Endotheliometer The Mortality Watch

Endotheliometer The Mortality WatchLet us have a quick show of hands here – who wants to live forever? I am quite sure that over the centuries, many men – whether they are of royal lineage or an ordinary peasant, a lord over all that he surveys or just king of his humble home, would have liked to spend more time on earth – preferably forever. Just take a look at the cosmetics industry and the revenue it makes, and you’ll get the picture. While no one has yet to crack the immortality code, a device has been developed that hopes to tell you just how many days you have left on earth, assuming nothing tragic or sudden happens to you like a fatal accident, that is. The researchers who are based at Lancaster University in the U.K., tout that their “Endotheliometer” might end up as “the thermometer of the 21st century.”

The Endotheliometer is a non-invasive, wrist-mounted device which is capable of measuring the activity within the layer of cells that is known as endothelium. Endothelium is the coat within your body’s blood vessels, and the Endotheliometer will detect cardiac-induced pulse waves in the skin’s microcirculation using LDF (laser Doppler flowmetry). Since endothelial activity starts to decline the older you get, this could very well be used to determine how much of your life left you have. Of course, I don’t think it is safe to say that this is a 100% accurate figure, but rather, a ball park number so that you can live your life to the fullest each day.

Casio’s new G-Shock watches pack Bluetooth, music remote control

Casio's new GShock watches pack Bluetooth, music remote control

Newcomers like Pebble might be the current darlings when it comes to connected watches, but it doesn’t mean that established players are standing still. Back at CES, Casio showed a G-Shock watch with Bluetooth (GB-5600A) capable of receiving calls and text-message notifications (with sound and vibration), plus automatic time updates from an iPhone. Today the company announced a pair of G-Shock watches (GB-6900B / GB-X6900B) with Bluetooth 4.0 LE that extend the existing functionality to select Android handsets. In addition, both watches feature music remote control (via AVRCP, presumably) and the ability to set alarms and timers from Casio’s companion smartphone app. Battery life is a pretty impressive two years (with 12 hours of Bluetooth use per day) on a single CR2032 battery. The GB-6900B and GB-X6900B will be released in Japan on September 21st for 18,000 yen (roughly $187) and 20,000 yen (roughly $208) respectively. All that’s needed now is a retro-looking Databank or calculator watch with Bluetooth, right, Casio?

Tentative Samsung smartwatch design unearthed in Korean patents

Samsung smartwatch patents unearthed in Korea, but don't get too excited

While Samsung hasn’t been shy about its desire to build a new smartwatch, we’ve had few clues as to what that wristwear could look like. However, Moveplayer has uncovered a trio of Korean design patents that, combined, could represent a design template. Registered between March and May, the patents show a watch with both Android-style controls in the middle and a prominent flexible display. The device looks plausible, but we wouldn’t leap to conclusions — companies frequently patent designs that won’t necessarily ship. There’s also no clear connections to a previously filed Gear trademark associated with wearable technology. If Samsung ever releases a watch in this mold, though, it will at least seem very familiar.

Tokyoflash Kisai Neutron Watch: It’s Cylon Time!

Who doesn’t like having a watch that looks like it’s from the future? Well I sure would like to have one, and I have to say that the Kisai Neutron from Tokyoflash would be perfect for humans and Cylons alike.

    tokyoflash kisai neutron watch

The Tokyoflash Kisai Neutron has a metal grille over some LED light bars that curve around your wrist. The time is displayed by flashing digits, which makes it easily readable by anyone. You can view time either by watching the digits scroll or fade in. The watch is motion sensitive, so you just need to give it a shake to show the time. You can also choose to have it always on, or light up upon the touch of a button.

The Kisai Neutron watch sells for $169(USD) and is powered by a USB-rechargeable battery. It comes in black, gold, or gunmetal with white, blue, or red LEDs.

Samsung Smart Watch Could Be The SM-V700

Samsung Smart Watch Could Be The SM V700While there were rumors of Apple entering the smart watch market, you know for sure that this is a very profitable sign for other companies who want to ride on the bandwagon that Apple is on, since in recent times, Apple has rarely put a wrong foot in their direction where new products are concerned, what with the iPhone and iPad clearly working up explosive sales figures regardless of the markets that they are launched in. Samsung, a business partner and also rival to Apple, too wants in on the possible smart watch race, and apparently it seems that the model number of Samsung’s alleged smart watch has leaked out, where it is known as the SM-V700.

Unfortunately, apart from the SM-V700 model number, nothing else is known about the device, as to when it will be released and how much will it cost. Hopefully a prototype will be revealed soon, and that the customary leaked photos of it will be clear enough to make out some important detail of the device.

    Tokyoflash Kisai Neutron

When it comes to fancy and flashy watches that at times require you to crack your brain when telling the time is concerned, you know for sure that the folks over at Tokyoflash have got this “art” down pat. In fact, one of their latest releases, the Tokyoflash Kisai Neutron, will jive with Cylons everywhere thanks to a future forward form factor. In fact, it will even sport a built-in motion sensor that can be set to display the time (or date, should your desk calendar happen to be missing( through a simple action of waving up and down.

Over the course of the next 48 hours (the clock is definitely ticking!), the Tokyoflash Kisai Neutron can be yours for a special price point of $139 a pop. The particular “light show” on the Tokyoflash Kisai Neutron is easily activated through a flick of the wrist, or you can also opt to take the more traditional route by pressing a button. Apart from that, if battery life is not too much of an issue with you, you can always settle for the “always on” mode. The Tokyoflash Kisai Neutron would arrive in black, gold and gunmetal color options for the stainless steel and plastic case, in addition to red, white and blue for the LEDs. Since the battery is USB-rechargeable, juicing it up after a day of “work” should not be too difficult.

Doctor Who Wristwatches for Real Timelords

While you’ll need a TARDIS (or maybe a DeLorean) if you really want to travel through time, these new watches will help you keep track of time, regardless of what dimension you find yourself in.

There are two new analog watches in the collection from Zeon, and both of them are officially-licensed designs. The first one has a TARDIS theme, complete with police box leather watch strap.

    doctor who watch 1

Each collectible watch comes in an official Doctor Who blue watch box (which I can only imagine someone will decorate as a TARDIS as soon as these come out), along with a unique serial number and certificate of authenticity.

    doctor who watch 2

The second design has a Dalek design, and is guaranteed not to exterminate your wrist – though it will exterminate any excuses for you to show up late to meetings.

    doctor who watch 3

    doctor who watch 4

Both designs look really substantial – and are coming soon from Zeon. You can keep tabs on them over on their Facebook page, where you need to click their Like button 100 times.
