Higgs Boson Watch Puts the God Particle on Your Wrist

While you might think you need to be a physicist with a particle accelerator to experience the elusive Higgs Boson particle, you’re right. But if you’d like to pay tribute to the recent accomplishments of the CMS and ATLAS teams at the Large Hadron Collider, then grab this watch.

higgs boson 1

The ultimate in geeky timepieces, the Higgs Boson watch displays a spiraling display which is supposed to represent the so-called “God Particle,” without which, not a single atom would hold together in the universe, and we wouldn’t exist. While I’m not sure how accurate the design is, it can definitely tell time.

Best of all, this thing will cost you way less than building your own backyard particle accelerator. It’s just $39.95(USD) over at Gadgets & Gear. Nobel Prize sold separately.

Satellite watch lacks hands or digits

From time to time, we come across watches that tell time in their very own quirky manner, and the same can be said for the new Satellite watch from Mr. Jones which is being prepared for a rollout. Described as “the world’s first 24 hour watch (one rotation per day) without any hands or digits on the dial”, it sports an ingenious display for you to tell the time, thanks to the brilliance of designer Crispin Jones (aka The Accurate, ‘Remember You Will Die’ watch fame).

Telling the time on the Satellite watch is not too hard at all, and with a little bit of practice, you will be able to get used to it in a jiffy. All you need to do is take a glance at the Limited Edition Satellite watch, where the outer hour marker will orbit the inner minutes. Individual hours will be marked by a bright color, and these colors will follow a regular six hour pattern. I guess it will take some practice, but you ought to be able to tell time intuitively at a glance in, for the lack of a better word, no time at all. Bear in mind that only 100 of these puppies will be produced, so you might want to grab them quick.

The 1:Face Watch: Support a Good Cause While Telling the Time

You’ve probably seen people with rubber-band-like bracelets advocating one cause or another, but if you’re like me, you’d appreciate something a little more functional. The 1:Face Watch supports a variety of causes and lets you tell the time at the same time.

The 1:Face Watch was designed by Mirza Minds. It’s quite minimal, which I like. Each color supports a different cause. The white watch provides food for children, the pink watch provides a mammogram for someone in need.

All of these causes are backed by reputable charities, so you don’t have to worry about where your money is going to.

The 1:Face Watch was launched as an Indiegogo project, and you can get in on the action for as little as $40(USD). With 27 days left, the project has amassed over $100,000 in funding, with a goal of $25,000 so it will definitely go into production

Always Accurate Adventurometer

There is just something about telling the time, and some of us have moved on from collecting comics as a hobby to amassing a growing collection of watches instead. Well, instead of gunning for the usual high end models from Rolex, Tag Heuer, Patek and the likes, how about settling for something more unique like the $449.95 Always Accurate Adventurometer? This men’s watch will be able to ensure you know what the exact time is at all times, where it receives updates from the world’s radio clock transmitters while ensuring you know just what kind of weather conditions are coming your way whenever you venture outdoors.

With the Always Accurate Adventurometer, you will be able to rely on a constant flow of reliable data while you hike, ski, cycle, or sail, thanks to its digital display that works well with an analog dial. Other hardware wizardry in this timepiece includes a separate compass, an altimeter, a barometer, and thermometer functions, and the digital display will show off chronograph (1/100th second accuracy), world time, 24-hour time, and an 87-year calendar among others. It receives radio signals half a dozen times per day from atomic clocks located in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Japan, and China, and is smart enough to adjust itself for daylight saving and when traveling between time zones. You need not fret about battery life either, as a rechargeable battery inside can stash away energy collected by a solar cell in the watch’s face, where a full charge lets it work for up to five months.

Tokyoflash hides the time inside the Kisai Maze watch for you to find (video)

Image

Want a watch that prevents passers-by from checking the time on your dime? Buy a Tokyoflash. The company’s latest timepiece is the Kisai Maze, which hides the info in the negative space of a maze that’s only readable with some practice. Available in stainless steel or IP Black, there’s an EL backlight to let you annoy the elderly at night and you can watch it being demonstrated after the break. If you snap one up in the next 48 hours, it’ll cost $99 (€77, £61), but hurry, because after Thursday morning the price leaps to $139 (€108, £86) — so now’s the time to learn how to be ruthlessly punctual.

Mass Effect N7 Ambassador Watch: Spectre Gadget

If the Mass Effect Wikia is to be believed, the Omni-tool is a flashlight, a scanner, a camera, a media player, a gaming console, a hacking tool, a recycling machine, a medical device and of course a weapon. But apparently one thing it is not is a watch. Thankfully BioWare has the answer.

As you can see the watch is restrained in its geekiness. If you’re looking to outdork someone you’ll be better off with the Watch Boy. The strap and bezel of the N7 Ambassador watch are both made from stainless steel strap and bezel . It’s water resistant up to 300ft,  it has a carbon fiber dial, a laser etching of the N7 and Mass Effect logos as well as the individual number of the watch at the back and a Swiss movement – you won’t be stuck calibrating this machine.

Experiment ZR012 puts some Wankel on your wrist

We all love a good Wankel, and crazy watchmakers MB&F and URWERK have put the spinning, meshing polygons to excellent use in the limited edition C3H5N3O9 “Nitro” Experiment ZR012 timepiece. Fronted by a unique Wankel-inspired movement that shows hours and minutes on a pair of eccentric rotating Reuleaux polygons, Experiment ZR012 will be released as a limited run of just twelve, hypnotic examples.

Wankel engines have had limited commercial success, delivering power that belied their compact size, but issues around maintenance – as well as the increasing potency and efficiency of rival technologies – have reduced their appeal. Mazda is perhaps the car company best known for using Wankel powerplants, but it ceased production in April 2012.

In the case of Experiment ZR012, the power isn’t by Wankel, but the indications are. The lower “dial” shows hours while the upper shows minutes; the tips of the triangular rotors trace curves against the edge of the markers, with a tolerance of 0.2mm between them.

On the back of the zirconium case – which measures 55 x 44 mm, not counting the lugs – is a power gage, with a full wind good for 39 hours of runtime. Making things complex inside is the fact that the rotors aren’t directly attached to the crankshaft from the mechanism, and there’s an intermediary (and adjustable) stage to connect them all together.

Unsurprisingly, Experiment ZR012 doesn’t come cheap. The watches will be sold at 110,000 Swiss francs ($118k) apiece, followed by another twelve Wankel-powered watches, the red gold RG012, sometime in 2013.

Back to the Future Watch Built Like a DeLorean

Think you’re a real Back To The Future fan? Here’s a memento that I bet you don’t have. This DeLorean DNA Watch by Romain Jerome is made from the same stainless steel used to make a DeLorean DMC-12, just like the one that Doc Brown and Marty McFuy drove in the movies.
delorean dna watch
The strap is even inspired by the DeLorean’s interior, made from upholstered leather and anthracite grey stitching like the seats in the car. Unfortunately, these watches are limited to only 81 pieces. Why they didn’t make 88, I have no idea. These babies will cost you a cool $15,900(USD). So you’ll need to get a future sports almanac and come back to make some money before you can afford one.

It’s a pretty sweet looking watch. Marty would approve. It’s too bad I don’t have a spare 15 grand and an actual DeLorean to go with it.

Nike FuelBand, SportWatch GPS add some new colors for the holidays

The good news is that Nike is adding some new colors to its Nike+ connected FuelBand and SportWatch GPS lines so your wristwear can more closely match your kicks all winter. While the original translucent limited edition Nike+ FuelBand Ice won’t be returning, at the end of October it will be available in new White Ice and Black Ice colors, with distribution expanded to more Nike stores in the US, Canada and UK. If you prefer GPS, precise timing and a multiplatform Nike+ Running app to LEDs, the TomTom-powered Nike+ SportWatch GPS is rolling out a new white/silver colorway. The bad news? If you were waiting for other updates, like a FuelBand with GPS, SportWatch that can pump out some MP3s while you run, FuelBand app for Android or really anything other than cosmetic changes, you’re out of luck. We wouldn’t let that get in the way of a workout however, check below for more details on each or return to customizing some NikeiD Lebron Xs — your choice.

Nike adds new option to Nike+ SportWatch line

The Nike+ SportWatch GPS wristwatches have been around for a while. This watch is a tie up between athletic shoemaker Nike and GPS company TomTom. The product allows athletes to track all sorts of metrics about their run. TomTom and Nike have unveiled a new addition to the launch lineup.

Previously, the company offered black & anthracite, black & blue, black & volt, and volt & black colors. The lineup now has a white & silver version runners can choose. The watch has a highly visible backlit LCD display that shows all sorts of information to the wearer while they are running.

The available metrics the watch can show include time, average and instantaneous pace, and distance run. The GPS features of the watch that are powered by TomTom offer motivational details to help enhance the running experience, including run reminders and messages to help inspire users before and after runs. The watch allows users to collect the details during their run and then share the details back via the Nike+ community.

Wearers who don’t care for any of the colors Nike has in its standard Nike+ SportWatch line can get an exclusive color combination that is available only at Best Buy. The Best Buy exclusive version of the watch is black and red. Both the new white & silver and the black and red version are available for pre-order right now at $169 and $149 respectively.
