In U.K. Starting Tomorrow

blackberry 10 z10 available uk BlackBerry 10 Z10 Available For Online Orders In U.K. Starting TomorrowTomorrow will be make or break for RIM as they’ll be showcasing BlackBerry 10 to the world and releasing some new BlackBerry 10 devices, which we already assume one of them will be the BlackBerry 10 Z10. Considering how many leaks have come out in regards to BlackBerry 10, we’re surprised we have yet to hear when exactly it will be available for retail. It looks as though the final piece to the BlackBerry 10 puzzle has fallen into place as we now know when it’ll be made available.

According to a Vodafone UK employee who sent an internal communication to The Verge, it looks as though we can expect for the BlackBerry 10 Z10 to be made available to order online starting tomorrow at 5PM local time in the U.K. Phones will be in-stock and ready to pick up at all Vodafone store locations starting on January 31.

So – we should now expect for BlackBerry 10 devices to officially launch in the U.K. starting Thursday, but what does that mean for the U.S.? Unfortunately, we aren’t completely sure of that at this point, although we’re hoping potential BlackBerry 10 customers will be able to get their hands on RIM’s new phones some time this week as well.

Huawei tests 2Tbps data transmission over Vodafone’s German network, calls it a ‘first’

Huawei notches 2Tbps data transmission over Vodafone's network in Germany, calls it a 'world's first'

As terabit speeds go, Huawei’s latest fiber feat falls on the lower end of recent industry achievements. At 2Tbps, the Chinese company’s field test — one it’s hailing as a “world’s first” — comes nowhere close to the 100Tbps-plus experiments conducted by the likes of NEC and NICT. But top speed isn’t entirely the point here; real-world performance is. By leveraging existing fiber infrastructure owned by Vodafone across portions of lower Germany, Huawei was able to successfully demonstrate two record-breaking, 200G transmissions: one spanning 1,500km and the other 3,325km over an “ultra-long-haul solution.” To give you a bit of perspective on just what sort of data haul theoretical networks of this kind can achieve, Huawei claims this ultra-fast connection is “equivalent to downloading 40 HD videos in one second.” Impressive, indeed. But don’t go ditching that TWC wideband or FiOS contract just yet. While it’s nice to know this tech exists, practical deployment is still a ways off. Until then, gigabit’s the buzz word.

Huawei and Vodafone Complete World’s First 2 Tbit/s WDM Field Trial

Shenzhen, China, 24 January 2013:

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, and Vodafone, one of the world’s largest mobile communications companies, today announced the successful trial of 2 Tbit/s optical fiber transmission technologies on Vodafone’s live network. The field trial achieved 2 Tbit/s transmission capabilities of over 3,325km. This provides a data highway capacity 20-times higher than current commercially deployed 100Gbit/s systems and has a speed equivalent to downloading 40 HD videos in one second. This marks an important step forward for optical transport technology advances beyond 100G.

Traffic on carrier backbone networks is growing exponentially, driving global momentum for commercial 100G deployments and attracting attention on optical transport beyond 100G. Riding on cutting-edge technologies such as flex oDSP, super SD-FEC, and flex modulation format, this field trial achieved a record-breaking transmission distance of 1,500 km using a super-channel PDM-16QAM-based high spectral efficiency solution, and a second record-breaking transmission distance of 3,325 km using a super-channel Nyquist PDM-QPSK-based ultra-long-haul solution. Both transmissions were on a link with G.652 fibers and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) without electrical regeneration. The link used in the trial was on Vodafone’s backbone network, passing through a few cities across middle and south Germany.

“We are at the forefront of global 100G deployments, and have taken the lead in delivering key breakthroughs in technologies beyond 100G. Through collaboration with Vodafone and other leading international operators and customer-centric R&D, Huawei is always ready to build advanced optical networks for customers,” said Jack Wang, president of Huawei’s transport network product line.

To help customers optimize their overall technical architecture and adopt next-generation transport networks, Huawei conducted the world’s first 2T WDM field trial and pan- European 400G field trial in 2012, and also unveiled a series of scientific research achievements in optical transmission. According to Ovum, Huawei ranks No. 1 in the WDM/OTN, 40G, 100G, and global optical network markets, as of Q3 2012.
