This Futuristic Truck Was Actually Designed By Walmart

With 7,000 tractor trailers currently in its fleet, it makes sense that Walmart would have a vested interest in designing more efficient delivery vehicles. The company’s new ultra-aerodynamic Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience—or WAVE—concept is lighter and more fuel efficient than other trucks on the market, and can run on almost any fuel short of nuclear power.

3D-Printed Siphon Makes Sharing Drinks Impossibly Easy

3D-Printed Siphon Makes Sharing Drinks Impossibly Easy

Anyone who’s ever emptied a pool or stolen gas from a car’s tank knows how a siphon works, but that doesn’t make this 3D printed Wave toy seem any less magical. Seeing it in action you’d assume there was some kind of sorcery involved here, as one side of the Wave draws liquid to the other until both glasses have the exact same amount of liquid. But it’s just well-known scientific principles at work.

Samsung’s concept printers don’t need Bluetooth, come with built-in sound

DNP Samsung printers

Printers aren’t the most interesting to use or look at, but we’ve got to give Samsung credit for at least trying with its latest concept mobile printers. The oval device in the pic above is called Wave, and it can access files saved on a phone directly through the dock, letting you print even without WiFi or Bluetooth. Audiophiles might want to cast their eyes upon the other machine in the pic, however, as it’s not just a printer but also a sound system that can charge phones. Samsung’s scheduled to showcase both of them along with its other, less avant-garde printing tech on September 6th at the IFA 2013. Sadly, we don’t believe the Korean company has immediate plans to bring them to market, so you’ll have to make do with the usual fare for now.

Fool-proof violin concept will teach anyone how to play the instrument

In my younger years, the violin was one of the many instruments I was made to learn. Unfortunately the lack of frets on a violin made it quite tricky and seeing the fool-proof Violin concept makes me wish that it was a reality back in the day. Designed by Jaewon Hwang, the WAVE electric violin concept has been designed in such a way that it will make learning the violin a piece of cake. It won’t turn you into a master player or a superstar composer, but it should give you the hang of the basics.

Basically this concept violin comes with tactile and braille-like indicators built into the violin which will tell players where their fingers ought to be placed. It even comes with an accelerometer to ensure that players are seated/standing in proper form (violinists will know what I’m talking about). In fact, it has been designed so that when it detects the player is not in the proper form, the electric violin will turn off and force players to readjust their stance. Pretty cool, huh?

Nanoscale Microwave Transmitters Will Transform Your Phone [Science]

To pump out all the radio-frequency signals that let you make phone calls and consume the internet wirelessly, your phone uses small chunks of silicon to create microwaves. Science had pushed the little things as far as they could—but now a nanoscale version promises to make your phone smaller, cheaper and better-performing. More »
