Colorful Water Dancing Speakers Put a Tiny Bellagio Fountain on Your Desktop

Speakers are great for hearing your music, but most speakers look pretty boring. So when when you aren’t listening to music, they look terrible in your home. These Water Dancing Speakers deliver sound and are visually pleasing to look at, making the whole experience much nicer.

These speakers each have 4 colorful LEDs aimed upward, along with jets of water that bounce along with the beat. The color of the light changes at random, and the height of the water is determined by the volume and pitch of the sound. They connect to your computer via USB, and are completely sealed so you won’t need to refill them.

Pretty cool huh? They cost about $63(USD) for a pair over at Red5 and will add some color and movement to your room.

How a Pro Takes Spectacular Split-Second Shots of Water Droplets

A drop of water might seem mundane, but if you take a picture of one the right way, it can be absolutely stunning. No one knows that better than Markus Reugels, the guy who took that amazing “world in a drop of water shot.” This is how he does it. More »

Waterfall Swing is the Object of Your Childhood Fantasies

When I was a kid, I always found waterfalls mesmerizing. There’s just something about the massiveness of the whole thing that my kid brain just couldn’t fully process. Mesh that concept with a swing set and you’ve got yourself the object of many people’s childhood fantasies.

Waterfall SwingThe Waterfall Swing is a collaborative installation by Mike O’Toole, Andrew Ratcliff, Ian Charnas and Andrew Witte. Its primary component are mechanical waterjets and solenoids that showered a plane of falling droplets towards the path of the one who’s on the swing.

The cool thing is that the curtain of water parts in the middle whenever the person on the swing, well, swings past it.

The swing debuted at the 2011 World Maker Faire. If you think you’ve got what it takes, you can learn how to build your own Waterfall Swing by checking out this link.

Man Tries to “Walk” Across Irish Sea in a Hamster Wheel, Fails

It always amazes me how humans will do so many silly stunts. I’m not sure if that makes us stupid or awesome, but it’s always entertaining. Chris Todd made a homemade floating hamster wheel boat so that he could “walk” across the Irish Sea.

It’s more or less a simple pontoon boat that’s powered by walking in the wheel. The idea was to walk all 66-miles across the Irish Sea from Wales to the East coast of Ireland. Sadly, he had to stop around half way because of a faulty rudder and bad weather.

He was pulled to safety by a support boat, but the watercraft, called “Tredalo,” ended up at the bottom of the Irish Sea where the fish now have a new wheel to play with.

Water on the Moon Came From… the Sun? [Space]

Water on the moon is nothing particularly revelatory. But a new study suggests that H20 on the surface of the Earth’s nearest neighbor comes from a most unlikely place: the Sun. More »

Whoa, Water Drops Floating on Top of Water Makes No Sense but It’s Awesome [Video]

In the comics, the Flash can vibrate his body so fast that he can walk through walls. With water, though, vibration can keep water droplets from being absorbed into a larger surface of water. Instead of coalescing into the larger body, they just gather on top as long as the surface is kept vibrating. It’s amazing to see, and when you stop to think about what you’re looking at, it doesn’t seem to make an ounce of sense—except obviously it does. Science! [YouTube] More »

Four-Wheeler + Jetski = Quadski

I think like most people who grew up watching James Bond hoon that white Lotus Esprit around Greece and then drive it directly into and out of the ocean where it became a submarine, I’ve always wanted an amphibious vehicle. You still can’t buy a Lotus that transforms into a submarine, but pretty soon you’ll be able to purchase the Quadski.

qs 1

The Quadski is an amphibious vehicle designed to carry one person that can transform from a four-wheeler to a jet ski-like vehicle in 5 seconds at the press of a button. The vehicle is capable of traveling at 45 mph both on land and in the water. When on land the four wheels allow the driver to cruise on just about any terrain out there.

qs 2

The vehicle can be driven directly into the water from the land. With the press of a button, its wheels move up and out of the way, completing the transformation into a water vehicle.  Power for the vehicle comes from a BMW four-cylinder engine.

qs 3

The two biggest problems I see with the Quadski are the fact that it only holds one person and the MSRP is expected to be about $40,000 (USD)… and it still doesn’t turn into a submarine.

Thermite Firefighting Robot Puts out Flames (and Looks Awesome Doing it)

Looking like a military version of Wall-E on steroids, Howe and Howe Technologies‘ latest robot is ready to extinguish fires while keeping human firefighters at a safe distance.

thermite firefighting robot 1

The appropriately named Thermite robot can pump out up to 600 gallons-per-minute of water or other firefighting agents. Its powerful dual-treaded design lets it drive into difficult terrains and over rubble and get much closer to the fire than you or I would want to.

It’s not designed to replace humans, but to keep them safe. In fact, the robot must be driven around by a remote firefighter who still needs to aim the ‘bot at the source of the flames, and use their firefighting know-how to put out the fire.

While its $96,000 price tag might seem expensive to the average joe, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to most serious firefighting equipment. Never mind the fact that the Thermite robot will be worth its weight in gold the first time it saves a life.

This Amazing Knife Can Split a Water Droplet in Half [Video]

Sometimes science truly is indistinguishable from magic: a team of engineers at Arizona State University has created a knife that can actually cut water. Cut it clean in two parts, no little droplets, no mess. Like Moses parting the Red Sea, but without killing any Egyptians. More »
