MetroPCS reveals Samsung Galaxy S III as part of fall lineup

MetroPCS reveals Samsung Galaxy S III as part of fall lineup

Turns out the LG Motion 4G wasn’t all that MetroPCS had up its sleeve for reveal today, as the prepaid carrier separately let its new fall lineup slip, and wouldn’t you know it, among those devices is the Samsung Galaxy S III. Joining the superphone will be a smaller Sammy smartphone, and like the LG Connect 4G, it’ll support VoLTE — curious that the carrier isn’t touting the feature for the Galaxy S III, don’t you think? ZTE will also be making another go at MetroPCS, as an Android handset with a 4.3-inch screen is now in the cards, but other relevant specs remain sorely absent. Rounding out the lineup will be an import from Coolpad, which is said to wield a 4-inch screen and will retail for $149. According to Phone Scoop, we may see this one make an official debut later this week. Naturally, none of these slabs carry the same clout as the Galaxy S III, and if you’d like to get a bit more familiar with the soon-to-be premiere smartphone at MetroPCS, be sure to check out PC Magazine below, which managed to score a hands-on with the latest version of Samsung’s finest.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Voice over LTE smartphone prepared

Samsung is at the forefront of the record books yet again, having made an announcement that concerns the first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) smartphone in the world (at least this is what they claim, and we do know that MetroPCS, of all the mobile carriers in the US, have announced the first VoLTE service in the US recently), and this particular smartphone will be available to the masses with their flagship model, the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE spearheading this particular niche market.

Samsung is said to be supporting VoLTE with the Galaxy S3 LTE model in Korea sometime from this month onwards, and this will be followed up by the availability of this particular smartphone across global LTE markets, making sure that Samsung will remain at the forefront of the LTE market as well as mobile communications technology. Good luck to them, and I do hope that this venture will be able to take off, as Samsung already has plenty on their hands at the moment, especially with the high profile court case against Apple that is happening in the US right now.

For the uninitiated, just what is VoLTE? Well, VoLTE basically relies on an IP packet-based service for both voice and data, which will pave the way for new multimedia services to be introduced, including the ability to convert from voice call to video call. Not only that, with VoLTE, it also delivers more than double the voice frequency of 3G and HD-level audio codec (AMR-WB), which in turn translates to delivering high quality voice calls that can be compared to having a direct conversation with someone in person – I suppose this is one claim that I will need to hear it to believe it, how about you?

It is said that the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE smartphones can receive an upgrade to support VoLTE services through a software update, all without having to go through the hassle of adding in more communication chips.

Samsung Galaxy S III LTE to support VoLTE calls, starting with Korea in August

Samsung Galaxy S III for AT&T and Sprint

Aren’t you glad you waited to buy an LTE version of the Galaxy S III? Samsung has confirmed that the versions with faster cellular data will support Voice over LTE on appropriately equipped networks, giving them that IP-based boost to call quality. The rollout will start with the Korean LTE model receiving support in August — we suspect SK Telecom is an early partner here — followed by a deployment in foreign LTE markets, which would mostly limit the upgrades to American and Canadian owners. About our only qualm is with Samsung’s assertion that the update makes the Galaxy S III the “world’s first Voice over LTE smartphone:” we’re pretty sure the fine folks at LG and MetroPCS have a thing or two to say about keeping up with current events.

MetroPCS launches world’s first commercially available VoLTE smartphone

MetroPCS has announced that it is now offering for sale the world’s first commercially available voice over LTE service and compatible 4G LTE smartphone. The smartphone in question is the LG Connect 4G Android device, and it is available in select MetroPCS stores around the country. The wireless carrier says it will continue to roll out VoLTE service and additional handsets in the coming weeks.

The LG Connect 4G is available right now for $249 with no contract. The smartphone runs on the Android 2.3 platform and uses a 1.2 GHz dual core processor. The smartphone also has 1 GB of RAM and supports 4G LTE wireless connectivity.

The smartphone has a five-megapixel rear camera capable of recording 720p HD video. It also has a VGA resolution front facing camera for video conferencing. The screen of the smartphone is a four-inch NOVA touchscreen. The device also has integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Internal storage for the smartphone is 1.78 GB with most storage handled via external microSD cards. The device ships with a 2 GB memory card and supports cards up to 32 GB. The battery promises 4.5 hours of talk time and 250 hours on standby.

MetroPCS launches first Voice over LTE service in the world

MetroPCS might not be one of the major four mobile carriers here in the US, but that does not mean their small size makes them relatively unimportant to the overall scheme of things where smartphones and mobile services are concerned. In fact, MetroPCS is proud to announce that they are offering the first Voice over LTE service in the world, calling it VoLTE for short. This particular “achievement” would mean MetroPCS has beat South Korea’s SK Telecom to the claim by a day, which is pretty close to the chase.

Do take note that majority of the US carriers do not have plans penciled in to adopt VoLTE as part of their operations on a wide scale basis, at least not until next year, but I guess MetroPCS’ management wants to gain the early mover advantage in order to prop up their earnings call in February. According to MetroPCS, another historical first involved the maiden first VoLTE-compatible handset being sold at one of its Dallas/Fort Worth stores in Texas. MetroPCS may not be grand in scale, but it’s certainly not lacking for ambition. Just over a year after announcing its eventual transition to Voice over LTE, the carrier has officially launched its VoLTE services. Moreover, it’s announcing the first sale of a VoLTE-capable handset at one of the company’s Dallas / Fort Worth store locations. The Android-powered LG Connect 4G is the outfit’s first (and only, for now) VoLTE-capable phone, but the operator’s promising more rollouts and phone options “in the coming weeks.” For the consumer, those in range of LTE signals should notice clearer calls, and it’s become something of a trend to see carriers (Verizon and Sprint, for instance) moving in this direction as 2G / 3G networks start to show their age. So, DFW residents — anyone been able to try it out? Let us know in comments below.

SK Telecom deploys HD Voice over LTE, claims title of world’s first

SK Telecom deploys HD Voice over LTE, claims title of world's first

The little blue marble we call Earth is no stranger to HD Voice — it’s been around commercially since Orange debuted the service over its 3G network in Moldova nearly three years ago — but the technology still hasn’t been officially deployed over an LTE network. That is, until SK Telecom launches the service later today. Doing so will allow the South Korean carrier to snag the crown for world’s first before Sprint, which recently announced that its network won’t have it until later this year. It’s a win-win scenario for the company: HD Voice over LTE is meant to vastly improve call quality and reduce latency for the customers, while lessening network strain and offering new revenue-making opportunities for SK Telecom. What about devices? It hasn’t announced any brand new smartphones that can take advantage of the service, but the company’s ready to pre-load the Samsung Galaxy S III with software that enables HD Voice capability, and is planning to push an update to current owners of the flagship device. If you’re the type of person that still makes the occasional call, this kind of progress should come as pleasant news.
