Power Tap Wall Charger: Let the Power Flow

The Power Tap isn’t something you need, but if you’re up for having a charger that’s actually fun, then you might want to look into it. As the name implies, the wall charger comes in the shape of a tap. However, instead of dispensing drinks and other liquids, it “dispenses” power.

PowerTap 620x572Just twist it open to turn it on and charge your gadgets or shut the power off by turning it the other way. The tap itself will glow red or blue to let you know when your device is or isn’t charging, respectively.

The Power Tap is compatible with all devices that charge via a USB port, though since it’s made in the UK, it appears to be designed for European outlets only. It’s available from Amazon for $28(USD).

Wall Torch Sconce Turns Anyone into Indiana Jones, Cave Not Included

Turn your home into a dungeon, a castle, an ancient pyramid or an olympic stadium with this cool wall sconce that looks like a torch. This is a perfect night light, because everyone knows that monsters fear torch light more than they fear light from modern light bulbs. And snakes. Snakes hate torches.

The torch light even flickers. The best part is that it doesn’t stay on the wall. It instantly switches from wall-mounted to hand-held, for impromptu adventures, since it runs on two AA batteries (not included). It even turns off automatically after 10 minutes to prevent battery drain.

Kids and adults will love this torch. So spelunk on over to ThinkGeek, where you can buy one for just $19.99(USD).

Chinese Hackers Have Also Been Hacking The Wall Street Journal

Not to be left out in the old boys club of the Great Chinese Hacking Scandal of 2013, the Wall Street Journal included themselves with the New York Times as being hacked by Chinese operatives. That’s two big name dead tree media organizations getting hacked by China. Who’s next? More »

Facebook May Be Ditching The Two-Column Timeline Design

If you were to go back a year, you’d see a whole lot of rage directed towards the Facebook timeline redesign. If you were to ask today, many Facebook users wouldn’t even remember the controversy. However, seems like Facebook didn’t like its own redesign, so its tweaking personal pages yet again: select users, when they log in, will see a new personal page with the wall presented in a single column format. The wall again becomes a list, and they get the left side. Open graph actions, like all those apps you approved and then never used again, or the Spotify songs you recently listened (basically all the low-value detrius) gets the right hand side. I think it looks nice!  (more…)

Magnet Paint Transforms Walls into Magnet Boards

For those of us with modern, stainless steel fridges, we can only stick our refrigerator magnets to the ugly sides – and if yours happens to be recessed into the wall like ours is, you’re pretty much screwed. But if you whip out a can of Magnet Paint, you can make any wall or flat surface into a magnet-friendly place.

magnet paint 1

Developed by Japan’s Colorworks[JP], Magnet Paint goes on in two coats, a basecoat that contains the metal particles, followed by a topcoat that contains the color. Just pick any wall, and you’ll be able to slap magnets up on it like it was an old metal fridge. The idea is perfect for kid’s rooms as well as office walls. It even looks like they offer a version that combines chalkboard paint with Magnet Paint.

At this point, I’m not sure where you can find Colorworks’ Magnet Paint outside of Japan, but it looks like there are a couple of similar products already available here in the U.S.

Walls that function as mirrors?

Do you happen to have a narcissistic streak in you? Assuming you have answered that question in the affirmative, then you might be interested to check out this particular imaging technique that turns your walls into mirrors. Yes sir, this “optical power” is achieved through the clever implementation of scientific principles as well as experiments in a laboratory instead of just wishful thinking. A study that was recently published mentioned, “Looking around corners and through thin turbid layers in real time with scattered incoherent light” has attracted its fair share of attention, where a spatial light modulator will be able to undo the scattering which makes objects opaque or non-reflecting.

This paves the way for real-time imaging through opaque materials in addition to around highly scattering optical diffusers. The primary use for such a technique at this point in time? It will most probably see action in biological and medical studies, although I believe that someone will think of something else in due time.

iPad Controls LED Wall Art

Sure, you can put some art on your wall, but how about putting up some LED wall art that’s controlled via your iPad? That’s exactly what Greg Friedland did and I have to say that the results are pretty cool. It’s definitely a nice way of filling up an empty wall in an apartment.

Greg Friedland’s Aurora LED wall started out as an idea to put some art on a 6′×12′ wall in his living room. He created a grid of 544 LEDs that’s capable of 16 million colors, attached to a 4′×8′ wood board. The LEDs are controlled by a microcontroller, which in turn is controlled by a program running on a laptop. This software on his PC connects to an iPad, which allows interaction with the moving patterns. That seems like a lot of steps but I guess there’s no good way to control it directly from the iPad yet. There are also built-in modes that respond to music.

It’s something that I wouldn’t mind having on my empty living room wall. To find out how to make yours, check out Greg’s instructions here.
