Meb Keflezighi Edition Sony Walkman W Series arrive at Walmart stores next month

If you happen to be a frequent shopper at Walmart, and more or less know everything that America’s superstore carries by heart, then you would notice that from next month onwards, there is a brand new version of the Sony Walkman W Series. I am referring to the Meb Keflezighi edition of this particular Walkman family, as it was developed in conjunction with Meb Keflezighi’s 4th place finish in the recently concluded 2012 Olympic marathon. What’s so special about the Meb Keflezighi edition Sony Walkman W Series? Read on to find out!

Meb Keflezighi is no doubt an American distance running hero, although he did not manage to pick up a medal at this year’s Olympics, he did win silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics and ended up tops at the 2009 New York City Marathon. The Meb Keflezighi Edition Walkman W Series reflects his spirit, where it was also specially developed in order to invigorate his marathon training program in addition to catering for the regimens of runners as well as health and fitness enthusiasts worldwide.

This special edition of the Walkman W Series is a wire-free digital music player that was especially designed to make using it as convenient and comfortable as possible for the user, whether one is pounding the pavement, or hitting the treadmill at the local gym. It boasts of water-resistant technology that makes sure the buckets of sweat it encounters during your exercise session as well as intense weather conditions are shrugged off.

This digital music player comes with 2GB of storage space, and when you average that out, we are looking at around 470 songs, in addition to its availability in a special-edition orange model. Similar to the rest of the Walkman W Series, the Meb Keflezighi edition will be accompanied by Content Transfer software that enables users to drag and drop music files from iTunes for Windows, Windows Media Player or Windows Explorer (DRM free content only) in a snap. You can also charge it quickly, where three minutes of charge time translates to an hour of playback, while a full battery life delivers up to 8 hours of non-stop music.

The Meb Keflezighi Edition Walkman W Series will retail for $69.99 a pop if you are interested.

Samsung Galaxy S II for TMobile now available for $299 without contract from Walmart

If you’ve ever thought it was impossible to score an excellent smartphone alongside a prepaid plan, it’s time to reconsider the assumption. Just like the Galaxy S II will soon arrive at Boost Mobile for $360, those willing to brave the crowds at Walmart will save some cash with T-Mobile’s version of the handset, which now sells for $299 — in comparison, T-Mobile currently sells the Galaxy S II for $550 outright. As one caveat, the phone must be sold with a no-contract plan of at least $30, but one can discontinue service whenever they desire. If your wallet is now tingling, you’ll find the full PR after the break.

Walmart Is Testing an iPhone Checkout System That Could Help You Escape Its Clutches a Little Bit Faster [Walmart]

The Apple Store and Walmart might seem like they’re on completely opposite ends of the retail spectrum. They often share one similarity though, like hellish interiors teaming with to many, sweating, breathing, sneezing, coughing, occasionally corpulent customers. Walmart’s trying out a new Apple-y, iPhone-based payment system that could make escape a little easier. More »

Walmart testing ‘Scan & Go’ iPhone self-checkout app, cashiers becoming endangered species

Walmart testing 'Scan & Go' iPhone self-checkout app

Reuters was tipped off to a survey that reveals Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is testing a new system that would allow customers to scan items with their iPhone then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter. The “Scan & Go” feature won’t let you pay with your phone, at least not yet, but rather than scanning each item individually in line, shoppers will be able to quickly transfer their list to the kiosk and pay in one quick step. The hope is that the new system will dramatically speed checkout times and reduce congestion in the stores. The trial is taking place at the supercenter Rogers, AR, where the entire event will be monitored and recorded for research purposes. Participants are being rewarded with $100 and a $25 gift certificate towards their shopping experience. When or if “Scan & Go” will be delivered to John Q. Public remains to be seen. But we’re sure fans of rolled back prices are eager to see it go live.

ZTE-made Concord arrives at T-Mobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contract-free

ZTEmade Concord arrives at TMobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contractfree

T-Mobile wants to offer as much of a lure to smartphone newcomers as to power users who might spring for its truly unlimited data, and the ZTE Concord might just be the right kind of bait. The truly 2010-vintage Android 2.3, 3.5-inch screen and 2-megapixel camera won’t get anyone’s pulse racing, but a $100 contract-free price is hard to ignore — even for the sort who’d otherwise be looking for a just-does-calls flip phone. Accordingly, the carrier plans to put the Concord in front of audiences that would rarely care to set foot in a dedicated cellphone store. Walmart is selling the phone today for those comfortable with a Walmart Family Mobile plan. If you’d rather show fealty to T-Mobile itself, you’ll have to swing through a Target store on or after August 26th.

Google Play gift cards officially announced, now rolling out to Target, RadioShack and GameStop

Google officially announces Google Play gift cards, now rolling out to Target, Radio Shack and GameStop

We’ve seen hints of them in the Google Play app and some pretty clear evidence of them in the wild, and now Google has finally officially announced the availability of Google Play gift cards. Those are available in $10, $25 and $50 denominations, and will be rolling out to Target, RadioShack and GameStop retail stores in the United States over the next few weeks (no word on availability outside the US just yet). According to Google, they’ll also be available on Walmart.com later this month, but not in Walmart stores for the time being. As you’d expect, the cards can be used to purchase anything on Google Play, including movies, music and books in addition to apps (or in-app items).

Best Buy, Walmart, Target, more join forces for MCX mobile payment, deals provider

Best Buy, Walmart, Target, more join forces for Merchant Customer Exchange mobile payment, deals provider

Mobile payments make strange bedfellows, so it’s perhaps not all that surprising that a group of high profile retailers have teamed up to bring the world the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX). The list includes such biggies as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe’s and Shell, among others. The venture is set to offer up a mobile-commerce app that will provide payments and deals on “virtually any smartphone.” Details are still pretty scarce, though the MCX’s official site promises more info on the offering soon, including further details on deals and additional company names. In the meantime, there’s a press release after the break.

Walmart announces 100th solar installation in California

You only have to set foot in most Walmart stores to know that the company wants to be green. For instance, in my local store, there are hordes of skylights all around the building in the ceiling and lights in the store turn off and on depending on how much light is coming through those skylights from the outside. That means you to be walking around and suddenly some of the lights turn off making the interior darker. I assume most Walmart locations use similar systems.

As strange as that is, it clearly shows that Walmart designs stores with an eye toward using natural lighting and saving electricity. Walmart has announced that it has installed its 100th solar installation in the state of California. The 100th store to get a solar panel installation was Walmart location on College Avenue in San Diego. Walmart says that the solar panel installation is the latest step on its road to being supplied by 100% renewable energy in all locations.

According to Walmart, its green initiatives also generate significant jobs at each location with an average of 48 contract positions per site. Walmart also states that its focus on solar power has generated more than 3000 contract construction jobs in California alone. Walmart has a significant solar footprint in the state of California with its total combined solar effort generating up to 70 million kWh of clean renewable energy each year.

That is enough power for 5400 typical homes. Walmart is also eliminating 21,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. That is equivalent to taking 4100 cars off the road. The solar installations are able to provide 10 to 30% of each facility’s total electricity needs.

“Walmart has demonstrated a real commitment to solar energy systems here in San Diego and throughout California, and hopefully other companies will make the move to do the same on their rooftops,” said Tony Young, San Diego City Council President. “This latest renewable energy effort is another step forward in San Diego’s clean-energy mission and will help make our city a better, more sustainable place for current residents and our next generation.”
